1 NEWSLET TER Macomb County Office of Substance Abuse Hall Rd., Clinton Township, MI (586) (586) FAX SPECIAL NEWSLETTER EDITION Prevention and Treatment Provider Overview Fall 2011 CELEBRATE RECOVERY WALK AND RALLY HELD IN LANSING, SEPTEMBER 13, 2011 The Celebrate Recovery walk and rally commemorates the successes of those recovering from alcoholism and other addictions. This includes individuals in recovery, their family members and friends, addiction treatment professionals and others in support of recovery. This year the event took place on Sept. 13 in Lansing. Over 2,000 participants gathered at Lansing s Louis Adado Park and marched to the steps of the State Capitol, to hear Jeff Jay, Interventionist, and Michael Johnson, SUD clinician, share their experiences with addiction a combined 60+ years of recovery. It was a celebratory event that clearly carried the message of hope for those seeking or struggling with their addiction from alcohol or other drugs. The walk and rally helps to create a public awareness regarding alcoholism and other drug addictions. Intended messages include alcoholism/addiction is a disease, many people can and do recover, and that individuals don t cause or choose their addictions due to moral failures, or personal defects. These and similar messages are promoted by Greater Macomb Project VOX. Project VOX is a grassroots collaborative comprised of individuals in recovery, their family members, friends, supporters and other allies. Greater Macomb Project VOX seeks to honor, support, celebrate and promote the positive experience of recovery and to overcome the stigma of addiction. The organization strives to accomplish this through recovery promotion, public awareness, education and advocacy. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. (dinner is provided). OCT IS NATIONAL RED RIBBON WEEK Red Ribbon Week is an ideal way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against substance abuse. The Red Ribbon Campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in This began the continuing tradition of displaying Red Ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs. The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a DRUG- FREE AMERICA. GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT NOV. 17 The American Cancer Society is marking the 36th Great American Smokeout on November 17 by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By doing so, smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life one that can lead to reducing cancer risk. Quitting smoking is not easy, but it can be done. To have the best chance of quitting successfully, you need to know what you're up against, what your options are, and where to go for help. 4 Fall 2011 Page 4 Please note: This edition of the newsletter is dedicated to sharing information about MCOSA s continuum of Care. This includes brief descriptions of services delivered by each provider under contract with MCOSA. Each program must be licensed, accredited through a nationally recognized accreditation organization, comply with staff credentialing expectations, and other requirements issued by MPDH/ BSAAS, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. An emphasis is also placed on services based on Evidence Based Practices. A GUIDE TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION SERVICES IN MACOMB COUNTY Prevention programming is intended to prevent and/or delay the onset of, and reduce the consequences and progression of substance use disorders. MCOSA s prevention planning goals require that service providers use a data driven process to identify and serve Macomb County Residents. MCOSA funds providers to focus in four primary areas: Reduce Childhood and Underage Drinking Reduce Prescription and Over the Counter Drug Abuse/Misuse Reduce Youth Access to Tobacco Reduce Illicit Drug Use The following service providers have been approved to provide prevention programs in Macomb County. Alcohol Highway Safety Program offers educational presentations to students primarily at the middle and high school grade levels to increase awareness of the inherent danger of combining alcohol and driving. In addition, they offer the Protecting You/Protecting Me curriculum that focuses on issues surrounding alcohol. For more information, please call Chris Lineberger at Community Assessment, Referral & Education (CARE) - provides a variety of prevention services, including public information and community presentations for schools, churches, and community groups. They also provide consultation and technical assistance to coalitions, a variety of parenting skills training, activities directed to prevent Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and peer-based activities to decrease youth access to tobacco. Some programs offered by CARE are Life Skills, Project Alert, Anger Management, Young Women s Lives, and Teen Intervene. For more information, please call Kevin Friedrich at (586) , or visit CARE s website at Clinton Counseling Center Jail Substance Abuse Program This program provides educational and outpatient treatment services to substance use related offenders incarcerated at the Macomb County Jail. The substance abuse program also conducts HIV/ AIDS information sessions. The Jail program structure consists of a track system, consisting of two independent services, prevention and treatment. Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous groups are available to inmates of the jail and are coordinated by Clinton Counseling Center staff. For more information, please call Sue DeMara at (586) Macomb Family Services Romeo Site Prevention activities include a variety of prevention services including educational presentations, consultation and technical assistance to coalitions, schools, parents and community groups. Teens referred by courts and school districts attend the Choices educational program to learn about alcohol, tobacco and other drug problems. Other programs offered by Macomb Family Services include Project Alert, Navigating Teen Years, Project Toward No Drug Use, Life Skills, Too Good for Drugs and Violence and Protecting You/Protecting Me. 5 Fall 2011 Page 5 SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT SERVICES MCOSA is responsible for subcontracting with licensed substance abuse community agencies to provide a continuum of substance use disorder treatment services to Macomb County residents. The following providers have been approved to provide substance use disorder treatment. For more information visit our website at Bio Medical Behavioral Healthcare, PC Located in Clinton Township. Bio Med is a licensed Methadone outpatient drug treatment and counseling clinic. The clinic provides Methadone detoxification and maintenance in an outpatient treatment setting to Macomb County residents addicted to opiates as authorized by the AMS. Individual, group and family counseling is provided. Community Assessment, Referral & Education (CARE) - Located in Fraser. CARE provides substance abuse screening, referral and care management in compliance with the State requirements for an Access Management System (AMS). CARE also provides care management and follow up services to high risk women, priority population clients and clients receiving intensive services. Case Management services are provided to pregnant clients, women with dependent children, and clients receiving methadone treatment who require assistance in meeting their recovery goals. The Substance Abuse Support Services are targeted to Macomb County parents whose children are placed out of home due to substance use related child abuse or neglect. These services are conducted by designated CARE case managers who provide in home and community based support services. Clinton Counseling Center Located in Mt. Clemens. Clinton Counseling Center, a program of Comprehensive Youth Services, Inc. offers both outpatient and intensive outpatient treatment services to individuals and families experiencing problems with substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders. In addition to traditional outpatient services, a six-week intensive outpatient treatment program for adults is provided when authorized by AMS. Community Programs Inc. (CPI) Located in Waterford. Provides residential treatment services for men and women. Community Programs, Inc. also has a 15 bed sub-acute detoxification unit. Eastwood Clinics Has locations throughout four counties in southeast Michigan that provides outpatient services to adults and children through Eastpointe and Clinton Township locations. The Eastpointe location also provides intensive outpatient services to adults through a five week program. The Eastwood Residential Program located in Royal Oak, provides short-term residential services to adult males. Kairos Healthcare Located in Bridgeport near Saginaw. Kairos Healthcare provides short-term residential services to Macomb County residents referred and authorized by the AMS. Kairos also provides a medically managed subacute detoxification services up to five days in length. Kairos also provides integrated treatment strategies for those suffering from co-occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues. Aftercare referrals to Macomb County resources are arranged in consultation with the AMS. (Substance Abuse Treatment Centers, continued on page 6)
6 Fall 2011 Page 6 SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT SERVICES IN MACOMB COUNTY (continued) Macomb Family Services Located in Romeo, with a second office in Richmond. Provides outpatient substance use disorder services to youth, adults, and families in northern Macomb County. Early intervention services are provided to adolescents in northern school districts and Fraser High School through outreach counselors. Youth meeting eligibility guidelines receive short term counseling services at the school location. Pioneer Counseling Center Operates two outpatient centers in Macomb County. Pioneer provides outpatient and intensive outpatient substance abuse services through the Sterling Heights location. Traditional outpatient services are provided to both adults and children experiencing substance use problems which include group, individual, didactic, family and cooccurring treatment services. Readiness Groups Pioneer Counseling also offers readiness group services to clients waiting for residential treatment. The Pre-Placement Wellness Group is an open ended and free standing educational process group that provides support to improve clients readiness to change and engage in the first steps towards recovery. Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center Located in Memphis is a 95 bed facility that provides sub -acute detoxification and residential services. Specialized Residential Services for pregnant women, mothers and their children are provided through Clearview Residential Treatment Center located in Port Huron. Traditional outpatient and aftercare services are provided to adolescents and adults from Sacred Heart clinics located in Warren and New Haven. Sacred Heart is also state licensed to provide methadone outpatient treatment at the Memphis and Madison Heights locations. Peer Recovery Support Services is also provided by Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center as a demonstration project. This project offers Peer Recovery Coach services to individuals with a history of recidivism, to sustain recovery. Turning Point Recovery Centers Located in Oakland County. Short-term and long-term residential services for adult men and women are delivered at its Pontiac location. Medical and psychiatric services are provided through contract physicians as necessary. Prior to discharge, an aftercare plan is developed and referrals to local resources for continued treatment is arranged in consultation with the AMS. Michigan Rehabilitation Services Collaborates with MCOSA and CARE to provide services for individuals with substance abuse disorders who are actively working with Michigan Rehabilitation Services. MRS provides vocational preparation support groups, employee retention support and additional drug screens for substance abuse treatment individuals. Children s Specialty Waiver Wrap-Around Services in collaboration with Macomb County Community Mental Health, Macomb County Department of Human Services, Macomb Intermediate School District and Macomb County Juvenile Court, this joint effort will provide ancillary services that are not otherwise funded. The targeted population is at-risk youth experiencing serious emotional disturbance and substance abuse problems.

Margaret Mead, Anthropologist MCOSA actively supports and recognizes the importance of local coalitions in providing grassroots efforts that are unique to each community. We believe that in order to be effective in reducing substance abuse issues, a comprehensive plan must include professionals as well as local individuals to problem-solve, network, and develop strategies. Therefore we encourage individuals to join their local anti-drug coalition and help create safe drug-free communities. 9 Fall 2011 Page 9 In keeping with the requirements of Public Act 368 of 1978, the Macomb County Community Mental Health Office of Substance Abuse request community comment on new and renewal substance abuse license applications. Any individual or organization who offers or purports to offer, substance abuse prevention or treatment services and charges for those services must be licensed through the Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services, unless they are already licensed in certain specific disciplines. Opportunities to comment on license applications are provided through the local Coordinating Agency (Macomb County Community Mental Health Office of Substance Abuse) and its Advisory Council.
