2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission The mission of the Tennessee Breast Cancer Coalition is to be the foremost advocate and provider for Tennesseans facing breast cancer through individual assistance, education and legislative action. Background The Tennessee Breast Cancer Coalition began as a grassroots organization in 1995 with a mission to eradicate breast cancer. Rather than allowing the disease to control its victims, survivors, family members, and friends nationwide decided to fight against the disease through action and advocacy. Today we are able to provide assistance to men and women in Tennessee through support of community outreach programs and our Emergency Access Fund. Impact Through fund raising the Tennessee Breast Cancer Coalition has contributed over $2.95 million for education, advocacy, awareness and financial assistance to breast cancer patients. Our Emergency Access Fund (EAF) continues to assist patients who have become financially burdened due to loss of income and the inability to work while in treatment. In 2015 through our EAF we helped 123 individuals and their families keep their home, pay rent, utilities and/or insurance premiums. In 2016 we assisted 114 patients while in 2017 funds helped 126 breast cancer patients keep their home, and utilities running. Our 2018 EAF budget is $120,000 in hopes to assist more individuals and their families during treatment for breast cancer. Needs While TBCC continues to grow and help breast cancer patients in Tennessee we could do so much more if we had more funding. Funding specifically for our Emergency Access Fund (EAF). Each year we raise our budgeted amount for this fund and each year we run out of money before December 31. Our EAF budget for 2017 was $115,000 and those funds were depleted in November. We have been able to increase the 2018 budget for EAF to $120,000. With a max awarded to qualified patients of $1000 the $120,000 does not go far enough. Where do these patients turn, who else is helping them? If a patient is in active treatment and unable to work, where is the money coming from to pay those necessities? And we are talking bare necessities, place to live and heal, running water, electricity and gas for heat or air conditioning. Imagine that you are single mother with young children and you can't work while you are going through breast cancer treatment, who will pay your basic necessities? 4 Programs Programs Emergency Access Fund Description The Emergency Access Fund provides financial assistance to men and women in financial need due to inability to work and/or mounting medical expenses incurred while undergoing treatment of breast cancer. This fund has provided assistance in preventing evictions, paying utilities, insurance and medical necessities. Due to the increased need for this program and the fact that each year TBCC exhaust the funds budgeted for assistance before year end the TBCC Board has made the EAF priority. Budget Population Served,, Examples of Program Success In 2011, sixty one percent (61%) of the funds awarded were to assist breast cancer patients and their families with rent or mortgage payments. Twenty eight (28%) of the funds went to pay for individuals utilities, while seven percent (7%) went for medical expenses and four percent (4%) helped retain health insurance for breast cancer patients. 4
