1 PROSTHODONTICS 523P REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURE DESIGN SYLLABUS Winter Quarter 2009 Mondays, January 5 March 13 7:30-9:20 AM Course Director: Dr. Hai Zhang Office: D770C, Tel: (206) , haizhang@u.washington.edu I. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is to present the principles of removable partial denture design for various partially edentulous situations. The course is comprised of a series of lectures and laboratory excises. No clinic sessions are included. II. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES The objective of this course is for students to be able to design an RPD for a patient, which will be acceptable from a physiological and mechanical viewpoint. An overall objective of this course is to ensure that students possess the knowledge, skills and values to begin the practice of general dentistry. At the completion of this course, the following competencies of the school (and the CODA) will be partially met: 1. UWSOD Competency #2: Communicate the risks and benefits of proposed care and alternative treatment strategies available, and then obtain expressed consent for treatment conveyed by a patient or legal guardian. (CODA 2-25.d) 2. UWSOD Competency #3: Formulate a comprehensive treatment plan based on diagnostic findings, then implement treatment in a safe, properly sequenced and timely manner. (CODA 2-23, 3-25.b) 3. UWSOD Competency #17: Manage replacement of teeth of the partially or completely edentulous patients. (CODA 2-25.g) 4. UWSOD Competency #18: Practice dentistry within the ethical standards of the dental profession and the law. (CODA 2-20, 2-21) 5. UWSOD Competency #21: Recognize the role of lifelong learning and self-assessment in maintaining competency. (CODA 2-22) 6. UWSOD Competency #22: Utilize critical thinking in assessing technical and scientific information for use in identifying patient needs and treatments. (CODA 2-15, 2-23) 7. UWSOD Competency #25: Manage a diverse patient population and have the interpersonal and communication skills to function successfully in a multicultural work environment. (CODA 2-17)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS The reading assignments in your RPD Course Manual, and other assignments that need to be completed before attending the lectures/seminars are listed on pages 3-6. The photoplates following Chapter 9 show examples used for clinic patients, and will be useful when you begin designing casts for the seminars and for patients who will be assigned to you during your third and fourth years. Student reviews will be used to re-evaluate and restructure the course for future classes as part of an ongoing mechanism of the evaluation of the curriculum. Attendance policy: If you are unable to attend a required class session, you must document the reason and submit it to the Course Director. It will be up to the Course Director to decide if the excuse is valid. For those with valid excuses, an opportunity will be given to take a make-up exam. If the excuse is deemed invalid, a score of 0 will be given for the missed examination. Questions you may have about how an examination or cast design was evaluated must be resolved within two weeks of its return to you to be effective in any grade change. VI. COURSE GRADING Grades are based on the percentage of points obtained.
