Helen s particular interest is adhesive dentistry and she has benefited from working on a restorative PDS scheme. Outside of work she enjoys family life, music, reading and going to the gym. Heidi Cheung: Heidi qualified in 2005 and also completed her Vocational Training at the practice. She is committed to post-graduate education and has undertaken the MJDF diploma. She has also completed her Post-graduate Certificate in Dental Education. Outside dentistry, she enjoys playing badminton and squash. Both Trainers are enthusiastic about providing high standards of dentistry, committed to postgraduate education and want to share their knowledge and experience with the FD. DIpesh Thakrar: I graduated from Liverpool Dental School in 2008 and completed my vocational training at this practice. After this I undertook six months as a Senior House Officer in the Oral and Maxillofacial Department at Luton & Dunstable, Bedford and Milton Keynes hospitals. I then returned to Sandy to continue as an associate dental pratitioner. I have also under taken a Endodontic Certificate at the Eastman Dental Hospital and I have a keen interest in Oral Surgery. I have also gone on three visits to Tanzania to work for Bridge2Aid, a charity that train medical officers in removing teeth for patients in the rural areas. I found my year of training very rewarding and my subsequent training experiences have been fruitful. I look forward to supporting and nurturing newly qualified dentists to help then achieve those first steps in their career. The Practice: Sandy is easily accessible from the A1 and the railway station that connects to Peterborough and Kings Cross, is within 10 minutes walk. The practice is situated on the Market Square in the heart of the town.

6 The practice building was originally a school and then, more recently, a bank. The principal, Uday Patel took over the premises and established the dental practice in With a strong focus on patient care, the practice holds the Silver BDA Good Practice Award, and won Dental Protection s Dental Practice of the Year award. The friendly and welcoming team comprises of seven dentists, eight nurses, a receptionist, and two practice managers. The team are experienced in working with FDs and will help you make the transition into practice. The five modern, well-equipped surgeries are air-conditioned, fully computerised using the Exact software system, and have individual intra-oral digital x-ray units. There is a separate central decontamination room. We offer a comprehensive range of NHS and Private treatments for all age groups of patients. The FD1 working hours are 8am-5pm Monday to Thursday with one full day off each month. The practice is particularly suited to someone who is motivated and enthusiastic about providing dental treatment to a high standard within the general practice setting. We are looking for an FD who wants to learn and develop but who will also enjoy being part of the team and the foundation training year. The Area: Home of the RSPB headquarters, Sandy is a countryside town, but its proximity to the A1 makes commuting convenient and places the town within easy reach of Cambridge, Peterborough and Bedford. He is committed to General Practice with special interests in Orthodontics, Aesthetics and Implants. Outside of Dentistry, his interests are football and photography. Jayen Patel qualified from the University of Bristol in He completed his foundation training at Birchwood Dental Practice, Hatfield. Having worked at the Training practice for over 5 years he has considerable experience of general practice to pass on to the FD and can empathise with their learning needs. He is committed to lifelong learning having completed examinations to become a Member of the Joint Dental Faculties at the Royal College of Surgeons, England and has recently passed the course for PgCert in Dental Education at the University of Bedfordshire. Jayen has interests in Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry. His personal philosophy is always to provide excellent quality ethical dentistry and a pleasant dental experience for all of his patients. Outside of Dentistry he enjoys travelling and playing sports including football. The Practice: A busy long established family oriented dental practice with a strong emphasis on continuing care. We are very keen in developing newly qualified graduates into people who can survive in general practice and enjoy it at the same time. We wish to share all our knowledge and experience with the new FD and in return gain a new friend and colleague. We have been shortlisted in the previous years for the Best Support Team in the UK Dental Awards. We have immense experience in sedation, implantology, crown and bridgework, cosmetic dentistry and endodontics. Other colleagues interests are periodontology, hypnosis, prosthetics and paediatric dentistry and would encourage the FD to learn by assisting us in all our cases. 13 You will be able to assist regularly in advanced surgical cases including sinus grafts and block grafting. Orthodontics is another area which we wish to develop the VDP and you will be able to gain experience in Invisalign, Six Months Smile and Inman aligners. We practice intra-venous sedation with trained sedation nurses and you would be taught this too. We also wish to encourage a business acumen in the FD. In the later part of the year we set a small project to create a business plan for a new business and teach the business skills needed to own and run a practice and other related business outside dentistry. We have a year filled with structured tutorials that we have planned. The tutorials are conducted in various formats including one to one teaching, hands on practicals, didactic and problem based learning. Some of the topics include:-rotary Endo, Complications with extractions, Carbon fibre bridges, Precision Attachments, Cosmetic Smile design, Periodontal surgery, Communication techniques, Facial rejuvenation, Crown lengthening, Bleaching techniques, Buying a practice, Work-life balance, Dentolegal cases, Photography, Occlusal rehabilitation, Private dentistry, Radiology, Time management, What makes a good practice owner and Stabilization splints. Socially. We regularly go for meals together. But our forte is running practice theme events. These are some of the events the practice has undertaken. Salsa Dancing, Snowbaording, Surfing on a Wave machine, Line dancing, Bollywood dancing,70- disco, Old School Disco, Rock and Roll night and a Karaoke night. We are planning rock climbing for our next event. What our Trainees say about our practice I currently work as an FD in Bedford and Watford. I work Mondays and Wednesdays in Bedford, and Tuesdays and Thursdays in Watford. This post has given me a valuable insight into how to integrate into two different teams effectively and to build good working relations with different sets of staff. During my DFT year I have had the opportunity to improve my skills in basic dentistry such as endodontics, crown preparation and direct restorations. I have also had the opportunity to use rotary endodontics, performed internal and external bleaching as well as conducting several surgical extractions. The advantage of this role is that by working in Bedford I was able to assist on implant placements every fortnight, with tutorials given on topics relevant to implants. Furthermore, I have had tutorials every week covering all aspect of dentistry where we look at articles and use the experience of our trainer to supplement learning objectives. I have thoroughly enjoyed my DFT experience at Chrysalis Dental Practice and would recommend this post to any potential applicant. This post stands out due to the experience that can be gained by observing advanced dental procedures but also the pleasant practice environment that is present in both Watford and Bedford. - Raj Patade I currently work in the Watford practice at Chrysalis. Initially, I was apprehensive about leaving university to start work in practice, but the staff members here have made that transition extremely easy. The practice is extremely busy, which I have found advantageous as I have gained an immense amount of experience, in a wide variety subject areas. As a result my diagnosis, treatment planning and manual dexterity skills have been heightened. 20 The Area: Leighton Buzzard is a vibrant market town with great links to London and nearby Milton Keynes. The practice is situated directly in the town centre where there are plenty of chain stores and recognizable retail outlets. The area also boasts many pubs and restaurants as well as quaint cafes. Hosted within the town are several community markets that take place regularly throughout the week for both locals and visitors. The trainers both commute from North London and find the journey time to be approximately 45 minutes.

The practice is a newly refurbished 8 surgery premises with ample parking. 23 The Area: Leighton Buzzard is a vibrant market town with great links to London and nearby Milton Keynes. The practice is situated directly in the town centre where there are plenty of chain stores and recognizable retail outlets. The area also boasts many pubs and restaurants as well as quaint cafes. Hosted within the town are several community markets that take place regularly throughout the week for both locals and visitors. The trainers both commute from North London and find the journey time to be approximately 45 minutes.

Samir undertook a year long restorative and cosmetic dentistry course and has gained postgraduate qualification PgCert in Dental Education in His interests are in cosmetic dentistry, endodontics and cosmetic orthodontics for adult patients. Samir has been a Trainer for the last nine years on the Bedford scheme with a true passion for Dental Foundation Training and will provide support and clinical guidance to FDs in their Foundation Training year. Rohan Devalia: gained his qualification from Cardiff University in 2006 and is a former trainee at Poynters Road Dental Practice. Following Vocational training Rohan spent one year as a Max-Fax senior house officer as well as working in community during which time he completed his MFDS examination. Rohans interest lie in cosmetic dentistry, short term orthodontics and dental implants. Rohan has recently completed an 18 month hands on course in dental implantology. Away from dentistry he loves sport and enjoys playing squash,tennis and snooker. He also enjoys spending time with family and friends. The Practice: The practice is modern and located in a residential area treating a family oriented clientele, mainly NHS. Two past FDs are current associates. Three surgeries, Digital X-rays, Computerised, Air- conditioning, Hygienist The practice has a stable team of experienced nurses and receptionists. There are also 3 other associates working at the practice. Two of the associates are past VDP s of the practice who have stayed on or returned to the practice as associates. Other Points of Interest: What Our Trainees say about our practice: My time as a VT at Poynters Road Dental Practice allowed me to make a smooth transition from an undergraduate to associate. The staff, who regularly work with the VT, were very experienced and were familiar with the trials and tribulations for a newly qualified dentist. I was able to hone my skills on a number of procedures due to the wide patient base that attended during my time. With ample clinical freedom, general dentistry became second nature and towards the end of the year I was able to experience formulating larger treatment plans. Samir provided me with all the support I needed for this and much more, and it was a pleasure to complete my training at this practice.
