2 Last Meeting: (continued) Chairman Leo introduced David listing a vast array of musical commitments currently the responsibilities of this man who is also a member of the Rotary Club of Melbourne, the oldest Club in Australia and our sponsoring Club 80+ years ago. Born in England, David describes himself as ABC Australian by choice. He has been to Sale before and believes Sale is ripe for development suggesting a Very Fast Train would be a huge asset to Sale and the region. David extended an invitation to everyone to visit the Melbourne Club which has 300+ members and meets every Wednesday lunchtime at the Windsor Hotel. He explained that the Club has an Arts Committee, of which he is a member, which organises many arts based events and scholarships. (Editor s note: Perhaps Kevin Maxfield could be persuaded to return to head up such a committee for our Club). David outlined many of the arts activities organised by his Club including: Sponsorship of Sudanese children to learn music with the added plus of them getting to know something about the Australian way of life and visa-versa. The program called Child s Play encourages appreciation of classical music based on the student s own musical interests. Acclaim Awards which raise money to send students selected by auditions to Italy to study music. David also outlined the main reason for his being in Sale which was to present his production of Wagner s Ring Cycle at the Wedge on 7 th June. He described Opera as various sorts of arts working together. The production combines visual animation with young singers and a saxophone based ensemble. Adrian thanked David with an exchange of gifts and banners.
