2 Spider & Varicose Veins It s more common than you think Spider veins are small blue or red veins shaped like tree branches that often appear later in life on the calves and ankles. Varicose veins are veins that have become enlarged and tortuous where the leaflets of the valves no longer meet properly, and the valves do not work
3 Increasing age. As you get older, the valves in your veins may weaken and not work as well. Lack of movement. Sitting or standing for a long time may force your veins to work harder to pump blood to your heart. Medical history. Being born with weak vein valves increases your risk. Hormonal changes. These occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Pregnancy. During pregnancy, there is a huge increase in the amount of blood in the body. This can cause veins to enlarge. Obesity. Being overweight or obese can put extra pressure on your veins.
4 Edema ( 水腫 ), is swelling caused by fluid retention - excess fluid is trapped in the body's tissues. Common Cause of edema Sedentary lifestyle - is more prevalent among people who do not exercise at all, and walk very little. Standing or sitting still for long - if you stand or sit still for a long time there is a much higher chance of swelling. Pregnancy - during pregnancy the woman releases hormones which encourage the body to retain fluids. High altitudes - especially when combined with physical exertion.
5 How Graduated Compression Socks help improve blood circulation The pressure in the stockings is graded and this allows for the stockings to constantly squeeze the leg muscles, amplifying the leg muscles movement. Increase Blood flow This motion helps to drive blood back to the heart reduce swelling in the feet and prevent blood clot formation. Stocking compress the vein to simulate muscle compression to drive blood back to heart
