1 LIONS of 5M8 NEWSLETTER JANUARY Palm readings: Hard to believe that another Mid-Winter is just around the corner. The format of this year s convention is a carbon copy of previous year conventions. No sense in changing what s been working in the past. Here s an update from last month s newsletter of highlights of what s in store content-wise. Saturday s first session (10:00-11:00) will be ID Gwen White s time to address the delegates, updating all on what s new and exciting up at LCI. The 11:05 to 11:45 session will be a panel type discussion, centering on Lions and veteran s issues. Issues to be covered include veterans and diabetes, PTSD, and how we as lions can understand and help with those and other mental, medical, and other physical problems. Represented on the panel will be Project New Hope, a VA volunteer and veteran s community organizer, and the Waconia (5M2) Lions, who recently organized a well-publicized and well-deserved Honor Flight taking a plane full of veterans to Washington D.C. The Waconia Lions will also be the featured speaker/program at the Saturday noon luncheon. The four Saturday afternoon sessions will feature two vision related sessions. KidSight will be one, the other will feature PDG Jim Mulroy (5M7). PDG Mulroy is organizing a Minnesota (MD5M) Lions Eyeglass Mission trip to Guatemala in march of I think this would be an exciting opportunity and project for our district to be involved in, one way or another, so I ve invited PDG Jim to let you all know what may lie ahead. One of the other two features will be on LCIF and Campaign 100. The other session will focus on women in Lions and the New Voices initiative. ID Gwen will be our Saturday evening banquet and awards night speaker. Her bio appears elsewhere in this newsletter. A few of us have heard her speak elsewhere. As for me, I truly believe you will enjoy listening to her stories. The open to all, ID social (cash bar) will start at 5:30 PM on Saturday evening, prior to the banquet. Please note there are no FORMAL DRESS events during this convention. And, for information you are really looking for, there are seven hospitality rooms registered as of this writing. If you haven t figured out by now, the theme for the convention is tropical in nature. Plans are for a poolside, or pool area, tiki bar, and a tropical shirt/costume contest. There will be prizes. I also am asking clubs to consider bringing door prizes as has been done in the past. What is collected will be given out on Sunday after the Parade of Green and brunch. Featured speaker for the Sunday brunch will be Lion Erik van Kuijk, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair U of M Dept of Ophthalmology & Visual Neurosciences. Many of you have heard Lion Erik at other Lion functions, but he has never presented at one of our Mid-Winters, so here he is! Lion Jeff Thompson District Governor
2 5M8 Mid-Winter Gwen A. White from Columbia, North Carolina, USA, was elected to serve a two-year term as a director of Lions Clubs International at the association s 100th International Convention held in Chicago, Illinois, USA, June 30 through July 4, Director White is a motivational speaker and non-profit manager. A member of the First Flight Lions Club since 1994, she has held many offices within the association, including club president, district governor and multiple district Centennial coordinator. In recognition of her service to the association, Director White has received numerous awards, including a Senior Builder Key Award, an Extension Award, a Master Key Award, a Membership Key Award, an International President s Award and the Ambassador of Good Will Award, the highest honor the association bestows upon its members. She is also a Melvin Jones Fellow. In addition to her Lions activities, Director White has been active in numerous professional and community organizations, including the Outer Banks Woman s Club, Dare Community Crime Line, NC General Federation of Women s Club and the Albemarle Church of Christ. Director White s husband, Rhett, is also a Lion 5M8 Mid-Winter
3 Greetings As of this writing, another calendar year has passed and we begin a New Year. Happy New Year! It also means we have approximately 6 more months left in our current Lions calendar. Let s resolve to make the next 6 months of Lions more successful than the previous ones; invite a neighbor, a friend, or even a family member to Lions meeting or function. Or better yet, ask them to join. Lions success comes from our members and it naturally follows that the more members we have, the more successful we become. A few years back when I was asked to consider running for District Governor, part of what I was being told was that it goes by quickly. I believe those were some words of wisdom my year as a 2nd Vice and now as First Vice District Governor has gone by quickly. It seems like just yesterday I was nominated from the floor of our Mid-Winter Convention and now our annual Mid-Winter Convention is just around the corner where I will be nominated for District Governor. This brings me to a point; if you are considering becoming a District Governor, believe me, the time does go by quickly. If you re a little apprehensive because you are employed full time, don t be. I know from first-hand experience that for club visits, clubs are more than willing to accommodate a time slot that works for your schedule. Yes, there are a few highly recommended training sessions to attend, but you are given a full year calendar in advance. For the few days you might need to take off during the work week, I can attest, the training is useful not only in Lions, but in your employment as well. So please, if you think you might be interested this year or even some time in the future, let us know. We would like to make sure you are prepared and have all the resources you need to become a great District Governor for District 5M8. My wife, Lion Pam and I will be attending most of the Multiple District s Conventions. The first weekend in January we will be up at Cragun s attending District 5M9 s Mid-Winter. The following weekend is in Bloomington if memory serves me. The reasons we like to attend other Lions functions is three fold 1.) we often learn something new 2.) we come away with a renewed enthusiasm for Lions, and 3.) we enjoy the fellowship of other Lions. If you would like to see what other Lions Districts are doing, I would visit the Multiple Web site a and click on Districts and then select the various Districts. Thank you for all you do for Lions FVDG Michael Cramer District 5M cell home

Submit all information to: Lion Pam Cramer Charting New Courses In 5M8 Lions Editor Notes: Happy New Year Welcome 2019 What s on your list of resolutions or goals for the upcoming year? Now is the perfect time to think about Charting New Courses! Times seems to move faster and faster with so much happening in our life, in which Lions is a great part of. I m excited and yet perhaps a bit humbled to know Mike and I will be stepping up our roles and commitment to Lions even more in the upcoming months. The community of Lions is a great group of dedicated and serving people. As we read and hear about what Lions are doing in our communities and across the globe, it is astounding. To be a part of this We Serve group is fun and so rewarding. Every Lion in 5M8 that I have become acquainted with have shown me heart warming willingness to make the communities and lives of those around us better. A personal goal of mine this year is to strive to make a positive impact or difference in all I do. I want to step a bit more out of my comfort zone and give a little more of myself to help others. Lions certainly gives each of us this opportunity. Tasks and roles of all shapes and sizes are there for us to each participate in. Our lives are constantly moving forward and new courses and paths are always ahead of us. Now is the perfect time to consider where you want your 2019 paths to take you. In Lions I hope you will embark, with me, and consider what you can do in stepping up. Share a few H.U.G.S.
