4 Symposium speakers Professor Rachel Batterham University College London Rachel Batterham established and leads the University College London Hospital Bariatric Centre for Weight Management & Metabolic Surgery and the University College London Centre for Obesity Research. Her work has played a key role in identifying gut hormones as tractable therapeutic targets for obesity. She holds a prestigious National Institute of Health Research Professorship ( ) and is recognised internationally for her research focused on body weight regulation. She has received several prestigious awards including the 2016 Andre Mayer award from the World Obesity Federation. Professor Louise Baur University of Sydney Louise Baur is Professor of Child and Adolescent Health at the University of Sydney. She is a consultant paediatrician at the Sydney Children s Hospitals Network, and Director of the National Health and Medical Research Council Centre of Research Excellence in the Early Prevention of Obesity in Childhood. Louise has made research contributions to the prevention of obesity, especially in early childhood. Her research interests include the impact of food marketing to children, the antecedents of obesity and the metabolic syndrome in young people, the complications of obesity, and the management of obesity in a variety of clinical settings. Professor Robert Beaglehole Robert Beaglehole is Professor Emeritus at The, where he was earlier Professor of Community Health. Between 2004 and 2007, Robert was Director of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Department of Chronic Disease and Health Promotion, responsible for WHO s technical work in these areas. He is now an independent public health physician working on global and national NCD issues. Professor Alex Brown University of South Australia A world-recognised leader in Indigenous health, Alex Brown investigates the chronic conditions that contribute to the 10-year life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. As head of the Wardliparingga Aboriginal Research Unit at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, Alex leads a major National Health and Medical Research Council funded research project investigating the diabetes epidemic taking place in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. He has championed improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as a moral, ethical and cultural obligation, emphasising prevention and rehabilitation. Dr Kirsten Coppell Kirsten Coppell is a specialist in public health medicine and has also trained and practised as a general practitioner in New Zealand and the UK. During her public health medicine training Kirsten became involved with diabetes quality of care improvement initiatives. She has undertaken diabetes and diabetes-related research at Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research since it was established in 2003, and has contributed to national diabetes clinical and retinal screening guidelines. Her research interests include the translation of clinical trial evidence into real world settings, particularly in relation to diabetes prevention. 3

5 Callie Corrigan Toi Tangata He uri no Te Hiku o Te Ika, Ko Tokerau te moana, Ko Maunga Taniwha te maunga, Ko Ngati Kahu te iwi. Callie Corrigan is the current Programmes Manager at Toi Tangata (toitangata.co.nz), a National Māori Health Organisation leading in Māori Public Health Nutrition and Physical Activity. A wahine with a range of experience working within communities addressing hauora issues through the vehicle of kai and movement from grassroots to national roles. Callie s passion is ensuring Māori voices and community voices are engaged in the solutions. She will share some of the insights through the He Awatea Hou Whānau Health Literacy pilot programme. Professor Wayne Cutfield Wayne Cutfield is Professor of Paediatric Endocrinology at the Liggins Institute, and an expert on insulin sensitivity and action in children. He is a former Director of Endocrinology at Auckland s Starship Children s Hospital, where he was responsible for innovations in the care of children with hormone based conditions such as diabetes and growth disorders. Wayne leads clinical research which shows how environmental influences early in life can affect childhood growth and development in ways that could lead to chronic conditions in adult life. He is Interim Director of the National Science Challenge: A Better Start. Professor Dave Grattan Dave Grattan is Professor of Anatomy and a former head of this department at the University of Otago. He is well-published in the fields of endocrinology and neuroscience and has won a number of prestigious awards, including the Mortyn Jones Medal of the British Society for Neuorendocrinology. Dave is interested in how obesity is associated with changes in the way that the brain processes metabolic information from the body. Professor Rod Jackson Rod Jackson is a professor of epidemiology at the and Co-Principal Investigator of the Healthier Lives research project looking at equitable risk prediction for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes. He is one of the architects of New Zealand risk-based clinical guidelines for managing CVD risk. Rod s main research interest is the epidemiology of CVD, and his current research focus is on using web-based decision support tools linked to regional and national electronic health databases to implement, monitor and improve CVD risk management guidelines. Associate Professor Jeremy Krebs, Wellington Jeremy Krebs is an Endocrinologist with a particular interest in obesity and diabetes. He is Clinical Leader of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Wellington Hospital, an Associate Professor with the, and previously the Director of the Clinical Research Diploma at Victoria University. As well as clinical and teaching activities, Jeremy maintains active research interests in the area of obesity and diabetes, with a focus on nutritional aspects, bariatric surgery and diabetes service delivery. 4

6 Professor David Lubans University of Newcastle David Lubans is the theme leader for school-based research in the University of Newcastle s Priority Research Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition. His research is focused on understanding the determinants of physical activity and the development and evaluation of interventions in school and community settings. David is currently leading a number of research projects designed to evaluate the impact of physical activity interventions on behaviour, fitness, movement skills and social and emotional well-being in young people. Professor Jim Mann Jim Mann is the Director of the Healthier Lives National Science Challenge and co-director of the Edgar Diabetes and Research Centre. He has been a professor in human nutrition and medicine at the and consultant physician (endocrinology) in Dunedin Hospital for 25 years. He is also Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Human Nutrition, the New Zealand-China Non-Communicable Diseases Research Collaboration Centre, and Principal Investigator for the Riddet Institute, a national Centre of Research Excellence. Dr Dianne McCarthy Dianne McCarthy is a member of the Healthier Lives Governance Group. A former Chief Executive of the Royal Society of New Zealand, she has over 20 years experience in various management and governance roles in the tertiary education, science and health sectors. Among numerous other roles she is currently Acting Chair of the Ageing Well National Science Challenge, a Director of the Cawthron Institute, and a Board member of the Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies. She was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to education and a Companion of the Royal Society of New Zealand for services to science. Dr Rachael McLean Rachael McLean is a public health physician with an interest in nutritional epidemiology and public health. She is interested in the relationship between food, nutrition and chronic disease, particularly obesity, and cardiovascular disease. Current research interests include monitoring population dietary sodium intake, public health approaches to dietary sodium reduction, and the relationship between dietary sodium and cardiovascular disease. Professor Tony Merriman Tony Merriman is a member of Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research. His research group takes a genetic approach to understanding the biology of human disease, including the identification of genetic variations that affect obesity. His main research interest is the genetic causes of gout. Professor Cliona Ni Mhurchu Cliona Ni Mhurchu is Professor of Population Nutrition at the National Institute for Health Innovation. Her research programme evaluates the impact of population diet interventions and policies, including food taxes / subsidies, front-of-pack nutrition labels, healthier food reformulation, and restrictions on marketing of unhealthy food to children. Cliona is Deputy Director of the Healthier Lives National Science Challenge. 5

7 Associate Professor Rinki Murphy Rinki Murphy is a consultant diabetes physician working in Auckland and Counties Manukau District Health Boards, at the, and as a medical advisor for Diabetes Auckland. She has been involved in guideline development for monogenic diabetes and weight management. Rinki s research spans basic molecular science, physiology, and clinical research, and she is involved with multiple national and international collaborations in observational studies and clinical trials. Associate Professor Louise Signal, Wellington Louise Signal is a social scientist with a PhD in Community Health from the University of Toronto. She has worked and conducted research in the field of health promotion for 25 years in a range of roles, including Senior Advisor (Health Promotion) for the New Zealand Ministry of Health. Louise is Director of the Health Promotion and Policy Research Unit, at the, Wellington. Her current research includes studying children s lived environment to explore their exposure to advertising, alcohol and junk food, and developing appropriate interventions for change. Professor Barry Taylor Barry Taylor is Dean of the Dunedin School of Medicine at the. As a paediatrician and clinical researcher, his research interests have spanned sleep in infants and children, sudden infant death syndrome as well as developing NZ s national mortality review system for child and youth deaths. Barry s research now focuses on prevention and management of childhood obesity with a special interest in the interaction between sleep and unhealthy weight and the role of big data in contributing to research. He is a co-director of A Better Start National Science Challenge and a past president of the Paediatric Society of NZ. Professor Rachael Taylor Rachael Taylor is Director of the Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research Centre. She leads or co-leads a number of large intervention projects testing different approaches to effective obesity prevention in children and adolescents. One of her main areas of interest is how sleep may contribute to effective weight management during growth. Dr Lisa Te Morenga Lisa Te Morenga (Ngāti Whātua, Te Rarawa) is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Human Nutrition at the. She is affiliated with the Riddet Institute, is a member of the Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research Centre, and is a Co-Principal Investigator for Healthier Lives. Her research specialties include epidemiological and dietary intervention studies, and the effects of macronutrients such as dietary sugars, dietary fibre, and dietary protein on increased risk of preventable diseases including obesity, the metabolic syndrome, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. 6

9 Meet the presenters Kim Hill Kim Hill is unquestionably one of New Zealand s finest current affairs interviewers. In 2012 she won the International Radio Personality of the Year and judges described her as: an experienced and warm broadcaster exercising full control of her content whilst coaxing her guests to reveal more of themselves; really enjoyable live and sparky content that demonstrates what is great about radio and illustrates how important lightness of touch is in speech content. She has interviewed thousands of people (the famous and the infamous) and enjoys expansive interviews she is looking forward to a highly engaging evening! Professor Jim Mann Jim is a world leader in human nutrition, diabetes and obesity. For over 20 years he has advised the World Health Organisation about the role of nutrition in diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. The author of over 300 academic articles, he has published recent research on the role of sugar on our health. Jim has worked as a consultant physician (specialising in Endocrinology) in Dunedin Hospital for the past 25 years. Jim will provide a brief summary on the health consequences of sugar, bringing in the research evidence and WHO recommendations. Professor Jacqueline Rowarth Jacqueline is Chief Scientist for the Environmental Protection Authority, a role she embraced last year, after 35 years in teaching and research, most recently at the University of Waikato. My new role is a considerable change from teaching but, as my students know, I have a focus on facts, evidence and data, analysis and synthesis. She has a degree in agricultural science with honours in environmental agriculture, a PhD in Soil Science (nutrient cycling) and research in carbon, nitrogen, food and economics. Professor Rowarth was made Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to agricultural science in Jacqueline will discuss the social and economic consequences of reducing global sugar intake on sugar producing countries. Professor Tony Blakely Tony is an epidemiologist and directs the HRC-funded Burden of Disease Epidemiology, Equity and Cost Effectiveness Programme (BODE 3 ). This programme builds infrastructure and capacity to rapidly assess the health impact and cost effectiveness of a range of preventative and cancer control interventions and examine their equity impacts. In BODE 3 is modelling a range of preventive interventions, including dietary and physical activity interventions. Tony will speak on the economic consequences of health issues in countries with a high sugar intake (such as New Zealand), including a discussion on taxation. 8
