Objective of Seminar Diabetes is increasing in epidemic proportion: The latest WHO estimate for diabetes is 171 million in 2000 ( This will increase to at least 366 million by 2030 without urgent action. The rate of increase is especially high in Asia. Diabetes in Japan and Korea is expected to be 8.9 and 3.4 million, respectively, at The number of end stage of renal disease attributed to diabetes is increasing year by year: Diabetes causes about 5% of all deaths globally each year. Diabetic nephropathy, one of diabetic microvascular complications, is the leading cause of end stage of renal disease requiring renal replacement therapy. Furthermore, diabetic patients under dialysis therapy have higher risk for cardiovascular events as well as mortality, as compared to those without diabetes. 3

4 In order to reduce mortality and morbidity and to improve the quality of life of patients with diabetes, we must continue basic as well as clinical research and provide forum for international exchanges of information.: The Japan-Korea Basic Scientific Cooperation Program FY 2012 is will be a forum to exchange our understanding of the molecular mechanism of diabetic nephropathy and to search for new therapeutic targets of diabetic nephropathy as the previous 8 seminars were. 8.
