I finally broke down and bought myself an Series 2 Nike+ Apple Watch for Christmas a few months ago, and today I will breakdown my full experience. [Fade Music Up and Out] Just a couple of months ago I finally took the plunge and bought myself an Apple Watch I have been waiting for a few years and finally found my reason to get one. But, should you? If you do, how should you use it? Which features are best? How does it break down in terms of the good, the bad, and the ugly? Today, I will cover ALL of that and more! Let s get started! Should You Buy an Apple Watch? My experience Why I bought it Built-in GPS for running That s it
4 4 The good 1. Built-in GPS for running Super easy to go for a run Tracks distance, pace, and time Nike+ syncs to your iphone and online profile Had one software glitch, which was solved by reinstalling WatchOS 2. Activity Monitoring Calories Burned Time Exercising Hours Standing Breathing App 3. ApplePay Simple and easy Doesn t require an iphone The bad 1. Many apps are ridiculous on a watch Using the mobile-version is lightyears better for many apps
5 5 Texting Google Maps Photos Keynote 2. Have to charge it daily, and update software 2 things not required by normal athletic watches 3. Not indestructible I bump it into things all the time High chance I will break the screen soon My older running watches were super tough and could handle anything The ugly 1. Nearly useless without an iphone Totally dependent on the phone Can t use Siri Can t use many apps at all The key breakthrough that will make the Apple Watch truly amazing it total
6 6 independence -- never relying on the iphone to function 2. Had to wipe it and reinstall the operating system twice Glitchy and annoying 3. Still too complicated As much as I love Apple, this device is a misstep Most features are complicated and clunky Needs lots of streamlining in the future Criteria for buying an Apple Watch 1. Does the Apple Watch have at least ONE key feature that would dramatically change your life? GPS for running, quick access to info on your wrist, etc. 2. Is that feature worth $500? Many GPS watches are much cheaper
7 7 3. Is there another device on the market that is cheaper or more effective for this one feature you want so badly? Apple doesn t own this market. You can and you should do some market research first. Optimizing Your Apple Watch for Health & Productivity Best Features to Use 1. GPS for running Requires Series 2 Nike+ is a great benefit 2. Activity Monitoring Calories Burned Time Exercising Hours Standing 3. Nozbe Requires the phone to use Siri
8 8 But, great for adding a new task on the fly 4. Breathing App Great reminder to slow down, meditate, and breathe 5. Heart Rate Resting heart rate Tracks pulse during workouts Productivity Tips 1. Turn off notifications 2. Only install apps you actually use 3. Use a task manager that has an Apple Watch app (Nozbe) 4. Use ApplePay 5. Use any app that actually saves you time (or is dramatically easier than using your phone) My Overall Impression It is the worst Apple Product I have ever owned I use to work for Apple! I LOVE Apple products I have owned 5 mac computers, 3 iphones, 3
9 9 AppleTVs, 3 ipod Shuffles, an ipod Touch, an ipad, an Airport Extreme, and dozens of other little gadgets. I don t love it. I was speaking at a conference last month and the hotel that hosted the event had an elaborate spa facility, complete with massage therapists, hot tubs, steam rooms, and saunas. I don t often treat myself to this kind of luxury, so I thought a couple hours in the spa would be a nice way to relax after giving my speech. It was incredible! Not only was the spa nice, it highlighted immediately how badly I need to relax, and do so a lot more often than once every few years!
13 13 So, I decided to put that idea into action as soon as I returned to Nashville. As I mentioned recently on the show, I joined a local Gold s Gym and have been lifting weights there over the winter months. What I had not taken advantage of, until a few weeks ago, was the sauna and steam room in the locker room. Not many guys use either one of these, so it was easy to slip in and test it out for myself. I quickly realized that a sauna after a hard workout is a great way to relax and cool down, so to speak. Saunas are intense, especially when they reach 180 F, so take it easy if you re new to them. You don t want to find yourself passed out or getting sick from overheating. Also, DON T wear your Apple Watch! It does provide heart rate and a timer, but it overheats and will damage the watch. I overheated my Apple Watch twice in one 15-minute session in the sauna. If you don t have access to a sauna or steam room, you likely can treat yourself to a hot tub,
14 14 bubble bath, or just a hard sweat on a hot summer day. Do whatever you can do to help yourself relax and rejuvenate after a hard workout or hard week at the office. It really is an amazing experience. [Opening Night Music] Action Steps: #1 Get a smart device to monitor your daily habits. You certainly don t have to get an Apple Watch to monitor your habits, but I do think it s incredible valuable to have up-to-date data at your disposal --- especially right there on your wrist! Whether you get an Apple Watch, FitBit, or some other device, commit to getting something and keep track of your daily healthy habits. The simple motivation and reminder to improve your daily steps, meditation minutes, or miles run is worth the investment. #2 If you do decide to get a smart device -- optimize it and actually use it! Adjusting the settings on your device to match your lifestyle will make the device useful for
15 15 you. When you customize, adjust, and optimize the devices you own -- you then get the full benefit from them. It takes time to experiment and find out what works for you, but it s worth the time. Without customizing them, every device you own will simply ring, bing, and ding with a million distracting and confusing reminders to do things you haven t committed to doing at all. #3 Sweat like a champ. One of the primary benefits or a sauna or steam room is allowing your body to experience a deep sweat. There are many health benefits to sweating, and just 15 minutes in a hot sauna a few times a week can be really beneficial. However you can, get your sweat on!
