Stats: Stella just finished kindergarten; this summer, she plans to swim in her Grammy's pool and go camping! Stella began her journey with the Maine Children s Cancer Program just one week shy of her first birthday. After months of not feeling well, numerous doctors appointments and a fateful trip to the ER, it was discovered that Stella had T Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. It was a long road of treatment that lasted two and a half years, but the staff at MCCP and The Barbara Bush Children s Hospital were there for every step of the journey. Stella s parents, Stacey and Mony Hang, are very grateful for the care their little girl received: Because of the Maine Children s Cancer Program, Stella is here with us now, a healthy, normal 6 year old girl. Her smile lights up a room, and her enthusiasm for life is contagious. Dr. Chaleff and the folks at MCCP and BBCH saved Stella s life. She couldn t be more proud or excited to be Slugger Kid. 2 Maine Children s Cancer Program Day at the Sea Dogs - Sunday, May 18th May 18th offered up perfect weather, a Sea Dogs win, and the opportunity for hundreds of MCCP supporters and community members! TD Bank Strike Out Cancer in Kids Media Day - Tuesday, May 20th This year s SOCK Media Day saw a great turnout of local media affiliates. WMTW-8, WCSH-6 and WGME, as well as several local papers covered the 20th anniversary of SOCK and the big reveal: $4,418, raised to date!

4 June Sponsor Focus As the TD Bank Strike Out Cancer in Kids program rolls in to its 20th year, we take a look at how this partnership got started. In 1994, the Portland Sea Dogs team began its first season at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine. During that season, Charlie Eshbach, the General Manager of the Sea Dogs, and John Menario, then Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Peoples Heritage Bank (now TD Bank), discussed how the two organizations could combine their resources to support a community activity which would enrich the quality of life in Maine. They agreed that the program should be focused on Maine youth, and should support the Maine Children s Cancer Program (MCCP). Charlie and John wanted to create a baseball season fundraising activity for MCCP, in which community leaders and businesses could form teams and pledge an amount of money for each Sea Dogs strikeout. The average number of strikeouts per season, including playoff games, totals nearly 1,000. A pledge of $0.10 per strikeout would commit approximately $100; a $1.00 per strikeout pledge would be approximately $1,000. The goal in 1995 was $20,000: a meaningful beginning and a gauge for future Strike Out Cancer in Kids goals. In that inaugural year, Peoples Heritage Bank (now TD Bank) announced a corporate contribution of $15 per strikeout each year. TD Bank continues to be the lead sponsor for Strike Out Cancer in Kids each year! In addition to this significant corporate support, many TD Bank employees become involved in the program year after year by leading SOCK teams. Special recognition goes to Michael Turcotte, Vice President of Derivatives Operations at TD Bank, who leads the SOCK Team, TD Strikes Out Cancer and comes up with creative ways of increasing his team s fundraising totals each year. In May, Mike organized his 12th Annual Strike Out Cancer in Kids Red Sox Bus Trip; by selling tickets to this event and holding a raffle on the bus ride from Portland to Boston, Mike raised a lot of money for children receiving cancer treatment at MCCP!

Start a Strike Out Cancer in Kids Fundraising Team in 3 EASY Steps: You can participate in SOCK as an individual and make a per-strikeout pledge or flat donation, but it's much more fun to be part of a SOCK fundraising team! Ask your friends, families or co-workers to join your team and to register on your team s fundraising page at Have your teammates make a flat donation or a per-strikeout pledge, and have them ask their contacts to do the same. Come up with other creative methods of raising funds (bake sales, raffles, jeans days at work, etc.) to add to your team s fundraising total. SOCK teams compete against each other to raise the most funds - it's a perfect way to have fun and support a great cause at the same time!
