5 SUBSTANCE USE-THE EARLY DAYS 1956-American Medical Association recognized alcoholism as a disease STILL 2018-Some people consider addiction a moral flaw, weakness, laziness, etc.

6 EARLY SUPPORT DEVELOPED Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) formed Al-Anon formed Early 1980 s- Children of Alcoholics (COA) formed Other 12 step support groups: NA, OA, Ala-Teen, SA, etc.

15 RECOVERY COACHING Studies [of peer recovery support for individuals with substance use disorders] demonstrate improved relationships with providers and social supports, increased satisfaction with the treatment experience overall, reduced rates of relapse, and increased retention in treatment. It is clear that peer support services can provide a valuable approach to guiding consumers as they strive to achieve and maintain recovery. (Rief, et al, 2014)
