1 Autumn 2014 Newsletter Children Diabetes Service Newsletter Contact Us: The diabetes team: Or Your Newsletter If you have any comments to make,would like an event publicized or have an inspiring story or an achievement to tell us about then please contact us (pictures gratefully received) see above for address Change of location for the Crosshouse Teenage Diabetes Clinic The Teenage Transition Diabetes clinic normally held in 1C on the first Monday of the month will be relocating to The Adult Diabetes Centre at Lister Street Crosshouse Hospital and will now be on the 3 rd Wednesday of the month. This change will formally take place from January 2015 so anyone with an outstanding clinic appointment for this year should still attend ward 1c on the Mondays, but re appointments will be scheduled for the Wednesday clinic. Hopefully this will give our young people the chance to familiarize themselves with the adult diabetes centre and the adult diabetes team while still having the familiar faces of the paediatric diabetes team in attendance. World Diabetes Day is marked each year on 14 th November. For World diabetes day 2014 JDRF want to make #TypeOnesie even bigger than last year. So why not become a #TypeOnesie for a day. Being a TypeOnesie involves being sponsored for wearing a onesie to school or work. Why not get you classmates or colleagues to join you For more info and fundraising packs follow the link

2 Diabetes Film Stars A couple of years ago members of our Diabetes Team and children and young people from our clinic were asked to take part in the making of a film about Type 1 Diabetes. We were also filmed during our annual adventure weekend at Barcaple which will explain why some of the members of the Diabetes Team look a little silly! We have now been given the finished product. Click on the link below to view, see how many faces you recognize. You can now register with the my diabetes my way website which gives patients with diabetes access to their health records. When you come to clinic we regularly check your height, weight, blood pressure HbA1c and carry out various annual blood tests. These values are held as part of your medical record by NHS Scotland and can now be viewed. It is important to be aware of your own results and what they mean and the status of your diabetes control in order to stay healthy. This document was put together by Childhood & Adolescent Diabetes Scotland it is supported by Diabetes Scotland and NHS Scotland. It outlines the responsibilities of schools, parents/carers and children and young people with diabetes in schools.

3 Local School raises Diabetes awareness and funds for Diabetes UK A Big Well Done to the teachers and pupils in Primary 1 at Greenmill Primary school in Cumnock who recently put on a play about Type1 diabetes and healthy lifestyle. Greenmill Primary has 3 pupils with type 1 diabetes with 2 pupils in primary 1. They performed it at their primary 1 assembly and all the parents and relatives came along they also invited Fiona Clark Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse from the team. It was excellent and helped the children understand more about Type 1 diabetes and what it means for their classmates. The school also held a Go Blue Day in May to support Diabetes UK and through that and other donations have raised the grand total of 560. Their Primary 7 pupil Beth Senior who also has Type 1 diabetes did a sponsored climb up Ben Nevis. Well Done to everyone involved for all their hard work..

4 Troon Petanque Club raises money for Diabetes UK There is a charity competition organized every year by Troon Petanque Club. As one of our children Vivian Poka s dad is a member and another member has a grandchild with diabetes this year they supported people living with diabetes. On the 15th June the club collected 420. Well Done! Pictured below is Vivian and her mum with some of the club members and Vivian with the cheque. Clocks change Remember the clocks go back an hour on Sunday 26 th October Remember to change the time on your blood glucose meters and your pumps!!
