1 GENERAL INFORMATION Paediatric Epilepsy Training (PET) courses were developed by the British Paediatric Neurology Association to improve the diagnosis and management of children with epilepsies for general paediatricians, trainees and nurses. PET courses have run successfully within the UK since 2005 and have educated over 5,000 attendees. The courses were developed by a team of Consultant Paediatric Neurologists, Consultant Paediatric Neurophysiologists, Paediatricians with an epertise in epilepsy and Epilepsy Specialist Nurses, and provide a consensus view for general paediatricians to use to: improve their diagnosis of epileptic and non-epileptic attacks; improve the standard of care; and be aware when to liaise with and refer to Consultant Paediatric Neurologists. Three levels of courses have been developed: PET1 (1-day course), PET2 (2-day course) and PET3 (2-day course). Each course has standardised course materials each course is the same no matter where an attendee chooses to attend. Level 1 is aimed at those who contribute to the initial or ongoing care of a child with epilepsy or seizures in the acute or community setting. PET2 and PET3 are designed for those who lead ongoing care of children with epilepsies. It is recommended that all paediatricians, paediatricians in training, epilepsy specialist nurses, Emergency Department (ED) staff attend PET1. PET2 covers seizures in relation to infants and young children with PET3 focussing on older children and adolescents. Each course builds on knowledge gained from the previous course. Alongside PET2 and PET3, a 1-day PET EEG course is available, aimed at those who request EEGs. Paediatricians who wish to learn more about epilepsy after completion of PET are encouraged to enrol for the BPNA Distance Learning epilepsy unit ( PET courses are delivered by a faculty of Consultant Paediatric Neurologists and Paediatricians with an epertise in epilepsy. The programme contains short didactic whole-group lectures and interactive workshops. There are many opportunities within the courses to consider grey cases, share eperience in the real world, and debate the evidence. Pre-course reading is provided to attendees. The size of workshops is limited to ensure attendees gain the most from the eperience. Whilst PET courses are not mandatory in the UK, they have become the accepted gold standard of epilepsy education. It has become epected amongst paediatricians themselves that anyone working with children with seizures should have attended the PET courses. The PET Development Committee in the UK updates and revises course materials every 2-3 years (last revision September 2013). The net update is due for delivery Revision of materials takes into consideration: Feedback from faculties at all courses Feedback from attendees at all courses Developments in epilepsy management, medication, diagnostic techniques etc Recommendations from establishments such as the UK National Institute for Health and Care Ecellence (NICE) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) Changes in terminology, classification from establishments such as International League Against Epilepsy etc PET1 Khartoum This course has been developed to improve practice within childhood epilepsies. It is suitable for all health professionals providing primary or secondary level care for children with epilepsy including: Consultant paediatricians Trainee paediatricians, trainee paediatric neurologists and trainees in neurodisability Consultants in Accident and Emergency and those in training It is also recommended for all those planning to undertake PET2 training should first complete a PET1 course Nurses in primary care, A&E and paediatrics Neurophysiologists and EEG technicians
