SERVING MID-CALIFORNIA & NORTHERN NEVADA FY 2013 ANNUAL REPORT PLANNED PARENTHOOD MAR MONTE A PLACE I CAN TRUST PPMM

When the Affordable Care Act becomes law in 2014, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte is prepared for our trusted and essential services to be more in demand than ever. Thousands of new patients who will become eligible for insurance for the first time can rely on ppmm s excellent reproductive health services and, at select health centers, general medical care for adults and children. In fiscal year 2013, when we were confronted by budget cuts in California as well as an increasing shortage of doctors and clinicians due to outdated fee-reimbursement rates, ppmm continued our strong advocacy work on behalf of women and families who are struggling in a weak economy. We provided our nationally recognized education programs for teens, even after public funding was slashed to the bone. And some counties we serve have invited ppmm to expand comprehensive primary care at our health centers in preparation for newly insured people who will be coming into the system. The shifting national health care landscape is the most dramatic in more than a half-century, and it poses significant challenges as well as significant opportunities. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte is committed to continuing to serve our clients and bringing our quality, compassionate care to new patients who need us most. THERE IS NO QUESTION IN MY MIND. WE WILL BE NEEDED MORE THAN EVER. LINDA WILLIAMS, PRESIDENT AND CEO 70% OF PPMM S PATIENTS LIVE AT OR BELOW 100% OF THE FEDERAL POVERTY LEVEL. 85% LIVE AT OR BELOW 200%. PPMM

REAL DEMAND: 420,122 PPMM FAMILY PLANNING VISITS PLANNED PARENTHOOD TOOK CARE OF ME, MY HUSBAND AND MY CHILDREN. THIS IS SUCH A GOOD PLACE FOR MY FAMILY. Maria * and Victor * were introduced to ppmm a decade ago when Maria found a lump in her breast. They did not have health insurance, and Maria didn t know where to turn. Victor s mother, who had her well-woman exams at her Planned Parenthood health center, told Maria to make an appointment: Planned Parenthood will help you. Maria went in for breast cancer screening, and the compassionate, professional care she received from the staff, who were able to speak to her in Spanish, reassured her right away. She was relieved to find that she did not have cancer. She was also delighted that she had found health care for her entire family. When she became pregnant, she went to ppmm for her prenatal care. She and her mother-in-law continued to have well-woman exams at the health center, and Maria went there for her contraceptives. Years later, when Victor decided to have a vasectomy, he talked to the health educators at ppmm to learn more about the procedure and what he could expect. 20,220 ADULT PRIMARY CARE VISITS 5,901 PEDIATRIC CARE VISITS MEDICAL SERVICES *names have been changed

MEDICAL SERVICES 5,545 PRENATAL CARE VISITS 10,913 PREGNANCY TESTS AND COUNSELING 16,885 ABORTIONS I first came to Planned Parenthood when I was 16 for STD screening and birth control. I needed to go somewhere where I was anonymous, private and safe and where people would really take care of me. I found that place. I started coming to Planned Parenthood when I lost my insurance after my divorce. My experiences have always been very positive, with friendly staff who don t judge me. I appreciate Planned Parenthood being there to help those of us who otherwise would not have access to care. 303 STERILIZATIONS 27,502 OTHER SERVICES REAL ACCESS: 507,391 TOTAL PPMM MEDICAL VISITS

WHEN I CAME TO PLANNED PARENTHOOD, I KNEW I WAS SAFE. I FOUND A PLACE I COULD TRUST. Dolores * came to this country years ago from Mexico when she was a child, and her mother worked in the cherry orchards to make a better life for her and her sisters. Dolores is close to obtaining U.S. citizenship, but when she became pregnant she was worried she wouldn t be able to find health care: Because I didn t have a social security number, I was always turned away. When she found prenatal care at her local Planned Parenthood health center, she thought it was almost a miracle. Now she has a healthy child and attends a parenting class at the health center every week. When I came to Planned Parenthood, I knew I was safe, Dolores said. I found a place I could trust. *names have been changed EDUCATION CONTACTS: 24,421 HIGH SCHOOL 1,591 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 23,506 FACTS OF LIFE LINE CALLERS 7,596 MIDDLE SCHOOL 219 PEER EDUCATORS EDUCATION/OUTREACH

So, for decades, she has received her reproductive health care from family planning and birth control to well-woman exams at a Planned Parenthood health center. Because Kate knows that many other women also rely on this excellent, affordable care, she has tirelessly advocated for ppmm by phone-banking, calling legislators and knocking on doors to urge support for protecting access to women s health care. Planned Parenthood is an absolute necessity for so many women, she said. Even some of those, like me, who have insurance coverage. 140 CALIFORNIA CAPITOL DAY ATTENDEES *names have been changed
