1 ND ref. FOI/16/308 Freedom of Information Thank you for your 17/10/16 request for the following information: I am core trainee with a keen research interest in the provision of under various anaesthetic modalities. The anaesthetic choice can have a considerable impact on patients treatment experience and huge implications on the use of the NHS resources. However, currently no centrally collected data is available on the anaesthetic modality for procedures. In light of this, I am undertaking a project to investigate the number of episodes of procedure under different anaesthetic modalities. I would be grateful for your response to my Freedom of Information request. For each institution within your trust that offers provision of treatment under general anaesthesia (eg. oral and maxillofacial departments, hospitals, community services), please provide the number of episodes of performed under general anaesthesia (GA), sedation, and local anaesthesia (LA) for adults (18 or older) and children (under 18 ) between 1st October 2015 and 30th September 2016 in the following format: Institution name & Trust name (One table for each institution) Trust name: Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust Institution (hospital/ service centre Maxillofacial Operations name): Adults (18 or older) Children (Under 18 ) Dental Procedure (Examples of codes below) Number of Number of Number episodes of episodes of episodes under under GA under LA sedation F09.1 Surgical removal of impacted wisdom tooth F09.2 Surgical removal of impacted tooth NEC F09.3 Surgical removal of wisdom tooth NEC F09.4 Surgical removal of tooth NEC F09.5 Surgical removal of retained root of tooth F09.8 other specified surgical removal of tooth F09.9 Unspecified surgical removal of tooth F10.1 Full clearance F10.2 Upper clearance F10.3 lower clearance F10.4 of multiple teeth NEC F10.8 other specified simple of tooth F10.9 unspecified simple of tooth Total number of EPISODES (If an episode was given more than one code, count this as one episode) F09.1 Surgical removal of impacted wisdom tooth F09.2 Surgical removal of impacted tooth NEC F09.3 Surgical removal of wisdom tooth NEC F09.4 Surgical removal of tooth NEC F09.5 Surgical removal of retained root of tooth F09.8 other specified surgical removal of tooth F09.9 Unspecified surgical removal of tooth F10.1 Full clearance of of Page 1 of 5

In accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 we are unable to provide figures where the number of patients is less than or equal to five and could risk the identification of those patients. In these cases 5 is used to indicate that a figure between 1 and 5 is being suppressed. Also note that if only one cell required suppression, at least one other number has been suppressed to avoid calculation of suppressed values from the totals. This follows HSCIC analysis guidance (2014) which states that small numbers within local authorities, wards, postcode districts, CCG s providers and Trusts may allow identification of patients and should not be published. Unfortunately we are unable to pull reports that fit into your criteria for the Salaried Dental Service, this is mainly due to the fact that the Salaried Dental Service is not part of Secondary Care treatment provider and do not use the same treatment codes. However we do provide some treatment for children and special care patients under GA as well as a Secondary Care OS service. I have attached a brief overview of our service report that you may find useful. Salaried Dental Service The Salaried Dental Service is a Primary Care Service and provides both an urgent care (for patients who are in pain and not registered with a local dentist) and a special care service (for patients who are unable to obtain treatment because of their special need or disability). All patients seen within these specialities are treated under the NHS. All activity/treatment types are coded by the NHS and claims/reports submitted to the NHS/BSA. This service meets the same treatment criteria as General Dental Professional (GDP). We also provide some Secondary Care OS and GA treatments. Page 2 of 5
