3 FALL 2012 Page 3 Service Providers Program Note: MCOSA s newsletter will now include brief outlines of various service provider programs under contract with MCOSA. We hope this information will increase awareness of resources available to Macomb County residents. Kairos Healthcare Young Adult Residential Substance Abuse Treatment The primary goal of the Young Adult Residential Substance Abuse Treatment program is to provide targeted, systematic approaches to help young adults recover from substance use disorders and cooccurring mental health problems. The transition from adolescence to adulthood is a time when individuals assume new social roles and form new identities that provide the foundation for later life; all of which is compromised through substance use disorders. Comprehensive programming simultaneously addresses mental health and substance use problems as well as medical, education, and employment concerns. Kairos utilizes a concept based therapeutic community which provides the behavioral structure to increase opportunities for clients to benefit from experimental application of social skills, morality and principled behavior. Cognitive/ behavioral techniques designed to help young adults identify learned behaviors that support their unhealthy behavior and use patterns are a central theme of it s therapeutic model of care. Kairos Healthcare is located at 3400 S. Washington, Saginaw, MI Phone: (989) Turning Point Recovery Centers Short-term and Long-term Residential Services Turning Point Recovery Centers offers short-term and long-term residential services for adult men and women at their Pontiac location. The short-term program is designed for up to 21 days and includes individual counseling, recovery education, group counseling, co-occurring treatment and recreational activities. The long-term program allows individuals more opportunity to learn and apply recovery maintenance skills at a slower pace during the 45 day stay. Medical and psychiatric services are provided through physicians as necessary. Prior to discharge, an aftercare plan is developed and referrals to local resources for continued treatment are arranged. Turning Point is located at 54 Seneca Street, Pontiac MI Phone: NEW AT MCOSA s RESOURCE CENTER SEEKING SAFETY: A Treatment Manual for PTSD and Substance Abuse & Training DVD s The manual is divided into 25 specific units addressing a range of different cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal domains. Each topic provides highly practical tools and techniques to engage patients in treatment; teach safe coping skills that apply to both disorders; and restores ideals that have been lost, including respect, care, protection, and healing. This manual was published in 2002 [401 pages.] If you have any questions, or would like to reserve any materials, please call MCOSA at (586)

4 FALL 2012 Page 4 Drug Take Back in Macomb County Nets 1,053 lbs. of prescription medication! Thanks to Macomb C o u n t y A n t i - D r u g C o a l i t i o n s, p o l i c e departments, and news outlets who helped make the September Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Take Back effort a success. According to the Roseville s Drug Take Back DEA, the Macomb County locat ions c o l lect e d approximately 1053 pounds of unused and expired prescription medications! Many residents dropped off their old medications so they could be destroyed in a safe manner. By removing these medications from circulation we hope to spread awareness on the rapidly rising trend of prescription drug diversion and abuse. This is a real public health concern and one in which we can all help by reducing availability in our communities. Macomb Prevention Network and MCOSA would like the public to know that Macomb County has several Police Departments that have permanent disposal boxes available 365 days per year. Therefore there is no need to wait for the next DEA event to safely dispose of expired or unused prescriptions. Locations of permanent boxes: Macomb County Sheriff Department Fraser Police Department Clinton Township Police Department Richmond Police Department Sterling Heights Police Department Shelby Township Police Department Warren Police Department Citizens: GET INVOVLED and make a difference in your community by joining a local anti-drug coalition. Visit Macomb_Coalition_List.asp for a list of coalitions. Macomb Prevention Coalition Youths Receive Award From Prosecutor s Office The Macomb County Prosecuting Attorney s Office recently honored students for being involved in their community prevention coalitions. Prosecutor Smith noted that the recipients are brave leaders that are willing to work on issues that impact the community, such as substance abuse. If you are interested in joining your local coalition, go to the MCOSA website ( click on Prevention, then click on Coalitions/Community Groups in Macomb County List. 6 FALL 2012 Page 6 Do Your Part PSA The "Do Your Part" video features five new public service announcements, highlighting individuals who share how they are doing their part to prevent underage drinking, and inviting other adults to "Do Your Part." Segments of the video are available for free distribution as 30 second Public Service Announcements (PSAs). This video was produced through collaboration with the federal Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) Underage Drinking Prevention Education Initiatives (UADPEI). To watch any of the videos full-screen (useful when projecting for audience viewing), go to the MDCH YouTube Channel. Thanks for Asking Cigarettes are the only legal product sold that, when used as directed, kill the customer. Unfortunately, this knowledge is not enough to keep millions of people from lighting up each day. Once addicted to the nicotine in tobacco, it is extremely difficult to stop. Because quitting smoking is so hard, it makes not starting that much more critical. Sadly, almost 2,000 teenagers pick up the addiction every single day of the year. A third of these kids will eventually die from a tobacco-related illness. If these teens reach 19 years old without smoking, it is highly unlikely they will ever become nicotine addicted. Why do kids pick up that first cigarette? The reasons are multiple and many are complex. But, there are several actions adults can take to lessen the odds of teenage addiction to nicotine. A vital first step is to prevent tobacco sales to minors. In 1995, more than 80% of Macomb county retail establishments tested in a tobacco compliance check sold cigarettes to minors without asking for identification to check age. In 2012, as a result of a sixteen-year effort to educate retailers about the importance of keeping children tobacco free, Macomb County has reduced the sales to minors to 12%. What can you do to help keep young people on a tobacco free path? Be vocal when you see a clerk ask for identification if a young person attempts to buy cigarettes. By telling the clerk, thanks for asking! you are supporting the clerk s efforts to follow the law. More importantly, you are joining the many Macomb citizens who care about providing a healthy environment for young people. And please never buy tobacco for an underage person. It is both illegal and wrong. October 23-31, 2012 is Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Weeks an ideal way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against substance abuse. The Red Ribbon Campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in This began the continuing tradition of displaying Red Ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs. The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a DRUG-FREE AMERICA. Today the Red Ribbon Campaign symbolizes support for the DEA s efforts to reduce demand for drugs through prevention ad education programs. It also represents the ultimate sacrifice one man made in believing he could make a difference. Great American Smokeout November 15, 2012 The American Cancer Society is marking the 37th Great American Smokeout on November 15 by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By doing so, smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life one that can lead to reducing cancer risk. Quitting smoking is not easy, but it can be done. To have the best chance of quitting successfully, you need to know what you're up against, what your options are, and where to go for help. The Michigan Tobacco Quitline offers free telephone coaching to help quit smoking. Call QUIT-NOW ( ) for more information.
