6 Demographics Cancer Survivors in Appalachia More likely to associate cancer and death, believe in long- standing myths about cancer Strong need for financial support transportation, medications, utility and medical bills, etc.. Geographic barriers and less access to survivorship information in their community. Concerns about cancer may be more pressing by other cultural factors, such as rural intimacy (knowing your neighbors) and strong social networks (tight knit community)
7 Approach Address educational needs identified by cancer survivors in Appalachia Conduct a workshop in Appalachia Ohio to increase accessibility for survivors in this community Bringing cancer experts from Columbus to the Appalachian community to present Invited cancer survivors through support groups and patient navigator programs in Appalachia Ohio
8 Program Promotion Save the Date Wednesday, October 29, :00a.m. - 3:00p.m. Think Pink Cancer Survivor Workshop Location Ohio Valley Christian Assembly Rocksprings Road Pomeroy, Ohio The Think Pink Cancer Survivor Workshop will address the following concerns of breast cancer survivors: Advances in Survivorship Issues Body Image and Sexuality Relaxation and Guided Imagery Role of Diet & Exercise Learning to Live Again Community Resources There is no cost to attend, but all attendees must register by October 15th. 12 Key Findings Including local cancer survivors in program planning and workshop was critical to the appeal. Enjoyed presentations from regional and national cancer experts. Eager to pose questions to medical oncologist from a Comprehensive Cancer Center Appreciated direct access to the latest cancer information
13 Key Findings Comments from evaluations: Knowing I m not alone Sharing with other survivors Appreciated the variety of presentations Fulfills a need in the community I hope it becomes an annual event
14 Lessons Learned Program Evaluations supported need for more survivorship programs in Appalachia Providing credible information about cancer locally was well received by cancer survivors MCCI received funding from Komen for the Cure, Columbus Affiliate to conduct another Cancer Survivorship Workshop this year.
