1 Minutes: 6 June /06/ :38 White Horse Medical Practice Patient Participation Group MINUTES Date: 6 June 2017 Place: White Horse Medical Practice, Faringdon Attending: (Chair) Graham Hall Dr Rob Russ Beaney urn (Minutes) Prospective member: Richard May Apologies: Jo Morgan, Webb Item 1 Action Minutes The Minutes of the meeting on 7 March 2017, as updated by the Chairman, were approved and signed. David said he will now circulate the Minutes exclusively in pdf format to suit tablet users and to minimise overlapping versions. 2 Prospective members and were welcomed as full members of the Faringdon PPG. Graham introduced Richard May of Great Coxwell who is considering joining the group. Richard is on the village Parish Council and is a retired logistics and systems specialist. 3 Matters arising from previous meeting NAPP Bulletin. Douglas asked again whether there was value in his summarising the monthly NAPP Bulletins. It was agreed that, as all members including the Practice receive the Bulletin, they should forward any topics they d like discussed to Graham for raising at the next meeting. 4 All Practice matters 1. Building. The current phase of alterations is nearly complete with: An enlarged Dispensary plus a dosset box preparation area. Three new consulting rooms with a further one to be completed shortly. Fernhill reception area changed into storage and a consulting room. A new phlebotomy room. said that they want to recognise the contribution made over the years by David and Margo Manning, and there may be a formal opening of the refurbishments in September. 2 4 The check-in screen will be moved to the lobby and a second announcement screen added to the nurse appointment waiting room. Redecorating continues. Rob confirmed that the Practice can do minor skin operations as long as they are not malignant. The Practice now has adequate facilities and staff to provide for the anticipated 16,000 patients likely by end Rob said he knows of no plans for any new surgeries to be built within the Faringdon/Shrivenham area, despite the numbers of new homes due. Provision for the expansion of KBS is a concern. 2. Staff. Dr Lawrence retires shortly and Dr Victoria Glover, from Lechlade, will join the Practice. 3. Local Investment Scheme. Rob said that Anne Lancaster has been very active in pursuing Section 106 monies and there are hopes of getting a contribution from the Uffington housing development. 4. Clinical Pharmacist. said that this is not going ahead because the funding offered was too restrictive and the benefits are unconvincing. 5. Appointment system. and Rob said that the Practice is very pleased with the results of converting from pre-booking to same-day triage with fewer no-shows, greatly reduced lead times and improved clinical outcomes because of the shorter delays. The patient feedback has been mostly positive, including all members of the PPG, but there are still tweaks needed to sort some remaining issues particularly patients who refuse to phone in and turn up expecting immediate attention. urn said he was concerned that the online booking screens are now quite unsuitable for the phone-back triage. Rob agreed but said the NHS contract required them to have this facility and hoped a new format will meet today s need. It was agreed that urn will write a new Bulletin on the triage system when the latest adjustments are finalised. / 6. Website. said that Hattie is now checking the site three times a week but, with only 5 hits on a busy day, it is not worth major investment. Marcus pointed out that the Practice web site no longer had the WHMP telephone number on it. Rob thought that it was now on, but subsequently agreed that is not the case. Rob added that the site has been impressed by is sponsored by the website development company. 7. Bulletins. said that, although only one has been produced so far, they are seen as a useful resource. 8. Healthy Times. said the Practice was very pleased with the new format. urn suggested the new format would display better online at one screen per page. The Autumn issue will be published in early September to allow for publicising the October flu clinics. (Friday 8 September would suit urn as he is away for the rest of September.) 3 5 PPG Procedures Graham has reissued the text for comments. The meeting approved this and it can now be published on the PPG website. 6 Ed Vaizey meeting On the assumption that the incumbent will be re-elected on June 8 th, Graham will re-circulate Paul Eddy s comprehensive notes on preparing for the meeting. A planning session will be held at the Practice at 1930 on Tuesday 13 th June with Graham, Rob, Marcus, George and. Graham 7 Health Promotion This topic was prompted by last year s NAPP Conference. Rob said that it was the Practice s view that public health awareness campaigns did not deliver and the best place for this education was in the consulting or treatment room. 8 Petition to OCCG said he was willing to re-present the funding withdrawal petition again to the OCCG. Rob said that body included many different opinions so this could be useful. David G 9 Minor Eye Conditions Service Marcus said that he is a board member of the Ophthalmology Project Board for this recentlyintroduced service which has now had a very successful first year. Patients with eye problems can phone their participating local optician themselves no Practice referral is needed and will usually get an appointment within two days. Unfortunately Haine and Smith in Faringdon can only offer appointments on two days a fortnight so Faringdon residents should be advised that Witney or Wantage offer a full service. urn will include an update story in the Autumn newsletter. 10 Team updates 1. Dementia. Emily said the successful Faringdon Dementia group is now full with 25 members. The stall at the May town centre event proved valuable in generating local interest. 2. Pharmacies. Emily will provide an article on local pharmacies for the Autumn newsletter. Emily 3. NAPP Conference. Both Emily and Douglas have booked. will reimburse them. 4. SWOL meeting. s ed report was read out. The key points were: Jonathan Crawshaw has been elected to replace Julie Anderson There is a new CCG website A new programme management office will take on the savings taskforce s work Responses to the new Primary Care Framework are required by October 18 out of the county s 72 Practices have declared themselves as vulnerable Rob urged the PPG to keep an active presence at SWOL because of their influence in funding the Practice. 4 11 Press Release for PPG Awareness Week urn briefed the meeting on Richard McCrann s request for a news story from Faringdon in support of the upcoming PPG Awareness Week. Unfortunately he had rejected the supplied text because of perceived political references and the meeting agreed that David should speak to him the following day to see if a revised text could be agreed. If not, then the item will be withdrawn. (Unfortunately the revised text was rejected.) Marcus said that behind-the-scenes diplomacy with OUHT had worked well for him and Rob urged using the Ed Vaizey meeting as a way of putting pressure on NHS England which was where the fundamental funding issue lay. 12 Any other business 1. Prospective member. Richard May r.may@tesco.net said he would like to join the PPG. will provide name badges for our new members. 2. Lions Club Message in a bottle. Marcus referred to an article in the Folly on this excellent scheme. urn will feature it in the Autumn newsletter. 3. Self-purchase medications. Kaye-Frances asked about patients buying low value over-thecounter medicines. Rob said this was an excellent idea but that doctors are required to issue a prescription if asked. The medical record always notes the prescription even if the patient buys their own.
