2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement The Parkinson Association of Northern California is dedicated to enhancing the lives of those affected by Parkinson's through education, support, and comfort. Background Statement The Parkinson Association of Northern California (PANC) was established 20 years ago by a small group of Parkinson patients and their caregivers holding meetings in a garage. Over the years, the association has grown as is reflected in the growth of support groups and the number of educational seminars and workshops it sponsors. PANC has been established to support the Parkinson patient and their caregiver in their everyday struggle to deal with the disease. Where the National Parkinson Foundation and Michael J. Fox Foundation deal with the major issues of the disease, PANC is focused on bringing the Parkinson community together to collectively address the needs of the Parkinson patient and their caregivers to deal with the disease every day, to make their journey as comfortable as possible. Our goal has been to provide educational opportunities at a reasonable cost, or at no cost to the patient and their caregiver. Our philosophy is the more you know about the disease and how to manage it in concert with your physicians, the better your quality of life. Further, the very nature of PANC encourages social / psychological support through sharing experiences and achievements. Needs Statement The Parkinson Association of Northern California (PANC) is now reaching a small percentage of those in our area affected by Parkinson s disease. We estimate that there are approximately 40,000 people in Northern California (not including the Bay Area) who have Parkinson s. Add in the caregivers, the figure doubles. You can only imagine all of the family members and friends that are affected and the number exceeds 100,000. Our most pressing needs are: 1.Increase (double) circulation of 'The Parkinson Path' newsletter 2.Expand Respite Care subsidies for Parkinson's 'families' 3.Establish a fundraising plan for consistent income (we do not receive government funds 4.Volunteers (qualified Board members to office staff) 5.Extend education and support to under-represented areas. CEO/Executive Director Statement Statement from our Past President, Larry Alver My involvement with the Parkinson Association began when my wife, Betsy, was diagnosed with Parkinson s almost 19 years ago. Her grandfather, a Methodist minister, was diagnosed with Parkinson s in the 50 s. He decided to go home and go to bed as his way of dealing with the disease. He died a year later. My wife on the other hand is a retired first grade teacher. Once she got past the initial stages of grief over the diagnoses, she began the process of educating herself about the disease and how to mitigate the symptoms. She reached out to the local Parkinson s group, Sacramento Valley Parkinson s Disease Association, later to become the Parkinson Association of Northern California. We have attended almost every seminar in Sacramento since her diagnosis. The first seminar that we attend at the Sutter Cancer Center had about 30 people in attendance. Our most recent seminar at the Crowne Plaza Hotel had over 450 people. While we all wait for a cure and better treatments for Parkinson s disease, the next best thing is to improve our everyday living with the disease. Our organization provides that through education at support groups and through our annual seminar. We also help by sharing our knowledge and experience with others who have been recently diagnosed. My goal as Board Chair was to ensure that we continue to reach out to those in need of help and information when they need it most. Our slogan says it all, Until there is a cure Hope and healing every day." Areas of Service Areas 2

4 Programs Programs Support Groups Description We have over 30 Support Groups spread throughout Northern California from Modesto to Redding and from Loyalton to Fort Bragg. Interested folks may attend a Support Group meeting and learn from others with Parkinson's. The leaders are responsible for the meeting location and running the meeting. The Parkinson Association of Northern California (PANC) takes care of the liability insurance, provides a quarterly newsletter, "The Parkinson Path", maintains a website for resource information and facilitates a network of communications amoung Group leaders. Budget $10, Category Population Served Program Successes Program Success Monitored By Diseases, Disorders & Medical Disciplines, General/Other Parkinson Disease People/Families of People with Health Conditions The successes that come from Group Support meetings are personal to the attendees - examples - insight from speaking to others in a similar situation, ideas to overcome one of the many physical challenges facing those with Parkinson's. The fact that folks in the community have come to these meetings for nearly 20 years speaks volumes. The number of Support Groups continue to grow and the volume of attendees grows as well. Still, there is a need to reach newly diagnosed people who would benefit from the Support Group programs, Our Support Group Coordinator is pivotal in receiving and transmitting valuable information among Support Group Leaders. This type of information includes reviews of speakers, materials, activities. New medical resources are identified and shared to promote the awareness of of 'best' information and resources. 4
5 Annual seminar Description An annual seminar with distinguished speakers addressing issues and new information that affects the Parkinson patient and their caregiver is provided annually. The cost of providing the seminar for over 450 people is almost $25,000. Attendees are asked to pay only $20 to participate. Budget $25, Category Population Served Program Successes Program Success Monitored By Diseases, Disorders & Medical Disciplines, General/Other Parkinson Disease People/Families of People with Health Conditions The success of the seminars can be judged by the increase number of people attending. In 2012 the attendance was 235. In 2013 the attendance was over 400. By 2014, there was a 'sold out' status of 425. And 2015's program brought in 470 attendees. The attendees are encouraged to leave their comments. They have all been positive. Monitored by comments of attendees and the rousing interest when the next program is announced. This interest is spread primarily by word of mouth and reputation of the Conferences. Board directors conduct a debriefing to identify positives and opportunities for improvement. 5
