7 NBDHE Introduction & Expectations A. General Purpose & Significance: Statement from Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE): The JCNDE administers several standardized tests to evaluate the preparedness of individuals for the study and practice of dentistry and dental hygiene. hey include the National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Part I and Part II, the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE), and the Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE), which is currently in development. The purpose of the National Board Examinations is to assist state boards in determining qualifications of dentists and dental hygienists who seek licensure to practice dentistry or dental hygiene. These examinations assess candidates' ability to understand important information from basic biomedical and dental sciences and also the ability to apply such information in a problem-solving context. Specific dental and dental hygiene licensure requirements vary among jurisdictions, but all jurisdictions have three basic requirements: an educational requirement, a written examination requirement, and a clinical examination requirement. You must complete all three for basic licensure requirements. The NBDHE has three topic areas: Basic Sciences, Clinical Dental Hygiene, and Community Health and Research Principles. Test items are intermixed throughout the examination. Optional Tutorial NBDHE Format First Session: Discipline-based items; 200 questions Optional scheduled break Second Session: Patient Case items; 150 questions Optional Post-examination Survey Total Time Allocated Maximum Time Interval 15 minutes 3.5 hours 1 hour 4 hours 15 minutes 9 hours Notice for Retesting: You must wait 90 days between examination attempts. Candidates who have failed the NBDHE three times must wait 12 months before retesting. Please refer to the NBDHE Guide for specific details. Candidates who have received a passing score may not retest unless they provide evidence that they must retest for purposes of licensure. Candidates are limited to successful completion of an examination within five years of testing or five examination attempts, whichever comes first; this does not include testing attempts prior to January 1, DDHS 4010: National Board Review (Prepared October 2016) Page 7 of 10
