LIONS 105SW DISTRICT NEWSLETTER OCTOBER EDITION Aim : HIGH Hope Inspiration Goals Humanity There is a new world-wide initiative being launched called New Voices. This is aimed at enlisting women into the organisation, but I believe that this should apply to all genders, as every pair of hands can make a difference. New Voices in Service. Lions Serve. They are ready whenever and however their communities need them. We should be looking at service projects and how we can enhance our visibility in our communities. New Voices in Membership. Lions make up the largest voluntary service organisation in the world. We are always looking for more caring people who want to make a difference. New Voices in Leadership. Lions are global Leaders in both community and humanitarian service. We need to encourage our members to look beyond themselves and be looking to lead service and other activities. New Voices in Marketing. Lions bring great reach and compassion to others. We need to blow our own trumpets and let our communities know what we do. This can be through the local press, but more importantly the use of social media, especially Facebook can reach many more people All these tie in with another project Kindness Matters. This is the theme this year for the Peace Poster and Essay competitions. Last month I asked you to set 2 goals for your Club to achieve this year. I hope that you have all had some thoughts and have come up with some ideas. New ideas can make a large impact, which reflect your community, it s interests as well as its needs Let us all reach beyond our limits and reach out to enrich our communities. This will enable our profile to become even larger and people will want to join us, especially if we can show that we are having Fun whilst achieving these aims, and show that Kindness Matters District Governor Lion Peter Rowe

EXETER WEST and a day at the fair. We had three stalls,(1) for homemade cakes-delicious- and some savoury, (2) a bottle stall of empty bottles with coloured stickers on the base. Pay 1-if you pick a bottle with a red sticker you win a real bottle otherwise you lose, (3) we had 500 pairs of flipflops,in linen bags, donated to us by the Eden Project, so we asked people to just choose a pair and give a donation. Lion Twiggy Lake went round collecting in the Lion costume and also climbed the special tower in his costume. Attached are photos of his progress from harness being fitted to collapsing on the ground!. REDRUTH LADIES DARTS LEAGUE MARATHON Five ladies darts teams took part in the darts marathon organised and judged by the Camborne Redruth & District Lions Club. They competed at different venues to get the highest score over a set period of time and to raise sponsorship for Cornwall Air Ambulance The Lions held a presentation evening at the British Rail Staff Club when Lion President Viv Broadhurst presented the Ladies from Carharrack Social Club with a Lions Perpetual Shield, a dart board, medals and a certificate for raising the highest sponsorship with a sum totalling A Cheque for 1050 was presented by Lion President Viv to Gemma Collins from Cornwall Air Ambulance who then thanked the teams for raising such magnificent sum and the Lions for organising yet another successful event.
Clevedon Lions were pleased to support North Somerset Play Forum and their children s Plays Days again this year with money from their annual Dream Scheme, which uses funds raised on the Lions Santa Float at Christmas. This is one of the 12 local organisations that the Lions supported from their Dream Scheme charity fund this year which aims to see local groups' Dream projects come to fruition. The charity organise 2 Play Days in the town each year, which are free for all the youngsters to attend - the kids enjoyed a range of activities including Bubblemania, Punch and Judy, a Fancy Dress Story Time and Face painting with Cuthbert the Clown. The Lions mascot Eric took time out to visit the event with our photos showing the Fun time had by all. Representatives from the South Western Ambulance Foundation Trust community first responders and the St John Ambulance were out in force at the recent fun day organised by the LIONS CLUB OF IVYBRIDGE Picture One: shows a youngster being given a demonstration under the supervision of one of the first responders. Picture Two: shows St John Ambulance staff with a first responder along with Lions Ray Foss (centre) and Andy Vincent (far right) plus a vehicle on site at the fun day.
CHEDDAR VALE LIONS CLUB held an AFTERNOON TEA & PRESENTATION EVENT at Hannah More Cottage in Cheddar on Saturday 8 September. What a fabulous and busy afternoon for Cheddar Vale Lions Club where they were so proud to be able to present cheque donations to five outstanding organisations within the local community, Young Leaders in Service Awards to four amazing young people, plus two Lions Centennial Appreciation Certificates to two incredible individuals for their work in the community. Then to top it all off, a Lions Centennial Plaque presented to Cheddar Library for supporting the community with the services they provide. Wow, a fantastic end to the Lions Centennial year over which all Cheddar members have been hard at work to fundraise and provide a service to their local community. This all finished with a tasty tea provided by Cheddar Vale Lions members and the opportunity to chat to those who attended to let them know that the Club will continue to support and provide service to those that need it in the Valley area. CAMBORNE LIONS recently attended the Redruth Fun Day---and guess what----it was sunny and warm all day. I can only remember Previous Redruth Fun Days being extremely wet. It was the first outing for our new gazebo and flags. We took our Key box ( 1 to purchase 6 keys that were taken from a bucket of keys and if one of those keys opened the lock on the box then the lucky key holder won 50 ) and our Soft Toy tombola( 1 for six tickets and if the ticket ended in a O or 5 then the ticket holder had a choice to select a soft toy prize_ The day went very well for us (The key that opened the box was not found so we kept the 50 to use on another occasion) and the combined takings from the Key box and Soft Toy Tombola made a profit of 167 that went into our charity account) The attached photos show young Seb from Redruth trying to open the box with the Keys he selected. The other photo is of the new gazebo and flags

Lions Club International Youth Exchange - District 105SW Creating Global Citizens across Cultures and Around the World Inward Youth Exchange 2018 This year 105SW hosted two Youth Exchange Students, Linda from Finland and Minda from Norway. Both students were hosted by Lions Sylvia and Keith Cook and sponsored by Cheddar Vale Lions Club. Unfortunately, Linda had to return home due to the recurrence of a health issue. However Minda enjoyed all of the hosting time and had the company of two students hosted by DG Lion Sally Marsh and Lion Colin Marsh of Radstock and Midsomer Norton Club, 105SW. This is the fourth year that 105SW and 105W Youth Teams have worked together. An interesting and varied programme of events had been planned for the young visitors, some of which were organised or sponsored by other neighbouring Lions Clubs. PDG Lion David Atkins had a great chat with the young visitors and presented them each with a Glastonbury & Street Lions Club bannerette, plus his own DG bannerette. DG Lion Sally also presented all the students with her bannerette, which was in the form of a mouse mat very useful and an idea which I am sure will catch-on! The Lions International Youth Exchange Programme aims to fulfil one of the LCI Purposes: To create and foster a spirit of understanding among peoples of the world. I would like to thank all the individual Lions and Lions Clubs who made it possible for District 105SW to be part of the Lions International Youth Exchange this year. Special thanks to Cheddar Vale Lions Club for sponsoring Youth Exchange Students once again, and to Lions Sylvia and Keith Cook who were, as always, such excellent Hosts. There is no denying that hosting can be tiring but, as Sylvia and Keith will agree, it is also very rewarding. The key, I believe, is to have the full backing of ones own Sponsoring Club and the support, be it financial or practical, of neighbouring Clubs. With this support the whole experience is more fun, a lot less work and a really special experience for all. It has been my pleasure to be involved with the combined hosting between Cheddar Vale Lions in our own District 105SW and Radstock & Midsomer Norton Lions in 105W. I sincerely hope that Lions in 105SW will be encouraged to host Youth Exchange Students in 2019 and that Clubs will sponsor Outward Youth Exchange Students. Those who do can be assured of my full support. Lion Theresa Warrell 105SW District Youth Exchange Officer ta.warrell@btinternet.com
