A gift of a lifetim me
Your gift You don t enjoy the thought, but you can imagine a time when you are no longer on this earth. What you leave behind in your Will is a powerful summary of your personal and private wishes. It represents what you value in this life, and what you desire to happen beyond your lifetime. Including a gift in your Will to Diabetes Queensland can change the lives of people with diabetes, as well as help to prevent people being diagnosed in the future. Most importantly, it gives us the opportunity to recognise, appreciate and thank you for your wonderful generosity during your lifetime. All of us have an optimistic dream... that one day a cure will be found and that together we can beat diabetes.
Lucy Sperrink "You don t have to let diabetes get you down! You just have to work with it." Lucy grew up in a time when little was known about diabetes. Born in a mining village in the heart of the Sherwood Forest, United Kingdom, Lucy was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 10. Like many others, she started insulin treatment. During World War II, Lucy made clothing for the armed forces and worked in her mother s florist shop. After the war, she became a teacher, studied floral art and displayed her craft during many exhibitions. Lucy met her true love Fred on the dance floor of a social, and they were married in Fred was her rock. He was with her when they travelled the world, and he was with her while she was in and out of hospital for her diabetes. I put my success in life to the care and support of my mother and Fred, my faithful husband of 57 years, Lucy said in 2012 when she was awarded a Diabetes Queensland 70-year Kellion Victory Medal. Lucy and Fred were also presented with an Angels for Diabetes award, to honour the couple s generous bequest to Diabetes Queensland. Her wonderful commitment, by way of a gift in her Will, will help Diabetes Queensland transform the futures of many people with diabetes, and give hope to many others.
Hilda Chanter Overwhelmed by her generosity. To those who knew her best, Hilda was a generous soul. She gave her life to others, but did not expect anything in return. Born in the country town of Stanthorpe and raised in Brisbane s Wynnum, the late Private Hilda Chanter QX56612 was a Queenslander through and through. She gave to her country, serving in the Royal Australian Army Women s Medical Service during World War II from August 1943 to August 1946, volunteering in an honorary medical capacity. It was not until later in life that Hilda was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. But Hilda didn t let the condition hold her back. Hilda continued to be active and cherished her books and her gardening. Today, Hilda s accomplishments and generosity are honoured at her local RSL at Holland Park, Brisbane, where her World War II uniform and medals are on permanent display. They are accompanied by a plaque acknowledging her as an Angel for Diabetes. Hilda left a large portion of her estate to Diabetes Queensland. We were overwhelmed by her gift. Hilda s selflessness and generosity live on through her gift to Diabetes Queensland.
Richard Free They helped me to move on from fear to confidence." Lifelong Diabetes Queensland member and Townsville man Richard Free has a cheeky enthusiasm for life, and for helping others. He says it how it is and reckons he stays loyal to Diabetes Queensland because any donation is a great bang for a buck." Richard has seen some dark days - as many people do - when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in After two hefty Christmas meals I found myself dying of thirst, busting for the toilet and overwhelmed with dizziness, says Richard. A taxi to my medical centre led to blood and urine tests that shouted type 2 diabetes. Richard says after he saw busy doctors and contemplated frightening medications he was pointed to Diabetes Queensland by a friendly nurse. Diabetes Queensland encouraged me to not panic, he says. They helped me move on from fear to confidence. I immediately felt part of a group that offered support and a great service. I left them a modest amount in my Will and have contributed regularly to their appeals. Diabetes Queensland gives back a huge amount to me and other members and I ll continue to support them. For me, a gift in a Will is a gift packed with value.
Beryl Caroline Stewart We hope this gift helps in some small way. Beryl knew tragedy in her life. She lost all of her five siblings early in their lives to diabetes. But Beryl was determined to survive and live the life they didn t. Beryl s entire family was devastated by diabetes. But her gift has helped so many other families cope with diabetes through access to support and information. She was able to keep herself fit and healthy and was adored by her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. A member of Diabetes Queensland for many years, she was an avid reader of the magazine Diabetes in Queensland. Unfortunately in her last five years, her type 2 diabetes progressed and she had mobility issues and needed daily oxygen therapy. Sadly, Beryl passed away in September Her daughters, Carol and Patricia, wrote to Diabetes Queensland and shared Beryl s story and a generous gift. She decided to make a gift in her Will as she felt that Diabetes Queensland had been of assistance to her for many years, said Carol.
Merilyn Rae Carr They wanted to help people. Merilyn and her husband Robin were unable to enjoy the blessing of having their own children, but that didn t stop them giving. The folks around Deception Bay knew Merilyn well for her trademark purple scooter, her hat with all the travel badges and her beloved dog Bindi. They were surrounded by love - the love of their nieces and nephews and the love of each other. "Merilyn and Robin wanted to help people - they wanted Queenslanders to live in a world free of diabetes," said sister Geraldine. Marrying Robin in 1971, Merilyn spent a lifetime of happiness enjoying the most life could offer. In death, Merilyn and Robin gave their greatest gift, giving everything they owned to charity, including a most generous gift in their Wills to Diabetes Queensland. When Robin sadly passed, Merilyn continued her rich life as a gardener, a stamp and coin collector, a cook and a photographer. Their gift will help other people live a richer life.
Your will Most of us do not like to think about our life hereafter. That is why around half of all Australians never make a Will. Unfortunately, decisions about what they wish are unclear to those they leave behind. A Will is a living document that reflects your personal values and offers you peace of mind that your wishes will be fulfilled beyond your lifetime. Making a Will can be amazingly simple and is often quick and inexpensive too. If you are considering leaving a gift to Diabetes Queensland in your Will, we would be grateful if you could let us know. Please be assured all discussions with us will be in the strictest confidence. You will be joining a very special group of people who have chosen to commit to us in a significant way. Their gift will touch the lives of many Queenslanders living with diabetes. We hope you will consider joining these special people in making a real difference. Preparing a Will makes it so much easier for the people we leave behind.
How to change a life A gift to Diabetes Queensland in your Will changes lives the lives of people in the Diabetes Queensland community, and those who have not yet been diagnosed. The benefit of a gift in your Will is that your assets remain in your control during your lifetime. Most importantly, your gift will benefit Diabetes Queensland tomorrow, just as you intend it to, today. When including a gift in your Will, please consider a residual statement. The residual or remainder, is all or part of whatever is left over after your loved ones and your expenses have been taken care of. This kind of gift in your Will will ensure your timeless legacy and your wishes are fulfilled. There are other options your Solicitor may wish you to consider. An example of a Residual Statement: I give and bequeath the rest and residue of my Estate of whatsoever nature and wheresoever situate to my Trustees UPON TRUST to sell, call in and convert the same into money to pay thereout all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses and all other duties or taxes whatsoever payable on or by reason of my death AND TO HOLD the balance thereof UPON TRUST for Diabetes Queensland, ABN of 29 Finchley Street Milton QLD 4064 for its general purposes. I direct that the written acknowledgement of Diabetes Queensland to be accepted by my executors as a full and complete discharge.
About us Since 1968, Diabetes Queensland has worked to support Queensland s largest community of people with diabetes, their families and carers. By providing much needed information and support we are able to help thousands of people live well with diabetes. As a not-for-profit organisation we are dedicated to getting the very best in life for all people with diabetes. And yet, as more and more people develop this life-changing condition, we find ourselves trying to do more with less. Around 250,000 people in Queensland are currently diagnosed with diabetes. Each day, an extra 62 people are diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. That s an extra 19,000 people desperately needing our support every year. It s a big job and your help makes a difference. Diabetes Queensland recommends you seek advice from a Solicitor, the Public Trustee, a Trust company, The Queensland Law Society or another qualified legal professional when making or updating your Will. Diabetes Queensland is the Trading Name of the Diabetic Association of Queensland Limited ABN Diabetes Queensland complies with the Privacy Act 1988 and has a policy governing privacy and confidentiality. The information in this brochure should not be regarded as legal advice or instruction. Readers should consult a qualified legal professional.
