1 According to a recent study by AGV Technologies, 52% of children think their parents use their cell phones too much and 32% felt unimportant when their parents used their phones during meal times, conversations, and while playing outside together. This is a concern because children s social and emotional skills are developing in the first five years of life and parents are a child s first role model. Social and emotional skills help children to make friends, get along with others and control their emotions. Frequent interaction is a way to build social and emotional well-being. Some easy tips include talking to your baby every day, read together, cuddle often, write stories together as they get older, play outside and leave your cell phone in the house, engage in active listening by making eye contact and asking openended questions, and talk about what you see and how you feel. Reflective listening is a great way to let children of all ages know that their feelings are being heard and understood. This skill not only creates an atmosphere of safety and mutual respect but it s key to helping children develop social and emotional skills. Raising teenagers in this age of technology can be challenging. Teenagers also need our attention. It is important to model responsible use of technology, and balance its use with social interaction. Teens need to know their feelings are being heard and understood. They face so many challenges and temptations during this time and need a safe place to discuss their feelings and receive guidance. Research has shown that one s attention on a visual task can render them oblivious to activities going on around them. In one study, participants were asked to watch a video of a group passing a basketball back and forth and count the number of passes. The counters were so busy performing that task that they missed a person dressed like a gorilla, beating his chest, walking through the group of basketball players. 2 games at the new ballpark in Utica. Greater Macomb Project Vox is an active participant in the National Celebrate Recovery March and Rally. Held each September, Celebrate Recovery events are staged around the country, bringing together an estimated 70,000 people. The March and Rally will be held on September 10th, 2016 at Belle Isle. Greater Macomb Project Vox is a grassroots collaborative comprised of individuals in recovery, their family members, friends, supporters and other allies. Greater Macomb Project Vox seeks to honor, support, celebrate and promote the positive experience of recovery and to overcome the stigma of addiction. The organization strives to accomplish this through recovery promotion, public awareness, education and advocacy. The mission of Greater Macomb Project Vox is to unify the voice of the recovery community in order to reshape public attitudes and eliminate the discrimination towards individuals who are living with an addiction to alcohol or other drugs. Greater Macomb Project Vox envisions a community where it is recognized that it is possible to live a life in long term recovery, and where full access to treatment and resources are available. We are in the process of planning several sober events that include; an afternoon of bowling fun for the family, an art show exhibiting the artwork of those in recovery, a health and wellness fair on July 18th, conducting messaging training to learn how to effectively speak about recovery, and attending ball Paper People is an early childhood lifeskills program to promote physically and emotionally healthy children between the ages of three and eight years old. The program includes eight 30 minute sessions that can be held in your school or community location.
