1 Fort Worth Chapter The Institute of Internal Auditors AUDIT NEWS May 2015 President s Message We had a FANTASTIC program at our May meeting. We had 62 registrants and walk-ins. First of all, our IDEA/ACL group met at 9:30. Kathy Perkins delighted us with a presentation from the perspective of an IDEA beginner and we earned a full hour of CPE; we now offer a full 3 hours of CPE for the low cost of $35 each month!!!. Then we heard from our very own Danny Goldberg, who dazzled with his presentation on People Centric Skills. He was followed by John Wszelaki, Past Chairman North American IIA Board, who spoke on our profession. John is the Internal Audit Director for Virginia Department of Alcohol Beverage Control and discussed lessons learned in his 35 years in the audit profession. He spoke to the state of the profession, strategic direction for North America and the IIA. Be sure to sign up for our first meeting of the year, which will be a full day seminar, Friday August 7.!!! ~Steve Shepherd Be sure to sign up for our first meeting of the year, which will be a full day seminar, Friday August 7. We have another fantastic program lined up. We will have a half day on social media risks, then Danny Goldberg will dazzle us again for a half day after that. That seminar will be held at GM Financial in Arlington. HAPPY TRAILS Thank you for allowing me to serve you as President the past 2 years! I feel that I got WAY more out of the experience than I gave back, AND I made LOTS of new friends along the way. I thank you all for making these past 2 years so special to me, and although it was a lot of hard work, I will remember this as one of my most rewarding experiences. My sincere appreciation to our Officers, Governors, Chairpersons, and committee members for all the successes we ve had these past 2 years. We reached GOLD in the Chapter Achievement Program and received the IIA s Certificate of Recognition both years. In addition to adding a 3 rd hour of CPE for the low cost of $35, we also implemented a committee structure that produced many of our new leaders within the chapter, not the least of which were the CAE Committee, the Academic Relations Committee, the Newsletter Committee, the Programs Committee, and the Website Committee. I think you will agree that we ve seen vast improvements in these areas, thanks to the hard work and commitments of some very talented individuals at the Chair level and the committee member level. Let s all get behind our new officers and continue to support them as they lead our chapter to new heights! I encourage each and every one of you to take advantage of the opportunity to serve this chapter at any capacity. You won t hear me make many guarantees, but I will guarantee you this, volunteer with this chapter, and you will find that you will gain much more than you give back, just like I did. Happy Trails to yall!! 8 Upcoming Events Cyber Defense in Financial Services 4 Free hrs. of CPE!!! Cybersecurity is undoubtedly a top risk for financial services organizations. Consider the amount of data that is stored or transmitted in today s digital world. Customer data is transmitted through online and mobile interactions with firms. Firms collect a massive amount of customer data, and much of that data is transmitted to their third-party service providers. A successful breach of a firm s cyber defenses could result a tremendous windfall for the cyber attacker and an equally tremendous downfall for the organization that let it happen. Billions of dollars are spent on sophisticated security systems to protect valuable customer and enterprise data, yet we continue to hear news reports almost daily of major corporations still being hacked. When it comes to cybersecurity at your financial institution, where does internal audit fit in? What role does internal audit play in reinforcing your firm s cyber defense? To celebrate its launch, The IIA s Financial Services Audit Center is hosting this free virtual symposium. This four-hour event will bring together three perspectives on protecting data in the financial services industry. Attendees in this deepdive session will learn about the top risks from an chief information security officer s point of view; standards and guidance from a Fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology; and auditing an information security program in a financial institution from a chief audit executive and his team. Session 1 Cybersecurity: An Enterprise Security Officer s Perspective Session 1 Cybersecurity: An Enterprise Security Officer s Perspective (David W. Stender, CISSP, CSSLP, CAP ) Session 2 TACIT Security: Institutionalizing Cyber Protection for Critical Assets (Ronald Ross, Ph.D) Session 3 Cybersecurity: An Internal Audit Perspective Session 3 Cybersecurity: An Internal Audit Perspective (Travis Finstad, CISA, CISM, CISRC, CRP, Mel Leibsla, CISA, Ben Thomas) CPE Hours Available: 4.0 Prerequisites: None Knowledge Level: All Levels Advance Preparation: None
