Note 6 HC B&PW News A Publication of Hopkins County B&PW President s Message Welcome new members - Dana Weaver and Emily Tomlinson! The members of Hopkins County BPW Club are delighted you chose to join our club. October is Breast Cancer Awareness & Domestic Violence Awareness Month. That means it is time to paint and decorate pink pumpkins to raise funds for our annual project. This is the month to help women get preventative testing, such as mammograms and pap smears, at the Hopkins County Health Department. Anyone can paint and sell the pumpkins on their own or take them to Curves or the Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio to be sold. Purses for a Purpose is an additional fundraiser that will be held during October for the same cause. If you have any questions regarding this fundraiser, call Sharon Smith, at Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio ( ). Remember, all funds raised from these activities go to the Hopkins County Health Department for women that cannot afford to pay for these tests. It is hard to believe there are only three months left of Before you know it, we will be celebrating a new year. Everyone please to Wanda Morrow (wlmorrow14@yahoo.com), Chairman of National Business Women s Week, your vote for the following awards: Business Equity, Woman of Achievement and Woman of The Year. Also, if you have any ideas for a speaker and/or a topic for the banquet, please let her know. These awards will be presented at the banquet. The RADA and Innisbrook catalogs are here for anyone interested in buying or selling any of these items. Contact Lana Moore ( ) for your catalogs. Applications for BPW/KY Foundation Scholarships are due by October 31. Contact Committee Chair, Nena Matheny, for application information. Please contact our hospitality chair, Algia ( ), if you will be attending the October 2nd meeting. A wonderful way to get the word out regarding the different club events is to post them on your facebook page. Tammy Sanders, President Hopkins County BPW 2012/2013

3 Page 2 of 6 BPW/HC News LEGISLATION COMMITTEE Beth Moore, Chair As chair of the Legislation Committee for Hopkins County BPW, I would like to take this opportunity to remind all members that Election Day is Tuesday, November 6, There are national, state, and local elections on the ballot. Of course, because we live in different election precincts, we will be voting for different candidates in different elections. But all of the positions need to be filled by dependable and honest citizens! Of course, 2012 is a presidential election year. That has certainly dominated much of the news for several months. Perhaps you are almost as tired of some of the campaign advertisements as I am. However, I hope that you have become educated on the issues, read and listened to what the people running for office state as their opinions, and made informed decisions for the future of our government. There are many issues which are important to us as citizens, whether you are a mother, employee, student, or retiree. So, please do your duty and vote on November 6 th. Business & Professional Women of Kentucky Foundation The BPW/KY Foundation awards scholarships to eligible Kentucky residents. The Foundation s aim is to help women and men reach their goal of obtaining a higher education. The application deadlines are October 31 and April 30. The applicant must be a citizen of Kentucky, at least 18 years of age, planning a career in the Kentucky workforce, and attending school, college, or an institution/organization. Eligible programs are academic programs, training to enter the workforce, upgrading work skills, job-related seminars, literacy or GED programs (see the application for a full listing). If you are interested in applying or know someone who could use scholarship support, the application is located on the KFBPW website: bpw-ky.org. You can access the Foundation link (left side of the home page) and the current grant application form will be on the right side of the page. The October 31 deadline is a month away!
