Thanks to our tremendous benefactors, we were able to showcase our commitment to the vision and our mission by: Growing our Family Medicine Residency program Enhancing Gifts of Gratitude donor program Expanding participation in student mentoring program Leveraging research to reduce breast cancer surgeries Expanding bereavement education and training Attracting philanthropic and grant resources to help fund priority programs Jack W. 2 MEDICAL EDUCATION Message from the Medical Education Office Gregory P. Thompson, MD, medical director Our outstanding Medical Education program makes us a destination for those looking to train at a top-tier medical facility. As a result, we had 2,700 students, residents and fellows complete their medical rotations at Gundersen Health System in Our program is possible because of the dedication of superb leaders, mentors and educators, and especially because of the support from benefactors who make success like these possible: Jennifer A. Lee, director 513 undergraduate nursing students completed 841 rotations residents and fellows currently train at Gundersen Health System Used for educational programming, the Rasmus Center, Overholt Auditorium and Ross Conference Room were enhanced and re-opened, and Chestnut Commons was dedicated all named for exceptional medical educators

Agger, MD, medical director This is an exciting time for medical breakthroughs. We are seeing some innovative life-saving treatments for cancers, for example, where we once could offer little hope. This is due to the relentless pursuits of ever-better treatments by our team of researchers; our patients who are willing to partner with us on healthcare s cutting edge; innovations like our new genomic Vicki L. McHugh, director sequencer; and, of course, our many donors who make this all possible. The future of medicine is here thanks to you! In 2017 we: Produced 228 publications/ presentations Consented 80 percent of patients approached for non-cancer clinical trials up from 67 percent in 2016

4 Brought in nearly 1 million in grant funding for 2018 Received National Cancer Institute (NCI) award for patient enrollment into NCI clinical trials Established national benchmarks for breast surgery Received grants to expand the Precision Medicine Molecular Tumor board in western Wisconsin and expand patient enrollment in clinical trials PHILANTHROPY Message from the Philanthropy Office Robyn R. 6 FUND DISTRIBUTION We take very seriously our responsibility to distribute funds in support of organizational and community programs while honoring donor intent. These grants support a variety of healthcare-related projects such as: 1.5 million in grants awarded to more than 100 Gundersen departments, partners and community organizations 1.3 million from donor-restricted funds used for medical education, research, Global Partners and Resolve through Sharing programs Over 200 guests attended the Rehab Celebration to celebrate and recognize their recovery achievements alongside Gundersen staff. 967,700 in internal grants approved by Grant Allocations Committee 62,000 helped cancer patients through 530+ grants from Paula s Purse 20,000 to the Norma J. Vinger Center for Breast Care to provide women who are uninsured or underinsured with free mammograms Distributed 110,000 in support of Clinical Pastoral Education 15 new funds were created, including funds to support Family Medicine Residency, Alzheimer s programs, Great Rivers 2-1-1, addiction programs and more

7 CHILDREN S MIRACLE NETWORK HOSPITALS Children s Miracle Network Hospitals, a service of Gundersen Medical Foundation, is committed to saving and improving the lives of children. Grants are given to assist children and their families, support pediatric programs and services, purchase specialty equipment and for pediatric medical research and education. Highlights for 2017 include: 1.1 million to help kids and families in our communities to provide: Gas cards and meal tickets Camps, workshops, horse therapy, music therapy and more Technology to assist with communication Specialized equipment Part-time social worker that works with families directly Small refrigerators for pediatric hospital rooms Mock operating room to teach and reduce anxieties in pediatric patients 5,584 INDIVIDUALS 22,230 helped 14 families with respite services 592,792 given for equipment, programs, and pediatric medical research and education CMN Hospitals Heroes Blake Oldham, Chloe Burkhalter, Madelyn Payne, Justus Heise, and Sophia Bisek helped to raise funds and awareness

8 RESOLVE THROUGH SHARING For over 35 years, Resolve Through Sharing (RTS) has provided cutting-edge bereavement education to healthcare professionals assisting grieving individuals. In 2017 RTS: Sigurd B. Gundersen III, MD, medical partner Mary Beth Hensel, director Created a miscarriage tool kit for healthcare professionals, It s Never too Early Trained nearly 1,000 support staff; designated nearly 300 Coordinators Content experts, Dr. Rana Limbo and Marie Walter, RN, contributed to 9 professional publications RTS training should be used in every hospital or health care facility and every health care professional should have this training. Sarah Sealy, RN, RTS attendee, West Covina, Calif. GLOBAL PARTNERS Through inspired volunteerism, expanded outreach and new partnerships, we are strengthening our community-tocommunity relationships and creating long-lasting impact locally and globally. Since 2008, more than 620 volunteers have participated in Global Partners trips. Here are just a few of the highlights from our program in 2017: Sigurd B. Gundersen III, MD, medical partner Elizabeth J. Arnold, director At Hamilton School in La Crosse, 56 mentors spent 1,547 hours with students; 11 classrooms were adopted by Gundersen departments

9 In Nicaragua 537 eye exams were conducted, 323 pairs of glasses distributed and 400 books donated Faculty and student nurses from Western Wisconsin Technical College s Nursing program went to Pine Ridge Reservation In Ethiopia 500 dental screenings were conducted and 159 physical exams given to students GRANTS OFFICE Click here to read the Global Partners Year-End Report Grant money is awarded to support important areas of medical education, basic, clinical and translational research, as well as healthcare-related programs. In 2017, we received: Sigurd B. Gundersen III, MD, medical partner Tobias C. Wolf, manager 2.8 million in grant support for healthcarerelated projects 448,000 grant from Wisconsin Department of Health Services to expand our Family Medicine Residency program 90,000 from UW-Madison and Health and Human Services for services and resources for AIDS patients 54,900 grant from Department of Health and Human Services to develop a training program for drug addiction treatment

10 FINANCIAL OVERVIEW We always strive to be good stewards of the gifts you entrust to us. To that end, we believe in transparency in our financial accounting. For 2017: Total Income 34.8 Million Total income for the year increased from the prior year due to increased Gundersen Health System support as well as favorable investment returns Federal Medical Education Support (IME/GME) through GHS Sponsored Programs Philanthropic Contributions Gundersen Health System Operational Support Investment Return 0.00 Medical Education 53% Medical Research 21% Board Reserve and Other Unrestricted 48% Donor Permanently Restricted 31% Patient & Admin. Community Health 7% Development 10% 9% Donor Temporarily Restricted 21% Total Operating Expenses and Fund Distribution 26.9 Million Total expenses decreased compared to prior year due in part to the discontinuation of Respecting Choices and end of the Campus Renewal capital campaign. Net Assets 63.8 Million Net assets increased 8.0 million from 2016 due to favorable investment returns, increased Gundersen Health System support and reduced Capital Campaign expenses.
