I think you're confusing primary and secondary prevention with universal and selected interventions. Go to click on prevention, click on "online prevention toolkit" and click on "empowerment evaluation toolkit" Prevention Institute: Understanding Evidence: Role modeling changing social norms a greater sense of accountability i think you have to see change coming from your peers ownership of behaviors and actions Community ownership It may not prevent it in the short term, but in the long term leadership development - developing leaders who promote healthy relationships may lead to prevention leadership is building expertise, point people, local experts can involve the whole community identifying leadership in peer groups and training them in changing social norms spreads to the rest of the peer group, as well as training in bystander intervention Mobilizing communities has the potential for movement building. It is a work in process for us and our programs. In the case of a dv shelter can mean the difference between life and death. 6 It is one week, but the staff of BWIC continue to meet monthly to engage the youth in on-going community action and social justice. Christine, you & BWIC rock!!! Young people are very honest. how would we get parents to allow their youth to go if they don't get it themselves? I'd like to add that we really are open to feedback from the youth each and every day at camp. We've often changed the activities overnight. Having youth facilitators and looking each day for opportunities to provide youth campers with leadership opportunities is essential. I'm still sitting here absorbing the awesomeness of this program. I'm in intellectual shock. We're working on this in a similar but different way, and this really speaks to me. Love it In the monthly meetings with the youth, what social justice projects do they work on? also, what exactly is adultism, especially when the culture of the States is very much focused on worshipping the young? is it in terms of the premise that adults always know what they are talking about? that's the only way I could see that ism in practice. Officially it is defined as: Adultism the systematic exploitation, mistreatment, and abuse of young people by adults. Okay. That makes sense now. Thanks. you're welcome! Spread of engagement? Nicola - the youth choose. Sometimes it is how to start a GSA in their school, the conference Christine mentioned was one, community rallies are another... It sounds like adultism would encompass all the other isms. Does it make sense to break it out that way? Christine Gilfillan: Thanks, Denise!
