4 Did you See Me? "I spent three long nights with my two children in my car before I made the call for help. Did you see me? My boyfriend left me, and even though I worked full time, I could no longer afford the rent on my own. I was evicted and had nowhere to turn. I was afraid and felt hopeless. Most of all, I feared my children would be taken from me. But instead of taking my children, the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P) called Catholic Charities. Within a couple of days, Catholic Charities helped me with a security deposit for a less expensive apartment as well as subsidies to help me get on my feet. I am so grateful for this chance and can't wait until I can give back to families that are struggling like I was." an audio message from Executive Director, Marianne Majewski "At Catholic Charities, we are all about restoring faith in the human spirit." In FY 2017, Catholic Charities helped 852 people get back on their feet by providing short term assistance with rent, security deposits, or utility bills. Often, this assistance keeps families from becoming homeless.

5 Meeting the Challenge of the Affordable Housing Crisis -through partnerships, supportive services and statewide program expansion In every state, for every 100 extremely low-income households, there are less than 36 units of available and affordable rental housing. In Hunterdon, Middlesex, or Somerset County, NJ a resident would have to make $31.81 per hour to afford a two bedroom apartment (National Low-Income Housing Coalition, 2017). In a state where the minimum wage is $8.44 per hour, the challenge to afford housing can be overwhelming. Research indicates that access to affordable housing has far reaching benefits, including a decrease in the number of families who experience food insecurity, emotional distress, and alcohol and drug abuse. Naomi s Way Partnership In 2017, Catholic Charities partnered with American Standard, the plumbing brand that is part of LIXIL, to upgrade twelve transitional housing units into permanent housing at Naomi s Way, New Brunswick, NJ. The completion of the Naomi s Way project brings the total number of affordable housing units operated by Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen to. 91

6 Supportive Services at Kilmer Homes Kilmer Homes is 120 units of affordable housing located in Edison Township, NJ. It includes 30 units that are designated for households who were previously homeless. Catholic Charities provides flexible services to families residing at Kilmer Homes. Through access to these services, families are supported and empowered to make strong lasting connections in their community. Access to affordable housing has far reaching benefits, including a decrease in the number of families who experience food insecurity, emotional distress, and alcohol and drug abuse. Keeping Families Together through statewide program expansion As part of an expansion of the state s permanent supportive housing program Keeping Families Together (KFT), Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen provides supportive housing to 50 families in Middlesex County. KFT is designed specifically for child welfare involved families struggling with homelessness and other challenges. The goal of this expansion is to keep families together, keep children safe, prevent foster care placement, and reduce homelessness - all core values of the mission of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen. Through partnerships, supportive services and program expansion, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen continues to make a significant impact for families faced with meeting the challenge of the affordable housing crisis.

7 We are known for Counseling Services For people struggling with depression, anxiety or the challenging issues of everyday life, Catholic Charities' team of licensed and Masters level clinicians provide Outpatient Counseling for children, teens, adults, couples and families. Our certified and licensed addiction counselors help people who are battling addiction to recover, achieve wellness and regain control over their lives. For people in the community with serious and persistent mental illness, Catholic Charities' PACT (Program of Assertive Community Treatment) teams provide services to promote self-management of symptoms, prevent unnecessary psychiatric hospitalizations and maximize independence and community integration. "I'm not perfect, but I am better than yesterday." "I have been a PACT consumer at Catholic Charities for almost two years now. I struggled with severe hoarding and was living in very poor conditions. I was isolated and lonely. I was dependent upon others for many of my needs and was at a low point in my life. Through my experience with PACT, I have found confidence in myself and my abilities. Catholic Charities helped me with so many things - my basic needs, my medication, even arranging for vendors to help me with home repairs. Today, I am on track. I am coping. I can identify my symptoms and know what to do when I experience them. I work on organizing my home, attend the senior center, make my own appointments and arrange my own transportation. I am much more positive and hopeful. I am not perfect, but I am better than yesterday." Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen provided more than 40,000 hours of counseling in FY 2017.

8 Continued Commitment to meeting Basic Needs "I was terrified and wanted to turn around. I had never asked for help before. I was a successful person. I kept asking myself, 'How did I end up here?' I was embarrassed and ashamed. Catholic Charities did not judge me, and when I walked out, I didn t feel like less of a person." Forty-one million people struggle with hunger in the United States, including 13 million children. In fact, 115,520 people may go to bed hungry tonight, right here in the Diocese of Metuchen ( Catholic Charities remains committed to helping people meet their basic needs. In FY 2017, the Catholic Charities food pantry, the largest in Warren County, responded to 11,519 requests for food and clothing. Over twenty programs operated by Catholic Charities are dedicated to helping the poor and vulnerable make ends meet. When people's basic needs are met, they are better able to face their other daily struggles - sustaining housing, paying rent, pursuing jobs and completing education. 115,520 people may go to bed hungry tonight in the Diocese of Metuchen.
