We hope that you all had a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. There are lots of exciting things in store for the IPHS in the coming year, so make sure to keep up to date with our monthly newsletters and social media accounts so that you don't miss out!!1

What s New? Social Sciences Ball Members of the IPHS had a great night at the annual Social Sciences Ball in October! Thank you to all of those involved in planning this event - it turned out brilliantly! We hope that the 2017 ball will be just as much fun. Planning an Eventful Year This month our executive team met to organise all of the exciting things that are in the works for the society in 2017! We cant wait to share what we have planned. You can look forward to the IPHS classics such as Meets and Eats, study groups, volunteer opportunities, bush walks and more! As well as some new health promotion projects involving some key areas of public health like food waste, physical inactivity, and sexual health! No More Sign Up Fee This year we have decided to remove the $5 joining fee for our society - so now you can sign up to the IPHS for free! Signing up to the IPHS gives you access to the newly named Illawarra Public Health Society Forum group on Facebook, containing exclusive volunteer and employment opportunities, the chance to get involved with the society at many of our social events, networking opportunities, the monthly newsletter and a space to discuss the current hot topics in public health! 4 Upcoming Events Sublime Point Hike On Wednesday 8th February the IPHS is doing a Sublime Point Hike! Everyone is welcome to come along - carpooling can be arranged if necessary, just send us a message and we will sort it all out! We will go for a refreshing swim at Austinmer Beach afterwards! This will be a great way to get back in touch with your fellow IPHS members before the Autumn semester commences 4th International Student Meet on Public Health #ISMOPH17 Are you interested in attending the International Student Meet on Public Health with fellow IPHS executives? We re seeking 2 people to join us on a group trip to Melbourne to attend this event!! This is an amazing opportunity! Registration is now open - send us a message if you think you would be interested!!4

Get Involved O-week Volunteers The IPHS is currently seeking volunteers to help out with promoting our society to new UOW students during O-week! This would involve manning our stall and talking to students about what we do as a society and why it would be a great idea for them to sign up for free! If you would be interested in helping out, then just send us a message! Your help would be greatly appreciated. Smoke Free Ambassadors As many of you may know, last year UOW went smoke-free! A crucial part of upholding that policy was the work done by our smoke-free ambassadors! This year we are continuing this program during O-Week! So if you saw our red shirted ambassadors strolling around campus last year and wanted to become involved then now is your chance! This is a paid position and a training day may be required. New, as well as previous ambassadors, are welcome! If this sounds like something you would be interested in then fill in the application form at the link below ASAP and we will be in contact. There are 13 ambassador positions available. The cut off for application is 10th February. So come and help us in taking our next steps to maintaining a smoke-free environment!

The 2017 Team Nicole Jade Gonzaga What I m studying: I am studying a Bachelor of Public Health majoring in Epidemiology. What I hope to do: I am hoping to work in the health sector doing research, managing and creating programs that increase health outcomes within communities. This may be in hospitals, governments, schools and other institutions. What I love: I absolutely love learning new things. I love to read books, travel around the world, performing as a singer on the sidelines, learn new languages, cuddle cute animals and spend time with loved ones. Why IPHS: I have a passion for Public Health as it looks at health holistically and brings all health professionals together to solve problems within communities and globally. I wanted to start where I was. IPHS enabled me to meet likeminded people who's goal is to engage individuals and ignite change to create healthier lifestyles. If I could be an object, what would I be and why?: A camera - I love the idea of capturing moments in time; people, places, things. Time moves so quickly and to be able to capture my favourite moments would be surreal. I want to make a collection of photographs of everyone I love and have met as they have their own profound stories. Mary-Ann Hernandez What I m studying: I am in my second year of a Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences. What I hope to do: I am hoping to pursue a career in the medical field by continuing postgraduate study in public health and eventually postgraduate study in medicine. What I love: Embracing a lifetime of learning; meeting new people; travelling somewhere foreign; a good cup of coffee; DOGS; painting while listening to Bon Iver; and having a good laugh with my family and friends. Why IPHS: It provides valuable opportunities to get firsthand, practical experience in all aspects of the public health industry through volunteer work, internships, and conferences; the network created and fostered within the IPHS allows you to meet like-minded students with a common interest in becoming an advocate for public health. If I could be an object, what would I be and why?: A watercolour palette - my earliest childhood memories involve my dad teaching me how to paint or watching him paint; I was always intrigued by the beautiful amalgamation of watercolour paints created by mixing the most simplest of colours.!6

Shaye Davenport What I m studying: I am studying a Bachelor of Social Science, majoring in Health Promotion. What I hope to do: Regarding my university degree, my aspiration is to work in smoking cessation or substance abuse and the associated preventions. What I love: I love being with friends, family, travel is always a blast! And I also love dogs! Why IPHS: I have been with IPHS for over one year now and have been really inspired by the passion that is demonstrated toward their projects, which I have strove to emulate in my current role. They are a wonderful group of people with common interests in promoting and maintaining health in our university and the wider community. This evidently provides practical experience in preparation for the workforce. If I could be an object, what would I be and why?: I am very protective toward the people I love and care about, so I would be an umbrella. Amelia Byrne What I m studying: Bachelor of Social Science Majoring in Public Health. What I hope to do: I hope to finish this degree in 2017, and apply for a Bachelor of Midwifery or a Bachelor of Nursing. I have wanted to be a nurse and/or midwife since I was about 16, and I can t wait to make a difference in people s lives! Within my role as Vice President, I hope to promote mental health awareness and knowledge, to the Illawarra Public Health Society as it is a something that I am passionate about. What I love: I love listening to music, drinking lots of good coffee, spending time with those I care about, I enjoy visiting and immersing myself in Asian cultures and getting lost in the different smells and tastes of the Asian cuisine, I love watching The Walking Dead, and going to the NRL football games with my Dad Go the Cronulla Sharks! Why IPHS: The IPHS brings a diverse range of people together who are all passionate about health. It provides a network of fantastic individuals, relevant information about current public health issues, it provides numerous volunteering opportunities and enables students to meet new people and enhance their understanding and knowledge of health! If I could be an object, what would I be and why?: A conductor s baton. As it is crucial for keeping an entire orchestra in time, and working together cohesively to produce a beautiful piece of music. Without a conductor s baton the conductor would not be able to direct the ensemble of musicians.!7

Olivia Fox What I m studying: I m in my 3rd year of a Bachelor of Public Health Nutrition. What I hope to do: I hope to help people make healthy diet choices and to promote nutrition through social media platforms to reach as many people as possible. I d like to write a cook book about cheap and healthy eating for Uni students, it would have helped me when I first moved out of home to come to UOW! What I love: I love dogs, travelling, cooking (and eating), going to the markets, and relaxing with friends and family. Why IPHS: The IPHS appealed to me because it seemed like a great way to meet likeminded people, and to get involved with a society that presented opportunities for me to promote health in the Uni environment. I also love that I get to use the skills that I learn in my degree in the society. If I could be an object, what would I be and why?: I would be an external hard drive so that I could store all of my memories forever. I hate forgetting things and I wish I could remember everything in perfect detail. Emily Tadros What I m studying: Bachelor of Public Health What I hope to do: I hope to do research that can contribute to improving the social determinants of health, specifically the built environment. What I love: I love being physically active, whether it's going to the gym, yoga, for a walk, hike or swimming. Why IPHS: I chose to be involved in IPHS because I believe that small changes around the uni campus can contribute to making UOW a health supporting environment. If I could be an object, what would I be and why?: A coffee machine so I can bring happiness to everyone, one cup at a time!8

Aimee Marchesi What I m studying: Bachelor of Public Health - Majoring in Epidemiology What I hope to do: I hope to positively affect all those around me, be inspiring and help them reach their full potential. I also wish to use my knowledge from my degree as well as continually learning from the world around me to make a positive difference to as many peoples lives as possible. What I love: Making those around me happy and smile, I love to motivate people to do their best each day, making people feel good about their achievements. Why IPHS: I have a lot of interest in the IPHS due to its close relations to my degree. I feel that my involvement here will help to use my knowledge in a hands on fun way. Here I can contribute to such a positive thinking, motivated group of people to help support public health in the university environment as well as the wider community and encourage others to get involved. If I could be an object, what would I be and why?: I would be a camera. I love taking photos and if I were a camera I would have the ability to capture all the amazing aspects the world has to offer all around us. Krystian Stergiou What I'm studying: Bachelor of Public Health What I hope to do: I am looking at entering the Public Health area and would like to contribute in making a difference in the health of individuals and our society. I believe that good heath for individuals can be achieved by providing them with the opportunity to succeed. What I love: Piano, Football, watching sport, beach, drinking (in moderation ), outings with friends, playing billiards, gym, taking my dog for runs and swims at the beach Why IPHS: The IPHS is a stepping stone in potentially building a career within the area and I see it as a great opportunity to exercise what I have learnt and export health on a small scale to other people around me If I could be an object, what would I be and why?: It is not so much of n object, but I would be a could so I could just chill out and not have to worry about anything while I float around where ever the wind takes me. I would talk to my fellow clouds until I wished that a gust of wind would blow me in other direction so I could go and relax by myself and be left alone!9
