History of medi medi began in the small German town of Pausa in the 1920s and has always put patients needs first. The yarn, knitting techniques and pressure profiles have been tried, tested and improved over three generations resulting in a range of top class products. Why choose medi & CEP? Internationally, medi has the experience and expertise gained from producing 8 million pairs of stockings a year. 60 years of making compression hosiery! 3

History of medi CEP Compression is made in Bayreuth Germany at the medi world headquarters. medi has more than just compression hosiery. We also lead with product innovation in: Orthopedics Prosthetics Lymphology Phlebology CEP is The Intelligent Sportswear powered by medi 4

History of medi The USA division of medi is located in Whitsett, NC just outside of Raleigh. All CEP CLONE tights are made in NC and can be made in as little as 7-10 business days clone your customer within days and provide unsurpassed customer service, quality and product technology. medi is a WORLD LEADER in medical compression 5

Circulation in the body Veins: Bring de-oxygenated blood back to the heart Arteries: transport oxygen and nutrient rich blood to the body Lymphatic: collect and return interstitial fluid, including plasma protein to the blood, and thus help maintain fluid balance Lymphati c 6

Circulation in the body Veins: Bring de-oxygenated blood back to the heart Valves in your veins are like little one way doors. They open then close to prevent reflux (flowing back ) of blood. When your muscles flex it helps squeeze the veins and pump blood back to the heart. Graduated compression stockings helps increase the squeeze and pump blood back to your heart. 7

Circulation in the body Medical Compression Stockings: Bring deoxygenated blood back to the heart by providing tighter compression in the ankle (where gravities pressure is the greatest) and gradually decreasing compression as the stocking comes closer to the heart. Compression is measured by mmhg millimeters of mercury Levels of Compression used by medi: 8-15mmHg (Light support won t last long, limited support) 15-20mmHg (moderate support) 20-30mmHg (CEP targeted level) 30-40mmHg (Deep venous issues) 40-50mmHg (Lymphedema, Chronic Venous Insufficiency) medical grade 8

Circulation in the body Arteries: Take oxygen and nutrient rich blood to your extremities Arteries have an outer wall and an inner wall. The inner wall will contract and dilate when it sense external pressure. This maintains the arteries diameter to ensure consistent blood flow While Running with CEP socks you can get 40% more arterial flow in your calf! More on that later. CEP Compression has a consistent compression on the muscles which target arteries and penetrates deep veins. 9

Circulation in the body The lymphatic system consists of organs, ducts, and nodes. It transports a watery clear fluid called lymph. Main functions of the lymphatic system: 1.To collect and return interstitial fluid, including plasma protein to the blood, and thus help maintain fluid balance 2.To defend the body against disease by producing lymphocytes 3.To absorb lipids from the intestine and transport them to the blood. Lymphedema is a problem of excess water and protein. 10

Medical Conditions Varicose veins are rope-like blue vessels under the skin, usually ¼ inch or larger in diameter. They are caused when blood refluxes towards the feet and stretches the normal healthy veins. When blood flow out of the legs through superficial and perforating veins is in adequate, this higher-than-normal pressure can result in damage to the skin. Changes in the skin s color (hyperpigmentation) as well as changes in skin texture. medi graduated compression stockings prevent reflux of blood, promote venous return and are used for prevention of venous disease. 11

Medical Conditions Lymphedema: also known as lymphatic obstruction, is a condition of localized fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system. The lymphatic system returns the interstitial fluid to the thoracic duct and then to the bloodstream, where it is re-circulated back to the tissues Stage 3 Lymphedema Lymphedema (also see Elephantiasis) may be inherited (primary) or caused by injury to the lymphatic vessels (secondary). It is most frequently seen after lymph node dissection, surgery and/or radiation therapy, in which damage to the lymphatic system is caused during the treatment of cancer, most notably breast cancer We make custom compression Flat Knit garments to help act as a counter part in transporting lymph fluid out of the limbs. 12

Medical Conditions DVT: deep vein thrombosis (also known as deep venous thrombosis and usually abbreviated as DVT) is the formation of a blood clot ("thrombus") in a deep vein. Caused by decreased blood flow, damage to the vessel wall or hypercoagulability ( increase tendecy of the blood to clot) A DVT can occur without symptoms, but in many cases the affected extremity will be painful, swollen, red, warm and the superficial veins may be engorged. The most serious complication of a DVT is that the clot could dislodge and travel to the lungs, which is called a pulmonary embolism (PE). DVT is a medical emergency. All limb swellings however trivial, should be regarded as a DVT until proven otherwise. Untreated lower extremity DVT has a 3% PE-related mortality rate. 13

Medical Conditions DVT: Deep Vein Thrombosis One of the most important things an endurance athlete can learn is to wear graduated compression during travel. A DVT can be deadly when part of the clot breaks away and gets to the lungs or brain. About 85% of air travel thrombosis victims are athletic, usually endurance-type athletes like marathoners. People with slower resting blood flow are at greater risk of stasis, stagnant blood subject to clotting. Also, they are more likely to have bruises and sore muscles that can trigger clotting. No other risk factor comes close to this. How can CEP help? Wearing graduated compression prevents DVT and keeps blood moving towards the heart. 14

Athletic Conditions Calf Cramps Typical Causes: Dehydration, over worked calves, lack of nutrition and / or poor circulation. Shin Splints Typical Causes: Biomechanical inefficiencies (flat feet, poor running form etc.) overload from exercise is doing to much too soon, running on hard surfaces and/ or wearing bad shoes. CEP Compression brings oxygen rich blood filled with nutrients and hydration to the muscles. It also reduces vibration which can improve muscle efficiency and mechanics. In addition you ll flush out lactic acid and improve circulation to your calves while promoting healing. 15

Athletic Conditions Achilles Pain and Issues Causes: poor biomechanics, hill running, overuse, lack of calf flexibility, rapidly increasing mileage, starting up too quickly How will CEP Socks help? CEP Compression will keep the swelling down and help support the Achilles. You will increase circulation which can be a difficult for that area of your foot. The padded area in the sock protects the Achilles from irritation. CEP Rx Achilles Brace (with silicone heel cups) 16

CEP Compression in Sports How have we become an essential part of some of the most elite endurance athlete s success? Medical Studies Athlete Experience 17

CEP Compression in Sports 18

CEP Compression in Sports medi compression socks are designed to bring blood back to the heart through the veins. CEP compression doesn t just help with venous return. CEP help with arterial flow as well. How is CEP increasing arterial blood flow by 30-40%? Arteries have an outer wall and an inner wall. The inner wall will contract and dilate when it senses external pressure. (myogenic pressure) CEP Compression has a CONSISTENT targeted compression on the calf opening the inner arterial wall and increasing blood flow. What does this mean? 19

CEP Compression in Sports Can CEP help your performance? In this published medical study done by Dr. Kemmler at the University of Erlangen-Nurnberg 21 runners showed an overall 5% increase in performance while using 6% less energy. We guarantee the athlete will have a 100% positive experience. None of us are the same but one things for sure is CEP can and will help anyone with many different things in addition to performance. Andy Potts Course record Ironman CDA Joe Gambles Course record Ironman WI Timo Bracht Course record Ironman AZ Josh Cox 50K American Record Holder 20

CEP Compression for Recovery The number one reason athletes choose to wear compression is for recovery. We just went over how CEP helps with performance so lets review how CEP compression helps for recovery. Lactic acid is mainly produced in muscle cells and red blood cells. It forms when the body breaks down carbohydrates to use for energy during times of low oxygen levels. Your body's oxygen level might drop during intense exercise or if you have an infection or disease. Medical grade compression penetrates the deep veins and helps flush out lactic acid in the veins re-circulating it back to the heart 21

CEP Compression Tips TIPS: 1. Make sure the compression product being worn is Graduated Compression this means its tighter at the ankle (lowest point) and decreases as it comes closer to the heart. 1. The compression must be at least 20mmHg in the ankle to actually penetrate the deep veins and provide maximum benefit. 1. Taking a circumference measurement of the leg is essential to get the correct compression shoe size isn t important 2. Not all compression products will provide medical benefit 3. Avoid products that are tighter in the calf or thigh this can do more harm than good. 4. Machine wash tumble dry low heat 5. All CEP products come with a 30 day wearing comfort guarantee 6. Check out our video on YouTube of how to put on CEP Socks 22
