Hello again SD FBLA! We had so much fun at Fall Leadership Conference this past month with all of you, and we are already preparing for the upcoming Officer Leadership Institute in Aberdeen in December. We have many fun and interactive workshops prepared for you and cannot wait to share officer tips, tricks, and FBLA knowledge with everyone! See you all again soon! 2 Members across the state gain networking skills at Fall Leadership Conference By Sadie Vander Wal South Dakota FBLA members engaged in networking and team-building activities at the 2017 Fall Leadership Conference held in Sioux Falls on October 23. Filled with energizing activities and discussions, members had the ability to not only build upon their personal leadership and teamwork abilities, but they could also connect with other members from across the state as everyone paired up with a new person throughout the day to gain those vital networks. Overall, members had the chance to experience how their leadership within their own chapters and communication with other people can truly have an impact. As a whole, South Dakota FBLA gears students to not only believe in themselves but encourages members to achieve their goals through skills that FBLA has developed within them. As FLC closed with the official meeting of business, members also had the opportunity to see how business functions on the state level within the officer team. Explanation of the program of work and other matters showed members some of the state officers responsibilities, as some members sitting in the audience may be on stage conducting the meeting next year. 3 Hello members and advisors! Another month has come and gone since we last spoke, and along with the month of October was FLC! I truly had such a great time spending the day with many of you and growing together as future leaders! It was amazing to see how quickly our presenter could get us to open up whether it be acting as dinosaurs or giving a quick impromptu speech. I am truly excited to see where these newly acquired skills can take us through the rest of this year and the rest of our lives. Now that we have passed FLC, my brain can fully focus on OLI. I am very excited that OLI will be hosted close to my hometown this year in Aberdeen. The state officers and I are all busy coordinating our own personal officer positions as well as workshops that we will present together. The workshops will include tips on running for state office, parliamentary procedure, social media, and many other exciting activities! We all look forward to working with the officers of your chapter and cannot wait to help you with whatever you might need! As far as the Program of Work goes, I have sent each of the officers their chapter assignments and they should be well on their way to reaching out to the members and advisors of those schools. For my interesting fact this month I want to share that I have lived in the same house my entire life. In 2005 we added on a new addition to our home, but I have never had to move houses. That being said, I have also gone to Leola School my entire life and plan to graduate from there in May! I hope everyone enjoys November and I challenge each of you continue to work hard on the goals you may have set at the beginning of this year. See you all very soon! Your President, Grace Wolff Hello, once again! This past month has kept me busy for sure. Towards the beginning of the month, we had a meeting to prepare for Fall Leadership Conference (FLC). The conference itself went quite well, as expected, and I believe everyone had a good time. We also had two officers that were not able to stay for the final meeting at the end of the conference, so another officer and I had to take over reading their reports during the meeting (which made it a bit more interesting on my part). Also during this month, we reached out to our assigned school. Each officer is assigned two to three schools with which we are to keep in contact and possibly attend any meetings, should they desire. I contacted Parkston and Canistota and I think it all should go well! Finally, I ll conclude that the social media accounts have been continuing along well. 4 To open up my report, I d like to thank everyone who came and participated at FLC. I hope you all had an amazing time thanks to our fun FOCUS speaker. It was also great to have the DECA officers join us during our conference. Sitting at a table with them was very informative as I was able to learn more about their organization as well as having the opportunity to promote my own. This month I d like to talk about an event my local chapter holds every year in November. Caring Rose Week is the week preceding National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. This week gives light to the sad, but very real truth that some people do not spend Thanksgiving the way some of us do. With the holidays just around the corner, celebrating Caring Rose Week with your local communities and chapters can help the less fortunate. 2+10=12 The 19th Annual Caring Rose Week will take place November 6-12, Their slogan is 2+10=12. If you donate 2 cans of food for the hungry, you receive a dozen roses for only $10. How it works: First, team up with your local flower shop to see if they would be interested in participating in Caring Rose Week Schedule times and places where you will sell the roses/collect the canned food Make sure customers receive their flowers if they need to be delivered Donate the canned food to your local food pantry and help make someone s Thanksgiving a memorable one (Caring Rose Week is also a great idea for a community service project) One last reminder that OLI is coming up soon on December 6. I encourage local officers to come participate so you can learn about your role as an FBLA officer, and how to work towards the betterment of your chapter. 5 The month of spooks has arrived! Ghosts, monsters and other frightening things (like applying for scholarships) are looming. On the bright side this is the season of rapidly approaching holidays. First there's Halloween, then pre-christmas, then Thanksgiving, then it s basically Christmas from November 24th through January 3rd. And that s just the bare minimum. The biggest downside is travel will certainly be limited but not for OLI! OLI will be held at Presentation College in Aberdeen and will be a fun learning experience for all local officers to participate in. There will be various workshops pertaining to a specific office that local officers can attend. It can be a good experience if you currently hold one position but are looking to run for a different one next year. It can also be a wonderful opportunity to gain some insight and information if you are considering running for state office! There will be many chances to ask all the state officers any tips and tricks for preparing a campaign and we would certainly be happy to answer all questions! Stay spooky, see you in Aberdeen. Unfortunately, winter is quickly approaching. November has always been a weird month. It s not really fall because almost all of the leaves have fallen. But it s not really winter either because there isn t much snow (or many Christmas lights). But November is for sure the month of giving thanks and showing gratitude. I encourage all of you to think of your FBLA advisors this Thanksgiving season. Our advisors sacrifice so much time and effort to help you succeed and have fun. They deserve to know that they are impacting your future! I especially look forward to participating in Pierre s annual Parade of Lights this month. Every year our FBLA chapter gets together and creates a float for the parade. We have always had so much fun doing this activity. It is a great way to get into the festive season. There is no better way to bond with other FBLA members than snuggling to keep warm in the below freezing weather. I encourage your chapter to look for creative ways to get involved in your community and school, even though the weather is not so appealing. Volunteering at a local food bank or helping tutor at your school are great ways to spread the word about FBLA!!! I hope to see all the local officers at our OLI meeting in December. It is a great way for local officers to learn from state officers on how to be a better leader back home. Also, if you are even slightly considering running for a state office, please come to OLI! We will inform you on everything you need to know. You ll learn how rewarding the experience truly is. Have a great month, I ll see you in December! Hello South Dakota FBLA, another month flew by again! This month the state officer team went to the Fall Leadership Conference, in Sioux Falls. There we listened to a speaker talk to us about many things. We learned about proper etiquette, markets/ money and giving impromptu speeches. I was able to meet many new people and made some new friends from Pierre, as I was able to sit at their table during the workshops. One of the workshops game was Evolution. This was a game of rock, paper, scissor. If you won you would progress to become a chicken and so on. I was not able to attend the state officer meeting after the workshop because I had to leave early to get back to my volleyball game. Back at the local chapter we mailed out the American Enterprise letters of appreciation to each of the businesses that participated in our spirit card program. The American Enterprise day is on November 15 and is a way to allow small businesses operate without the government interfering. Parliamentarian Tips and Tricks #3 Before a member can make a motion or address the assembly in is necessary to obtain the floor. You can address the president by saying, Mr. Chairman, Mr. President, or Mr. Moderator. Then the president should acknowledge the person and allow them to make their motion. November 2017 Page 5

6 Hello everyone! October seemed to fly by! I hope everyone had a great time at Fall Leadership Conference, and I thank you all for attending. I hope that you all were able to bring back the great things that you learned from the conference, and that you gained networking through the conference. As I said earlier, the month of October seemed to fly by, and so will the rest of the year! Please remember to get pictures into me for the scrapbook and slideshow! Officer Leadership Institute is right around the corner, and we are working hard to put together a fun learning experience for all of the officers in the chapters. When I attended OLI last year as an officer from our Leola FBLA Chapter, I enjoyed it a lot and learned a lot of new skills through the workshops that were put on. This year, I know that if you attend, you will be able to take something you learned back to your chapter and apply it to the position that you are representing. I am very excited to get the opportunity to meet up with the historians from every chapter and discuss historian duties! I hope that you all had a great Halloween and October as a whole. Please plan to attend OLI with us state officers in December. I hope to see you all there! Hello again! It was such a joy to meet and talk with so many members at Fall Leadership Conference this past month! As we gear up for OLI in the next month, we hope to see many of you there again. For all chapter reporters, I hope to see you at my workshop where I will go over some of the basics of being a reporter, as well as help you with any questions you may have about FBLA! The state officer team will be holding a t-shirt design competition once again for this year s spring leadership conference. Once a design has been selected, t-shirts will be produced by NW Ink at Northwestern High School in Mellette. Members are encouraged to enter the competition for the chance for their design to be featured on all SLC shirts. Requirements include Elevate Your Future theme and South Dakota FBLA Spring Leadership Conference Designs are due to Sadie at SV3077@k12.sd.us by February 1st, As always, please send me reports about what your chapter is up to! I would love to feature chapters in the upcoming newsletters, even if it is simply pictures of what your chapter has done these first couple months of school. Keep in mind, the member who sends the most high-quality reports to me this year will have the chance to win the newsletter award at SLC in April. Here are a few tricks to writing a quick report about your chapter for use here in the newsletter, on your school website, or even a local newspaper: 1. Keep it simple. Follow the five W s of journalism to form your topic sentence: Who, What, Where, When, and Why. 2. Include pictures! Caption pictures of what your chapter members are pictured doing, and focus your report on that! 3. Focus on a chapter project or event. Don t know what to write about? Pick a fun project that your chapter has recently completed, such as a community service or fundraiser that you would like to share with the rest of the state. We would love to hear about it!
