1 REPORTER December 1, 2015 Centennial Celebration Kickoff December 1, 2016 is our 100 th birthday and we have a year of club events leading up to our birthday party evening gala on that date. Thanks to former President Ron Kimble and Sandy, a few years ago our BOD created a Committee to plan this coming year s celebration. Co-Chair Mac McCarley presented a review of next year s events and introduced the planning Committee. He is Co-Chairing the event with Natalie English who could not attend due to Bronchitis (heretofore have we ever known Natalie to be speechless?). Mac said our goal is to encourage each and every business and individual whose life the Rotary Club of Charlotte has touched to join in our celebration. So what are we going to do to celebrate? First John Tabor talked about the service events because already for the year we are in the process of taking service above self to another level. John is organizing 100 service projects, 15 of which already have been completed. Terri DeBoo rolled out our Signature Project (click on the below link to learn more about the artist that has been contracted which will be a bronzed bench with a baseball player, located at the BB&T Ballpark. Over it will be a bronzed plaque reflecting its gift from our club and include the Four Way Test. Because the fund raising goal for this project will be over $120,000, it s quite possible that other bench locations may be funded too. Terri thanked our Rotary member, Dan Rajkowski, Charlotte Knights COO, for making their bench location possible and for their willingness to maintain it. Also during 2016 David Zimmerman plans to communicate and update our club s history, especially since 1988 which was the year of our 75 th anniversary when a Charlotte Rotary book was completed that commemorated the first 75 years. The update will be a website link which will provide club and city history updates to today. He needs member volunteers to help with this effort. Nancy McNelis will lend her professional expertise and provide public relations communications for many of our events. She said we may expect to see donated media time, mailings for the December 1 gala, 100 banners on uptown light poles and the NASCAR area skating rink, as well as Business Journal and perhaps Charlotte Observer advertising. Catherine Browning s sub-committee will take responsibility for the December 1 birthday gala. It will be held at The Charlotte Convention Center. All Rotarians and the public will be invited. She anticipates that formal attire will be encouraged. Look for a national or international Rotarian keynote speaker, and wear your

2 dancing shoes. Finally, Mac summarized the presentation, with three asks of our membership: 1. Please provide our committees your ideas and time support 2. Sign up and participate in many of the 100 service projects that are being scheduled. 3. Consider making a contribution or a Sponsorship. Wangzhong is Senior Director, Head of IT Enterprise Architecture for CommScope Inc. Welcome him at wangzhong.lu@commscope.com. He and his family have already signed up for the Christmas morning breakfast project. Planning for the club s holiday program is well underway. Committee chair Bill Griffin announced a special visit from Santa is in the works and invites everyone to bring their children/grandchildren. President Tom Bartholomy presented the Avenues of Service Citation for Individual Rotarians to Bert Voswinkel. Recognizing that the strength of the Rotary ideal is founded on the service carried out by club members worldwide, this citation program provides a means for Rotary clubs to personally recognize a member of the club for outstanding efforts in the five Avenues of Service. Congratulations, Bert. PRIORITY: If you are interested in serving as a host family for Radim, one of the club s exchange students (attends Myers Park High School) between March 1 to May 31, please talk to Ed Wadsworth (ed@wadsworthgroup.net). Ashley & Mark Duncan, Nanelle Napp & Chuck Cocke, Amy & Mark Norman are club members that have, or will be, hosting this year and would be a helpful resource. 100 CLUB PROJECTS Bell Ringing in full swing thanks to Mark Norman for working the volunteer schedule and to Stephanie Hinricks for handling the raffle. 4-6 volunteers are needed each day this week to help count donations dropped into the kettles. 8:30AM-11AM at The Salvation Army Command Center, 4015 Stuart Andrew Blvd (off Clanton Road). 3 Serve Christmas Morning Breakfast at Charlotte Rescue Mission, 12/25 from 5AM-9AM. Contact Joe Penner ) Kim Popky Platelet Challenge is on-going. John zumbrunnen wants 100 platelet donations over the next year and will donate $50 for every donation to the American Red Cross or Community Blood Center. If the goal is met, he will donate an additional $5000.
