3 Participate in the Parade Gets parents involved by asking them to help children with activities (Parents need a specific ask) Messaging from Kids to parents Suicide Prevention subcommittee: Peg Brady Peg attended the NYS Suicide Prevention Conference 1700 too many in September. She highlighted the Strategic Planning Process that was taught at the conference. The process is data informed using CDC and local data about both completed and attempted suicides, demographics, and methodology. The big focus is on the questions WHO, HOW, WHY, and WHAT. The goal is to perform a SWOT analysis and identify existing resources for suicide prevention and mental health. Currently we are working on purchasing t-shirts for the SOS program participants with two SOS messages: Keep Calm and Talk to a Trusted Adult and U ok? Friends Ask The shirts would also have the coalition logo and SOS logos on the back. We can get the shirts at cost and the printing will be donated by the Strong Family. We are looking to get them by the holiday parade so the students can march and hand out suicide prevention information. Peg will send out a doodle poll for this subcommittee to plan an early November meeting. Kait will get data. Kait will ask SOS about attending the Survivor day event on Nov. 19 th and the Parade on Nov. 20 th. Mike will post info that Peg brought back from the conference on the school website. Kait will get hard copies to hand out at events. Jenn will send out a survey about how to spend the unrestricted funds. Deputy Kitts Deputy Kitts has been a Saratoga County Sheriff s Deputy for 3 years and previously worked as a local officer in Ballston Spa and Granville. He is a Drug Recognition Expert trained to evaluate drivers and detect impairment from drugs other than alcohol. There are no legal limits for other drugs so he determines if the individual is safe to operate a motor vehicle or not and his training allows him to testify as in expert in court.
4 Coalition Subcommittees Meeting Update-James Field Sobriety tests are designed to detect physical impairment while the 12 step DRE process detects cognitive impairment. He also responds to fatal crashes to determine if the driver is using drugs or if the crash was caused by a health impairment. Before becoming a DRE he was trained in ARIDE and is a police mental health trainer. There are now 3 DREs working in Saratoga County. He attended the International Conference in Denver with PFS funding to learn more about driving while impaired by marijuana and opioids. The Denver Traffic Safety Board presented some of their initiatives to reduce Driving While High, this includes a simulated smoke filled car that drew attention and when the windows came down, a message appeared that read Drive High, Get a DUI. They also put vintage video games in bars and shops that require users to participate in data collection followed by the showing of a short PSA on driving under the influence. Once that is complete, the person can play 3 games for free. Denver is seeing an increase in fatal crashes and crashes in general. As well as overdoses while people are driving. Some departments are using a rapid oral swaps to test for marijuana. Deputy Kitts is working on a modified DITEP like training for educators that will in 4 hours given them the skills to recognize impairment in students. Parents can use at home drug testing kits. Thank you Deputy Kitts to attending this important training and reporting back to us. LEC: Working on High Visibility Enforcement and prevention messages for DUI PEC: Conducing another round of focus groups DEC: Media creation and distribution The marketing class at the high school will be offered the opportunity to work on creating media about medication safety. Coalition members will distribute Take Back Day information. James will send a survey about keeping all 3 committees or meeting as 1 pfs committee.
