2 FOI REF: 18/079 6 th March 2018 FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT I am responding to your request for information under the Freedom of Information Act. The answers to your specific questions are as follows: 1. In your trust, in the past 3 months [latest 3 months available], how many asthma patients aged 18 and over have been treated? 87 asthma patients, aged 18 and over, have been admitted to East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust s hospitals in the past 3 months. Please note that the Trust s diagnostic codes do not drill down to outpatient level therefore we can only provide inpatient information. To obtain the outpatient information requested would require a manual review of patient records. Section 12(1) of the Act allows a public authority to refuse to comply with a request for information if the authority estimates that the cost of compliance would exceed the appropriate limit, as defined by the Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004 (the Regulations). These state that this cost limit is 450 for public authorities which are not part of central government or the armed forces. The costs are calculated at 25 per hour per person regardless of the rate of pay, which means that the limit will be exceeded if the work involved would exceed 18 hours. The Trust estimates that the cost of complying with this request would significantly exceed the above limit. 2. How many paediatric asthma treated patients [aged 6-17] have been treated? 54 asthma patients, aged 6-17, have been admitted to East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust s hospitals in the past 3 months. Please note that the Trust s diagnostic codes do not drill down to outpatient level therefore we can only provide inpatient information. To obtain the outpatient
3 information requested would require a manual review of patient records. Please see Question 1 in respect of the Section 12(1) exemption applied. 3. How many severe asthmatic patients [BTS guidelines, step 4 or 5] have been treated? Please note that the Trust s diagnostic codes do not drill down to outpatient level therefore we do not centrally hold the information requested above. To obtain the outpatient information requested would require a manual review of patient records. Please see Question 1 in respect of the Section 12(1) exemption applied. 4. How many severe allergic asthma patients [severe persistent confirmed allergic IgE-mediated asthma OR severe persistent confirmed allergic eosinophilic asthma] have been treated with: - Omalizumab [Xolair] 4 - Mepolizumab [Nucala] 0 - Reslizumab [Cinqaero] 0 - Benralizumab [Fasenra] 0 - Other [Please state] 0 Please note that the Trust does not accept any new patients in respect of the above. These patients are referred to a tertiary asthma clinic for treatment. The figures above relate to pre-approved legacy patients that still receive treatment at the Trust. 5. How many paediatric severe asthma patients treated with Xolair/omalizumab? None. 6. How many asthma clinics are run per month? Specific Asthma Clinics are run for paediatric patients only. During the last three months there were four paediatric asthma clinics run by the Trust. The Trust does not run specialised asthma clinics for adult patients. The Trust s eleven respiratory consultants see adult asthma patients in the general consultant led respiratory outpatient department clinics. 7. What is the average number of severe asthma patients per clinic? During the last three months there were four paediatric asthma clinics with a total of 29 attenders. This is an average of 7.25 patients per clinic. Please note that the Trust does not run specialised asthma clinics for adult patients and therefore we do not hold this information for adults. 8. Do you treat non asthma patients with Omalizumab [Xolair]? If yes, how many of for what condition? Two patients have been treated with Omalizumab for Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria. This treatment is used infrequently and only with prior approval from the Clinical Commissioning Group. If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
