2 District 2E2 Let s Serve 2018 February Volume 15, Issue 9 Charlie s Chat 9/1/2017 Charlie s Chat Mar 18 We have approximately 3 ½ months left in this Lions year and, at the risk of being repetitive, a lot of work to get accomplished. I very much need all of you to do your best in helping the District reach our goals for Membership, Service, and Leadership. DISTRICT GOVENOR Charlie Bethards A couple of our newer clubs (Mansfield and Flower Mound) have held their charter parties and each raised signmificant funds to help support their administrative costs and projects going forward. I would llike to thank those District 2E2 Lions and Lions Clubs who donated to these new clubs. District 2E2 will have our District Convention on April (see ). Please plan to attend (see registration at link). In addition to electing next years officers and filling various board positions via the convention and election, this event is a celebration of our Grass Roots Lions. Each 2E2 Lions club is entitled to nominate one Grass Roots Lion (see form at ) who will be honored at the April 28 Luncheon. I encourage you to get any nomination letters into the Elections Chair David Gramm by 30 days ahead of the convention. A listing of the openings to be filled at the convention is enclosed with this newletter. Membership, i.e., service capacity: As of Feb. 28, we were down 182 lions, having added a net of 14 lions during Feb. However we are starting to recruit new lions with 21 so far in Mar. and I know of another 11 that have not been added to MyLCI. We need to collectively recruit a net average of 45 Lions per month (Mar-Jun) to overcome our present deficit. Again repeating, one of our main goals for the Lions year is increasing our service capacity, i.e., increasing our membership, i.e., more Lions more service. We are working on club rebuilding and new club chartering; however, it is clear that to make the goals we are shooting for we will have to have the help of all of the District 2E2 Clubs. I urge each of the District 2E2 clubs to: 1. Plan and conduct a membership event, 2. Do not drop any members during the Feb Jun time frame (your costs will be the same if the drops occur in July and it will give the district more time to respond), and 3. Take every opportunity to recruit. (Just Ask, take neighbor to service event, or fund raising or club meeting). I have watched us for the past 8 years and we have always worked together and shown membership growth each year. We need to recruit and retain (stop Lions from leaving). To recruit, identify those you rely on goods and services or others and then ASK. BE prepared with a short talk about what Lions do, what your club does, etc. In the last two months I have asked the hotel manager and a student waitress and both joined different local lions clubs. I have also asked a door to door salesman and he will be joining our Lions Club. I have also asked who knows how many that so far have not joined. The point is you have to ASK. All clubs have been informed of their club goals and as you know we have announced a District 2-E2 awards program. Please see the enclosed status sheet for how each club is doing on the membership award. There is also a meeting on April 7 th that we are expecting to see the Leadership from each club attend. 3 District 2E2 Let s Serve 2018 February Volume 15, Issue 9 Pete s Note 9/1/2017 Pete s Notes Fellow Lions, we are facing the last 4 months of this Lions year. The Lions of our district have completed many projects and contributed labor and treasure to improve the lives of mankind in our community and the world in the spirit of Lionism. But, there still more work to do, since us as Lions could upgrade our service if we had more service capacity. (More hands to help us). We in the District 2-E2 have lost many Lions during this year for reasons we know and others we do not know. As of this date 2/28/18 we, in the district, have lost 181 members for various reasons. To look at the data, clubs have added 253 new members but lost 434 members.this not a good retention rate trend. Our district has been positive in membership for the last 6 years. We as a team can improve the deficit number by aggressively addressing the problem. First of all, I strongly urge the clubs not to drop members until July 1, Dropping members for reasons such as non-payment of dues is not acceptable. Because the clubs have already been charged for the dues as of January 1, There is absolutely no economic advantage to the clubs. Secondly, dropping members because of none attendance is not a good reason, because there is no mandatory of attendance requirement. If a member does not attend the club meeting but is paying his / her full share of the dues, that member is contributing to the overall wellness of our total organization. With the above described drops, I must urge to presidents and secretaries of clubs to review your records and reinstall these lost members. Let s do it for our District and who knows these members may remain in club. The leadership of the district has been urging clubs to hold an Open House for membership drive. There is still a sufficient amount time to conduct this kind of membership drive. Invite your friends to a common setting in your community, serve some simple refreshment, finger food and talk to your prospective member about Lionism, who we are and what Lions do. Talk to guests about what your club does your community. Now is the time for your club to review and evaluate your leadership and make plans for the upcoming election of new officers and leaders in your club. I am urging Lions to seek new positions of leadership in the district. This is another way of serving. I would like encourage Lions to attend the TEXAS LIONS LEADERSHIP FORUM IN AUSTIN at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on March 17 and 18. Our 2-E2 convention is scheduled for April at the Hilton Garden Inn, 2600 West Port Pkwy, Ft Worth. LION SERVE Lion Pete Koschelew, 1st VDG A

Wow more time to get out and get involved with your club, district and state activities. Let s show off our Lions pin and logo by wearing them every day. Smile, laugh, be energetic and most of all, be Proud to be a Lion while you re out and about on a daily basis. Your enthusiasm will attract other people to be Lions. Remember Just Ask, friends, neighbors, family members, business associates, people in line at the grocery store or department store and don t forget to talk Lions up at your children s or grandchildren s baseball, soccer or softball games. We are currently down -169 members for this year. If every club could bring in 2 new members in by the end of June 2018, I know there will be a couple clubs that bring in more, we can be positive for Again Just Ask it works!! Don t forget to have your 90 second, What Lions do and why I am a Lion speech. Show the public that we have fun working in our communities and helping others. Lions having FUN Serving Others. People become members of Lions Clubs to have FUN serving others. Let s find a way to put the FUN in our meetings and our service projects! 6 Aledo Seven school nurses from the Aledo ISD were escorted to the District Eyeglass Recycling Center for an informational briefing and some hands-on work. Eyeglasses that had been collected were delivered to the District Eyeglass Recycling Center for processing. Arlington Greater Arlington Donated $500 to Meals on Wheels Donated $250 to help start Mansfield Lions Club Donated $1000 to Green Oaks School Donated $4000 to UTA Stem Program Donated $1000 to Advocates for Special People Azle Lions Club The Azle Lions Club has received donations from other nonprofit organizations and individuals for the "Blessing Box". Cleburne Delivers Meals on Wheels Donated to Adam s Elementary Paid for two children to have free eye screenings and for new glasses Denton Triangle Donated funds to the homeless Donated $500 to the Boys and Girls Club Donated $1000 to Abby s Foundation 6 Lions from Colleyville supported the annual Kids Vision Fest by providing vision screening for the children and parents Sean Bryan spoke to the Colleyville Lions Club about diabetes, its effects upon those afflicted with it, and the costs of diabetes. The Colony Four members attended the Council of Governors and Texas Lions Camp meetings in Kerrville, February 2 and 3. Grapevine 14 Lions served lunch to Seniors at the Grapevine REC The Grapevine Lions Club held their annual Magic Show fundraiser The Club donated $1700 to the Grapevine PD to sponsor them for their annual bike ride to Austin in honor of fallen heroes

7 Mckinney The McKinney Noon Lions weekly meeting was held at the Collin County History Museum E. Virginia St. - and the guest speaker was Mr. Chester (Chet) Rohn. Mr. Rohn is a WWII U.S. Army vet, who served in the Battle of the Bulge conflict. Northeast Tarrant Lions Walt & Marsha Mills, Maureen O'Leary and Jerome Davis sourced and collected 247pair of eyeglasses. NET Lions worked at the Watauga ERC sorting, cleaning and prepping donated glasses. Lions Don and Barbara Arquit reached out to the community's sick and home bound folks during February by visiting and bring cheer. Nine McKinney Lions traveled to the District 2E2 Eyeglass Recycle Center to deliver 250-plus pair of collected used glasses. Lion Walt Mills spent 4 hours during the month of February preparing for upcoming Disc Golf Tournament. Lion Tim Mattheus and several volunteers collected trash on Confederate Road in Lakeside Lions Jack and Jeanne Atkinson and Rodney and Sue Clayton volunteered at Miller Elem and Effie Morris Elem Feb 5th and 6th to assist the Essilor Vision Foundation. Over 100 students received eye exams and new glasses. River Oaks We have a brand new Girl Scout Troop and they are meeting in the Boy Scout hut located on our property, 1012 Red Oak Lane, River Oaks, TX. There is a new leader for the Girl Scouts, and they are meeting every Monday. More to follow. Two to three times a year we pick up trash on Hwy 183 (which is also called River Oaks Blvd.). There is a marker entering our city that the River Oaks Lions Club regularly picks up trash on the blvd. The River Oaks Community Center serves a low cost meal every Wednesday. The meal is very reasonable and it gathers a lot of elderly folks for a day out. Southlake Centennial The Southlake Centennial Lions Club put on a two-hour wine & cheese happy hour at The Residences of Watermere, a 55-and-older luxury retirement community. We wanted to make our club known to the residents and to invite them to our meetings and to join. With a stealth team of new and experienced ERC volunteers, we were able to sort then clean thousands of glasses and ultimately send 1,350 onto the next step of reading and identifying the Rx to be filed to go to mission trips across the globe! We also brought along eyeglasses we collected.
