WINNING THE FIGHT OF YOUR LIFE! Greg Cantwell Stage IV Glioblastoma Survivor Turned Caregiver
Seven Important Topics Statistics vs. individual patients Importance of relationships with family & friends and other support persons Positive attitude matters! Psychological dimensions of a life-threatening illness Tips on how to effectively communicate with doctors, nurses & other healthcare professionals Eat the good stuff! What helped me and what didn t Reverse roles Survivor to Caregiver
Statistics vs. Individual Patients Many people Broad categories Averages Percentages Each person is unique Handle medication and illness differently Physical condition Strength Age Past medical history Habits
Importance of Relationships Help at home! cleaning, cooking, laundry, going to the store/errands Kids! will you have enough energy? Transportation Financial issues Insurance issues
Support Network Patient Main Support Person (spouse) Family Members Friends Indirect Friends Doctors, Nurses & other Healthcare Professionals Support Groups
My Support Persons!
My Son Joseph & My New Family!
Other Support Resources American Cancer Society National Brain Tumor Society Angel Flights Imerman Angels Provides 1-on-1 Cancer Support Connecting Cancer Fighters, Survivors and Caregivers.
Positive Attitude Matters! Do things that you like to do (when you have enough energy) This is not a time to feel stressed Try to exercise. Go for a walk. You might want to feel sorry for yourself, try not to Think positive I will beat this!
Effective Communication Don t be afraid to voice your opinion Write your questions down so you don t forget them

Eat The Good Stuff! Foods high in Antioxidants Red Beans, Pinto beans, Soybeans, Pecans Blueberries, Strawberries, Raspberries, Blackberries Apples, Grapes, plums, cantaloupe Citrus fruits such as pink Grapefruit and Oranges Nuts esp. Walnuts Potatoes, Broccoli, Garlic, Parsley, Carrots, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cucumbers, Squash, Eggplant Dark green leafy vegetables Red Wine Black Tea & Green Tea Pomegranate Juice Dried Fruits such as Dried Apricots, Prunes, Dates, Cranberries, Cherries and Raisins
What Didn t Help Didn t Help Being told statistics Negativity from my spouse at the time Being told statistics
What Helped Positive attitude Supportive family and friends Being an active member of my care team Having all treatment options prior to surgery Having a good sense of humor Talking to people about what I was going through Researching the treatments I would be receiving
Reverse Roles Survivor to Caregiver If you can, PAY IT BACK! Going through a serious illness like cancer and being in the hospital as much as I was made me appreciate more what the doctors and nurses have to go through every day. So when I met my current wife who has Cystic Fibrosis, diabetes, has had a liver transplant and is on the kidney transplant waiting list there was no doubt in my mind that I would be able to provide the care that she needs at home and be her Patient Advocate when in the hospital.
Lisa and I with Dr. McCue on our wedding day - A day I shouldn t have lived to see!
Lisa, her mom, and Cindy, the Liver Giver - Without Cindy, Lisa wouldn t be here today.
Austrailia
Thailand
Europe
Me & Joseph / Lisa & Joseph

There is hope, we are not statistics!
Staying positive can be hard at times but you have to focus on what you believe your outcome will be. I am going to kick cancer's butt! Stay strong, get rest when you need it and call on your friends for support. To admit that you need help is not a sign of weakness. You are not a statistic! You should be treated as a patient not as a diagnosis. - Greg Cantwell -
