Course Description This lecture and laboratory course presents the topics of diagnosis and treatment of carious lesions and other hard tissue defects, dental plaque formation, detection, and control, fundamental methods for the prevention of dental caries, using fluorides, varnishes and other remineralizing agents, Caries Risk Assessment principles of direct restorative dentistry, and fundamental concepts in the practice of current restorative dentistry. Dental Amalgam, Resin Composites and Glass Ionomers will be introduced and highlighted. Dental Biomaterials content will be presented as different types of restorations are learned. The didactic part of the course is designed to provide the first year dental student the cognitive knowledge of the principles, terminology, instruments, materials and techniques utilized in the practice of direct restorative dentistry. A major laboratory component of this course is designed to develop the psychomotor skills required to perform basic direct restorative dentistry procedures to a clinically acceptable level when working in patient positions with manikins. Course Purpose This course is presented to introduce students to the science and psychomotor aspects of the use of direct restorative materials in contemporary dentistry. Emphasis is aimed to develop psychomotor skills as soon as possible in the dental curriculum so that during the future years in schools these skills will continue to improve. Tooth preparations for different direct restorative materials will be emphasized along with the theory of the material science related to the use of these materials. Numerous formative projects will be required before psychomotor competency testing in order to allow students practice time and faculty evaluation. 8. Course Goals Didactic: This course is designed to provide students with didactic information concerning: a. Caries risk assessment, remineralization techniques, minimally invasive dentistry, the caries process, caries removal. b. The principles, terminology, instruments, materials and techniques used in the practice of Operative Dentistry. c. Amalgam, resin composite and glass ionomer materials d. The basic principles of preparation design for amalgam, resin composites and glass ionomer restorations. e. Amalgam, resin composite and glass ionomer restorative procedures f. Operator and patient positions for Operative procedures in all four quadrants of the mouth. Simulation : a. Instrumentation: Provide students with knowledge and experience in the selection and proper usage of hand and rotary instruments and maintenance and sharpening of instruments. b. Tooth preparation and restoration: Provide students with experience in preparing traditional preparations (Classes I through V) in manikin teeth and restoring them with dental amalgam and resin composites. c. Simulated patient treatment: Provide students with simulated patient experiences restoring manikin teeth in the simulation clinic. d. Experiences in extracted natural teeth: Provide students with experiences on extracted natural teeth, including: caries removal, enamel and dentin bonding procedures, and resin and glass ionomer placement. 9. Learning Objectives a. Understand and know the basic methods of caries diagnosis and detection b. Optimally position him/herself and patients for efficient operation c. Explain fundamentals of infection control and carry out infection control procedures d. Given a patient s diagnostic information, use critical thinking skills to determine the cause and effect for their clinical findings e. Demonstrate rudimentary skills in instrument handling f. Complete a dental and medical history g. Understand the fundamental concepts of doctor-patient interactions h. Describe normal intra-oral radiographic anatomy i. Describe fundamental concepts of dental plaque formation, detection, and control j. Describe fundamental concepts of dental caries k. Inspect and describe the dentition l. Describe and understand fundamental methods for the prevention of dental caries, using fluorides, varnishes and other remineralizing agents n. Understand the selection of appropriate restorative materials including remineralization therapies r. Understand and know instrumentation for direct restorative procedures s. Understand and apply principles of occlusion in direct restorative procedures v. Understand and know indications for bases, liners, sealers, and temporary restorations in the treatment of carious lesions w. Understand and know the principles of Class I, II, II, IV, V, and VI direct restorations and sealants y. Understand and know dental biomaterials information as it applies to the restorations taught in this course z. Prepare and restore restorations using amalgam, glass ionomer and composite resin. 10. Associated Competencies Learning Objective SDM Competency from Appendix 1 See section No. 9 1, 5, 7. 9, 10, 11, 13., 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 24, 27, 29, 33, Student Evaluations Methods The didactic portion of the course constitutes 35% of the final grade. The second examination will be comprehensive with a heavy emphasis on material presented following the first examination. Test questions will be based on the specific learning objectives for the assigned readings and lecture materials presented. Written exams may consist of multiple choice, True/False, fill-in, short answer, and/or identification type questions. No questions will be answered during written examinations. The student is responsible for all material from lectures, reading assignments, and laboratory application irregardless of excused or unexcused absences. Students have 2 weeks by appointment to review any written exam. Unannounced quizzes may be given during lectures and will be based the reading material listed in the syllabus. A student entering class after the quiz has started will not be allowed to take the quiz. The laboratory portion of the course accounts for 65% of the final grade. The students will be evaluated by 5 practical exams, and by project(s) including restorations completed during the semester. All exams will be carried out in tooth models mounted in dentoforms in simulated patient position. All class projects will be performed under rubber dam isolation unless otherwise indicated. Selected projects will be used to evaluate rubber dam placement. The student will have the opportunity to review practical examinations, but no grades will be changed. Office hours are offered by appointment to address issues related to the course in structure and/or content, or to clarify class material. No class projects will be signed off outside of the scheduled laboratory sessions. 4 RDN810 Direct Restorations Seminar / Sabatini Spring Year 1 & Extension Depending on your standing in other courses this semester, a failing grade in RDN 810 will require satisfactory performance on a make-up examination. Only one make-up is permitted, and will be arranged on an individual basis. A failing grade on the make-up examination will require the student to repeat the course. Didactic exams, practical exams, quizzes, and other projects will be identified by dentoform number only. These must be correctly identified before handing them in. The percentage assigned to the randomly selected project(s) may be up to 10% of the corresponding laboratory grade. Point deductions off of final course grade pertaining to unexcused absences will be at the discretion of the course director (refer to the attendance policy section of the syllabus). Course Policies & Procedures Policies and procedures of the course are written in accordance with the Faculty Handbook and Academic Policies. Course Policies are written to clarify expectations of the course director regarding attendance, behavior, grading, academic integrity, professionalism, disabilities, remediation, etc. Refer to the student handbook for more detailed information A. Course Failure and Remediation Remediation is permitted only following recommendation by the Student Progress and Promotions committee and the approval of the Executive Council. If this recommendation is subsequentially approved, the student may complete a remedial program developed and administered by the course director. Satisfactory completion of the remedial program will result in an F/P recorded on the student transcript. B. Attendance There will be no formal monitoring of attendance, however, please consider the following statement from the SDM Student Handbook: Attendance at scheduled classes, laboratory sessions, clinical assignments (including rotations), and examinations is mandatory. Absence from any of these activities can negatively affect knowledge, skills and grades. The student is responsible for notifying the course director in writing with as much advance notice as possible of required and justifiable absences on days of scheduled examinations, preferably at the beginning of the course. No make up examination will be allowed in cases of non-justifiable absences. It will be at the discretion of the course director to judge on an individual basis exceptional circumstances. A make up exam, if allowed by the course director, will likely be based upon new test material, and not the original test material. D. Canceled Classes If, for any reason, a scheduled session is not held, the scheduled event will occur at the next session unless otherwise announced. E. Course Evaluation Comprehensive evaluation of this course will be administered online at the end of the course through the Office of Academic Affairs. All electronic devices except those specifically required by the course director or lecturer are not permitted in class.
