4 Types of Emergency Exercises A Tabletop exercise is a low stress activity in which utility personnel assigned emergency roles and responsibilities are gathered to discuss, in a non-threatening environment, various simulated emergency situations. The tabletop exercise is designed to train and familiarize personnel with their roles and responsibilities within the organizational emergency response plan and the overall emergency management system.

6 Types of Emergency Exercises A Field exercise is a low stress activity in which utility personnel assigned emergency roles and responsibilities conduct field operations in a controlled environment. The Field exercise is designed to train and familiarize personnel with their roles and responsibilities while responding to simulated field conditions.

8 Types of Emergency Exercises A Mutual Aid exercise is an activity in which utility personnel assigned emergency roles and responsibilities respond to a neighboring utility to conduct field operations in a controlled environment. The Mutual Aid exercise is designed to train and familiarize personnel with their roles when responding to other agencies or when accepting help from another agency.

12 Participants, cont. To plan a successful exercise, you must have the correct players. Not all players are needed for each type of exercise. Obviously depending on the size of your organization, some of the roles may be combined with others, or may not even exist. Who are some of the participants in your agency that aren t on this list?

13 Frequency How often should we conduct these exercises? The frequency, type, and size of your exercises should be determined by the size of your agency, the level of skill your employees have, and the readiness of your organization to conduct these exercises.

14 Supplies & Equipment It is important that all participants have a copy of your scope, scenario, and plan for the exercise. This is also a good time to check your Emergency Action Plan or Emergency Response Plan for accuracy, availability and updates.

23 Building a Scenario, cont. Develop similar to a movie script, make it as realistic as possible Make the scenario agency specific Involve a major upcoming event Photos, Maps, Audio Twists, Newsflashes Ensure all business areas are affected

24 Building a Scenario, cont. May want to incorporate local emergency management personnel Timeline the scenario to meet real time reactions Consider incorporating employee injuries, communication issues, hardware or software issues, shifts, food, exposure to unknown vulnerabilities.

25 Conducting an Exercise Review any evacuation routes and assembly points for facilities Remind participants to only utilize cell phones and other communication equipment necessary for the scenario Review the objectives, goals, and scope Emphasize safe environment

26 Conducting an Exercise, cont. Accept the scenario, ask participants not to fight it Make sure you stick to the time limit Have assistants or facilitators act as umpires if necessary Hold leaders and participants to deadlines for action items
