13 DCT1, DCT2/3 Job description for each unit University Hospitals Birmingham Hospital/Clinic Postcode Job Description Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Sandwell Community B15 2TH There are 8 DCT2/3 posts offered at University Hospitals Birmingham. Alongside this post there are also 4 DCT1 rotational posts and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Sandwell SDS. University Hospital Birmingham is the major teaching hospital in the Birmingham area providing spoke services to City Hospital and Solihull Hospitals. The unit provides a comprehensive Oral and Maxillofacial surgery service to the population of Birmingham. DCT s have robust support during their time at UHB at both registrar and consultant level. DCT s from UHB are encouraged to present both nationally and internationally, many going on to specialist training including medical school. The service includes: Dent alveolar surgery Facial trauma Facial deformity Vascular malformations Adult cleft & craniofacial surgery TMJ surgery Head and Neck oncology Skin cancer Basic oral medicine Implantology DCTs will gain experience in all of these areas, along with out of hours on-call experience Sandwell Community Service For the DCT1 posts the rotation in the community is based primarily in Sandwell, with sessions in Birmingham clinics including Birmingham Dental hospital. Examples of clinical experience include oral surgery assessments and treatments, treatment under sedation and GA; management of anxious adults with IV sedation; Consultant clinics for paediatric dentistry and sessions in primary care at BDH. 13

At Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital, Telford we run a friendly, busy Oral and Maxillofacial Service. The Department is made up of 5 Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, 3 Consultant Orthodontists, 1 Consultant Restorative Dental Surgeon, 2 Staff Grade Doctors and 1 Specialist Registrar. In-patient services and on call are based at Princess Royal Hospital, Telford. On call duties cover oral and maxillofacial work only and do not include night-time cover. There is fulltime Registrar Middle-Grade cover. We can offer exposure to a large amount of dento-alveolar, orthognathic, head and neck cancer (including free flap surgery), implant, skin malignancy and trauma surgery. There will be ample opportunity to become involved in clinical audit and DCT's are expected to attend a monthly departmental meeting encompassing teaching and service development discussions In Paediatric Dentistry DCTs attend consultant led new patient clinics and MDT clinics. They will undertake a wide range of treatments for children and will experience the management of complex medical histories and behaviour management in children. DCTs in Oral Medicine participate fully in the work of the department. They attend consultant-led clinics, seeing new and review patients, carry out investigations including mucosal biopsies and blood tests and have an important part to play in checking the results of investigations and taking action on any abnormalities identified. They also participate in departmental meetings, audit projects and prepare presentations for journal club meetings. DCTs are encouraged to attend regional and national oral medicine meetings and to present cases and posters. All DCTs also gain experience in managing patients with complex 17

In addition they attend seminars, hands on practical courses and are encouraged to attend and present at regional and national Specialist Society meetings. The Dudley Group of Hospitals Hospital/Clinic Postcode Job Description Russell s Hall Hospital DY1 2HQ This post is one of two DCT1 posts at the Dudley Group of Hospitals. There are also 2 DCT2/3 posts. The post is available at the Dudley Group of Hospitals in Dudley, with on call commitments at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals. The post offers a wide experience in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, including facial deformities, salivary gland surgery, trauma, dental infections, oral medicine and TMJ. DCTs have a great opportunity to develop skills in dento-alveolar surgery as MOS sessions are performed by them under supervision. Experience in head and neck will be gained at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton where all mayor reconstructive cases are done. The unit also has a strong link with orthodontic with exposure to facial deformity planning and surgical procedures. There is a Maxillofacial laboratory on site. The successful candidate would currently be expected to undertake a 1:8 full shift work pattern with prospective cover. The post is recognised by the Postgraduate Dental Dean for education and staffing approval and therefore, for the MFDS and MRCS examinations, with teaching and study leaves allowances included in the appointment. 18
19 Birmingham Children s Hospital Hospital Postcode Job Description Birmingham Children s Hospital B4 6NH There are 2 DCT2/3 posts offered in Paediatric Dentistry and Paediatric OMFS based at Birmingham Children s Hospital. The Children s Hospital is a large multidisciplinary hospital with approximately 300 beds and 9 operating theatres. The Trust provides secondary level Paediatric services for the child and adolescent population of much of the city of Birmingham, both in the hospital and through its community and clinical support services. It is also the regional referral center for the West Midlands region (population 5.2m) and many of its specialist services extend their referral base beyond the regional boundaries. The West Midlands Regional Cleft Lip & Palate Team is based at the Children s Hospital. In addition to general Paediatric medicine and general Paediatric surgery, the clinical services provided by the Trust include: Accident and Emergency Medicine; Anesthetics and Intensive Care; Bone Marrow Transplantation; Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery; Child and Adolescent Mental Health; Clinical Psychology; Dermatology; Endocrinology and Diabetes; ENT Surgery, Audiology and Cochlear Implantation; Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition; Hemophilia; Hepatology; Inherited Metabolic Disease; Neonatal Surgery; Nephrology including Hemodialysis and Renal Transplantation; Neurology; Neurophysiology; Neurosurgery; Non Malignant Hematology; Oncology; Ophthalmology; Orthopedic and Trauma Surgery; Plastic Surgery, Rehabilitation; Respiratory Medicine and Cystic Fibrosis; Rheumatology; Thoracic Surgery; Urology. The Department The department has 4 fully equipped dental surgeries, 2 with dedicated inhalation sedation facilities. The Paediatric Dentistry team comprises of 3 Consultants, Mrs. V. Clark (Clinical Lead/Head of Service Coordinator of Paediatric Dental Services for children with Cleft Lip and Palate) Mrs. S McKaig and Mrs. A James, (Consultants in Paediatric Dentistry), 3 FTTA s and 1 SpR. There is a Consultant led Orthodontic service that is based with the Regional Cleft Team. The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery team comprises of 3 Consultants, Mr. A Monaghan, Mr. R Williams and Mr. Ian Sharp with SpR / FTTA support provided from University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. Clinical Attachments The DCT will have the opportunity to attend New Patient Clinics in both Paediatric dentistry and oral & maxillofacial surgery and will have dedicated treatment sessions. Experience will be gained working closely with medical and surgical colleagues on the Wards and in the 19
20 Accident and Emergency Department. The department is also part of the West Midlands Cleft lip and Palate team and the Craniofacial team. There are also strong links with the Hematology Oncology and Gastroenterology Departments. The DCT will attend theatre sessions and be encouraged to develop their technical skills in both Paediatric dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery. The DCT will be encouraged to take part in Clinical Audit and there are opportunities for research. The post includes out of hours on call duties. The post is non-resident. The on-call rota will be fixed. The DCT on call commitments will be one night a week on call (1 in 7) for 6 weeks with the 7th week being a rest week from on call commitments. 20
21 Study leave allowance and HEE WM Regional Study Programme 30 days in total are available to DCT Trainees. Health Education England working across the West Midlands Postgraduate Dental Team will have arranged study days and clinical skills courses throughout the year these are automatically deducted from this leaving the remaining days for self-directed study available. These should be applied for via individual hospitals using the appropriate application form, and with adequate notice for clinical rotas. An allowance of approximately 600 per trainee is available but because Health Education West Midlands Postgraduate Dental Team budget revolves around an March year end, this may have to be proportioned to two thirds of this before April and one third after. Trainees will be informed what remuneration is available for individual applications. Overleaf you will find the Health Education England working across the West Midlands Regional Study Programme. In order to book a place onto these study days you will first need to register on the booking system maxcourse. Attached with your induction will be a user guide showing how you can register and also how to navigate through the system. Once you have registered/signed in, you will need to add your profession as Dental Core Training. The Dentist on the Ward course will be held on 2 separate days and attendance at both days will be mandatory. Due to restricted places Mr Sharp will automatically pre-allocate which DCTs will be registered to attend the Dentist on the Ward course dependant on your experience and the post you will be doing. It will be held at Skills Suite, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Sarah Brothwood will contact the DCTs who have been allocated to attend this training in due course if you are allocated to attend. All DCTS will be given a copy of the "Dentist on the Ward" manual when you start in post. These will be distributed to all attendees on the induction day and remaining copies will be sent to individual units. All DCTs will be required to attend an induction day by Mr Ian Sharp this will be held Monday 12 th September at the NEW Birmingham Dental Hospital and you are required to book yourselves on to attend this induction on maxcourse (details above) University Hospitals Birmingham will also be running a Trauma Skills 3 day course full details to be confirmed. This course will have limited places available and will work on a first come first serve basis. It is essential that you sign in and out on all the study days, failure to sign both registers may result in your attendance not being confirmed on the system and therefore you will not be issued with a certificate. DCTs are responsible for their own bookings if you know you will be unable to attend a study day that you had previously booked onto it is your responsibility to cancel that booking. 21

23 Online Induction Doctors in Training Online Generic Induction (DITOGI) All DCTs are required to complete the Online Induction Course DITOGI prior to your start date. You have all been registered onto DITOGI 2016 and been sent a user guide explaining how to log in and complete the designated modules. Any problems logging in please contact me directly. DCTs only need to complete 13 of the 18 modules, as these are the only modules relevant to dental trainees. PLEASE NOTE if you have completed DITOGI in the West Midlands within the last 2 years you will not need to re-do it. Please informing me of the date you completed previous. E-Portfolio The e portfolio developed and maintained by NES should be used. This records experience and reflections in addition to the work based assessments completed monthly. It is the responsibility of the individual trainee to keep their portfolio up to date. HEE WM will set all DCTs up on NES prior to their start date and will send out log in details and access to the site. For full details on what is expected in your e-portfolio please refer to the DCT National Curriculum. The portfolio acts as a record of the DCT year and if used well, is a valuable resource to help with securing future posts. Evidence recorded in the portfolio will be used to inform the Educational Supervisor s report and the end of year panel assessment. 23
