2 2. SCI Diabetes The latest SCI Diabetes release was implemented on 17 February A full list of the changes and release notes can be viewed within the SCI Diabetes system under the Help section/publications/release Notes. Please note that the links for Diabetic Retinopathy Screening results have now been restored. If you are experiencing any difficulties with this please the DRS team on High-UHB.DiabeticRetinopathyScreening@nhs.net Any new users who require access to the SCI Diabetes system must still adhere to the ehealth process by submitting a completed AR1 form which should be signed off by a clinical lead in your department. Details of how to do this can be found on the Intranet under the ehealth support services hub. Also, password reset requests are done by the user on the main SCI Diabetes home page screen by clicking on the forgotten password link. These requests should not be sent to the SCI Diabetes facilitator (Lisa Steele). 3. Professional Education Funding There is funding available for diabetes related education for health care professionals who work in the Primary Care Setting and deliver care and education to people who have diabetes. To discuss this further, please contact Lorna Grant, Diabetes Specialist Nurse; at lorna.grant4@nhs.net 4. Type 2 Diabetes & Insulin Do you want to know more about taking control? We are seeking your thoughts and ideas! The Community Diabetes Nurse Team are in the process of setting up a course for people with type 2 diabetes managed on insulin to inform, guide, support and provide tools to self manage your diabetes. Currently the Diabetes Team provide a course to patients with Type 1 diabetes/lada, called HEIDI (Highland Education in Diet and Insulin). We want to try and fill that gap for patients with Type 2 diabetes who we see in our service.
3 However, we are seeking insight from you the people who live with diabetes. We have ideas of what we think you would benefit from. But what do you think? Some of the questions we are seeking answers for are: Where would you like sessions to be held? We have facilities in the Diabetes Centre but does this work for people with diabetes or would they prefer a different location, and if so, where? What would attract people to attend an information course? What turns people off attending? What is it that you want to know in relation to your diabetes? What times of the day works best for you? Are there specific days that work better for you (start/middle/end of the week)? Is there anything else you feel would be of benefit for us to know that might help us when developing a programme? We would welcome your thoughts and you can get in touch with Claire Henderson- Hughes (Advanced Practice Community Diabetes Nurse) either via or phone at: Chenderson6@nhs.net or Education Training Argyll & Bute patients: There are structured education programmes for Type 1 and Type 2 patients throughout the Argyll & Bute area. For more information, please contact Seonaid Morrison/Rhonda Noone either by or phone on Seonaid.morrison@nhs.net; Rhonda.noone@nhs.net/ or Podiatry Team: The podiatry team have circulated all the practices asking if they would be interested in podiatry training around the following subjects; delivering tutorials in SCI Diabetes, foot screening/triage including hands on; what/when to refer to podiatry, wound care and dressing choice. If you would like more information on this, please contact either Jane Gorman or Sandra Jones by on jane.gorman2@nhs.net; Sandra.jones7@nhs.net.
4 6. Diabetic Retinopathy Screening The DRS service has had to make some venue changes recently to accommodate the needs of our growing patient base and to support our screening staff working out and about in the community. In order to maximise the amount of clinic appointments we can offer and to allow our staff to stay longer in particular areas in order to try and provide patients with more dates and access to the service, we have increased time in the community hospital sites nearest to each community served, as opposed to trying to travel and set up equipment in every individual GP practice. We have found that this does not accommodate the majority of our patients as often small practices have a very limited window for people to attend and appointments are lost by either people not responding to invitations or the amount of time it takes to return to that particular area. This will impact on some patient choices however, the service is committed to providing equity of access to the whole area and have compensated by opening up more appointments as near as possible to our communities for a longer period of time. This also allows us to have clinics available much quicker for the administration function in the booking team at Raigmore. The current clinic rota for DRS up to the end of September 18 can be found online at: Changes to Appointments in Argyll & Bute We are now pleased to be able to offer our own appointments for patients in the Argyll & Bute area who require a slit lamp examination. This is the next stage exam in screening when a patient fails the photography exam. Previously, we would have referred people into the nearest eye clinic for this review but we now have our own hospital optometrist who will see patients at Cowal Dunoon, Lorn & Isles Hospital in Oban, Mid Argyll Hospital in Lochgilphead, Campbeltown Hospital, Victoria Hospital in Rothesay, and the Victoria Integrated Care Centre in Helensburgh. We will write out to the patient following their attendance at a photo examination which might be either in the local approved optician practice or by our screening team in some areas and will ask them to ring the Raigmore booking team on to make a suitable slit lamp appointment. There has been some confusion around this in primary care. Please do not refer the patient to the eye clinic to have this examination carried out. The DRS service will deal with all onward diabetic retinopathy referrals by communicating either directly with the patient or informing the eye clinic direct.
5 7. Updated HbA1c Shared Clinical Guideline In order to try and clarify some queries on this guideline we have updated the content slightly. Please check this out on the Intranet at: If you have any materials or updates which need to be included on the website, please get in touch with Lisa Steele Highland diabetes website:
