Treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancer with Mohs micrographic surgery in which malignant tissue is removed one thin layer at a time and the complete surgical margin examined for the presence of residual tumor has doubled among the Medicare population in the past decade, particularly among patients in their 60s. From 2001 to 2006, the rate of Mohs surgery rose from 0.75 per 100 patients to 1.5 per 100, according to Cary P. Gross, MD, of Yale University, and colleagues. Among patients ages 67 to 69, 40.6% of procedures in recent years were Mohs surgery, while among those 85 and older, the percentage was only 33.5% (P<0.001), the researchers reported in the April Archives of Dermatology.
