The end of summer is upon us and for the United Way staff and our Campaign volunteers it is time to implement our plans for the 2005 United Way Campaign. We will be kicking off the London & Middlesex Campaign with Harvest Lunch sponsored by 3M on the 23 rd of September. At this event lunch is served for $5.00 at the John Labatt Centre with a mix of speakers and entertainment by local celebrities. Over the years the event has grown and has been a huge success. If you are available that day come join us for lunch. On October 18 th the joint campaigns are kicked off at the Union Management Breakfast. Kellogg Canada, with the support of BCTGM 154G, has sponsored this event for many years. It gives labour and management from a lot of workplaces an opportunity to talk about things that have made their previous campaigns a success and share that with others. The media and others speak of the substantial need in our community and the importance of having services available to help people in need. We always hope that we personally will not be one of the needy; but for some of our co-workers, friends and families, they have become acutely aware of those needs because they have had to use these services.

2 Page 2 of 8 Help us make this year s Campaign a success. As Bob White past president of the CLC, once said, Solidarity. It s both the reason and the reward for helping one another. Community Services The Young Leaders of Tomorrow program sponsored by London Life has completed its third year, and it has been another resounding success. The program encourages youth 18 to 24 years of age to participate in their community by serving as "interns" on a non-profit Board and/or committee, and provides them with the training and knowledge they need to be effective members. This year, 21 agency Boards participated in the program by providing a young leader with the opportunity to serve - including 12 member agencies and United Way itself. The focus of the program is that "creating leadership capacity among young people in the community today will strengthen our community for tomorrow." While doing research for the Union Counseling Program, I found this great web site that is full of information about services in London and area:

4 Page 4 of 8 Union Counseling Program / Peer Referral Agent Training I would like to thank all the agencies and their staff and volunteers that helped with the Referral Agent Training Program this year. Some agencies hosted sessions, and many people contributed their valuable time. There were 12 new graduates in this year s spring program. The community will be better served by the new graduate referral agents who are trained to help fellow employees find the services they need when they are in crisis. In most cases, participants are involved in a formal Employee and Family Assistance program at their workplace; this complementary training program teaches them to be good listeners and communicators, and to be knowledgeable about services available in their community. I hope to run a Union Counseling Program for seniors this fall. The next Union Counseling Program for workplace referral agents will be next spring. Labour Appreciation Last December Labour and United Way celebrated our joint efforts to make our community a better place for all, honouring some very special labour volunteers. It was our 6 th Annual Labour Appreciation night and it was held at the Marconi Club with over 250 people attending. Twelve labour volunteers from various unions that have volunteered in various capacities with United Way where honoured with awards. The Images of Hope, which is a life-time achievement award, was presented to Tim Carrie of CAW Local 27. At last year s event we also celebrated the 25 years of dedicated work of Gerry Flemming with a big send off and best wishes for a long and happy retirement. This year s event will be December 8 th to be held again with the support of the Marconi Club at their facilities. I would also like extend our thanks to: CAW 27, CAW 1520, Building Trades Council, London & District Labour Council, Public Service Alliance and OPSEIU for their generous support.
