1 D E C E M B E R T H I S S U E Monthly Newsletter October 2018 Stats It takes courage for a survivor of a sexual assault to report the incident to law enforcement or to someone they know. Each month, collects the total number of sexual assaults, including rapes, reported to the Center. The figures below are a snapshot of how many people from the previous month received services from. Advocacy to Hospital 25 Crisis Hot Line Calls 129 In-Person Counseling 34 Follow-ups w/survivors 118 Than you, volunteers! Your support makes a difference in the lives of survivors and the Families we serve. Our Education Department staff conducted 65 presentations and workshops for 1,250 community members, which included youth, students, adults, seniors, and organizations. Receives Generous Donation We want to thank the employees of the County of Riverside Department of Public Social Services (DPPS) for their generous donation towards their monthly Jean Campaign, and for choosing as the beneficiary for January is a member of the Commercially Sexually Exploited Children Committee (CSEC). The donation will be used for providing services to Human Trafficking victims/survivors, and sex trafficking prevention education to youth and adults. Save the Date! 2 Free Self-Defense Classes Join us at the Center on the last Saturday of every month for a free self-defense class. Next classes will be on Saturday, January 26, Call to RSVP at (951) Woman-to-Woman Class /9AM-10AM This class is for 12 years old (with parent s consent) and up. You will learn different types of physical self-defense techniques to defend against an attacker, combine with assertiveness training to elevate your personal power. Kid Power Class / 10AM-11AM Grant Awards We are excited to announce that has received a grant from Pacific Life Foundation. This grant will support the educational programming on preventing child abuse. Also, our P.O.W.E.R Education Department staff received a grant from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). For four years, this grant will support the outreach expansion of the Gender Equity and Youth Leadership program at John W. North High School, and Corona Fundamental School. Student leaders attending these schools will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, learn about gender issues and strategies for preventing sexual violence, and learn how to work as activists to create change within their school community. This class is for ages 4 to 11 years old. Children will be in a safe environment to learn what self-defense is, when to use it and basic physical techniques to use when they are in an uncomfortable situation. They will also be given assertiveness training to elevate their self-esteem. Thank you Pacific Life Foundation and California Department of Public Health for the grant awards! 2 2

4 Volunteer Opportunities Are you interested in volunteering? We always welcome new volunteers. We recognize the important role that volunteers play in our ability to properly serve survivors and their families. Our volunteer program offers opportunities for every skill set and expertise, including professional and personal growth. We also offer flexibility to work around your schedule. Here are the various opportunities we have for you to volunteer: You can be an Advocate Volunteer Volunteers accompany survivors to medical exams, visits with law enforcement, to court, and provide information and referrals. They also response to crisis hot line calls from their homes by connecting to callers through our answering You can be a Speakers Bureau Volunteer Use your public speaking skills in your community to build understanding around issues of sexual assault and other violent acts. You can be an Advisory Committee Member Theses volunteers provide support to the staff and operations of. You can be an Office Support Volunteer We can always use the extra help in the office. Office help will include short-term and long-term projects. You must be 21 years old and up to work directly with survivors, with the exception of volunteering in the office (18 years and up). All potential volunteers will be required to compete an 8 weeks Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor training through.
