1 February 2016 MEETING INFO Meeting was run by President Ed N1KGN In attendance were Brett KB1YIW Connie KB1UJX Don KB1UZQ Ken NE1CU Kevin N1KGM Larry AB1JC Larry-W1LAG Marianne AB1RK Marilyn KB1YYO Mike KA1EOU Pat KB1UJY A Treasurer's report was given by Treasurer Connie KB1UJX. (Details not discussed in this newsletter). The Secretary's Report was given by Secretary Marianne AB1RK. (Details not discussed in this newsletter). WINTER STORM JONAS Winter Storm Jonas arrived the morning of January 23, 2016 dumping more than 15 inches of snow in the greater Bridgeport area over a 24 hour period. Thank you goes to all who assisted during this winter storm, especially Michael Wallace, Pat Ellis and Sandra Russell who served at the EOC from GBARC. WINTER FIELD DAY 2016 GBARC and the Housatonic Amateur Radio Club (HARC) operated Winter Field Day 2016 using the HARC call sign N1KT from the Recreation Center in Shelton. We operated 6 stations and logged contacts using a computer network with N3FJP WFD software. As you know, SPAR has given up the sponsorship of Winter Field Day due to 1

2 many reasons, but mostly health issues of its members. The new Winter Field Day Association has taken over for this year, gladly taking the work, advertising and overall management of the contest. Their new site is Additionally, the rules have changed slightly this year, as they have made the contest exchange closer to Summer Field Day, eliminating the local outside temperature and adding the ARRL section. This was to decrease confusion among non-contest participants. This has caused some consternation for some in our group, who have come to believe that exchanging the outside temperature was the most endearing part of the contest. But that's progress and with that GBARC and the Housatonic ARC using their call sign N1KT made 246 contacts with 18 multipliers and 1500 bonus points. We scored 5928 points total. Below are some pictures from WFD at the East Village Rec. Center. Gary WE1M & Larry W1LAG Larry AB1JC and Dave KB1LTW unload the beam 5 Band Beam in the air 80 meter dipole 2

4 John W1JON, Andrew KC1ETJ, Larry AB1JC, Dave KB1LTW and Ned KA1CVV Thanks go out to AB1JC for securing the reservation for the facility, GBARC for paying the use fee, WD1M for operating CW, producing multipliers and cooking breakfast, HARC for allowing the use of their call sign N1KT and everyone who helped with this contest. A special 88 go out to the XYLs who prepared things at home and brought them to the site. The following hams participated: AB1JC, KA1CVV, KA1EOU, KA1SHN, KB1LTW, KB1YIW, KC1EJT, NE1CU, WD1M, WE1M, W1LAG, and W1JON. Regrets if I forgot anyone. QSL N1KT via WE1M, buro, or eqsl. Tnx. BALLOON It was reported at the meeting that Univ. of Bridgeport is sending up a large payload on a balloon scheduled for launch in September. The launch will take place in Arizona with hopes of reaching 150,000 feet. The Discovery Museum is playing a part in it too with GBARC member Larry AB1JC as chief consultant. Congrats Larry! More info as it becomes available. 4
