1 The MD 13 OH5 Pride Report District News for May 2017 Over 900 copies in circulation Governor Announcements From the desk of DGe Lion Joe Jackson Pre-School Children are a Priority to Assess Vision A club would be wise to check if the school or program hosting the vision screening requires background checks for Lions working as screeners. Some district cabinets have approved reimbursing Lions for the cost of a background check, $50-$65, through a school district, Educational Service Center (ESC), local police or County Sheriff. If your club or zone needs help, contact Lion Bob Medley ( ) or Norm Brusk ( ). Zone Chair Training Zone Chair training for OH-5 will be in Ashland on July 8, 2017 and Washington Court House in July 15, Involve a Veteran Program The entrance or charter fee waiver for both veterans and active duty military is continued until June 30, Peace Poster The new theme for 2017 is The Future of Peace. Please consider ordering kits ($12) for your club to use with your local public or private school groups, and contact an art teacher on the school staff before the end of the school year. Please make sure that the essay contest is available to visually impaired students ages Learning to Roar: Officer Training June 17, 2017 Der Dutchman, Plain City. DGe Lion Joe Jackson President's Message 24 April 2017 We recently introduced our new global service framework, which is a key component of LCI Forward and reaching our goal of serving 200 million people per year by Youth engagement is a cornerstone of our service framework and each of its five signature service areas. The future of service belongs to youth, and we have an opportunity to guide them as Lions. Encourage young people to volunteer with your club. Listen to their ideas. And give them meaningful leadership roles when they serve. Young people can be more than just volunteers they can be our partners in service. Here are three great ways you can start engaging youth in your community: Reach out to a local high school or youth organization offer to plan a joint service project, and consider funding it. Invite youth to participate in your next service project involve them in planning and give them meaningful roles. Take it to the next level by exploring LCI's youth programs sponsor the Peace Poster Contest, get involved in the Youth Camp and Exchange program or start a Leo club. However you choose to involve young people in your service activities, make sure to give them a voice and recognize their hard work and achievements. When you engage youth in service, you are investing in the future of your club and community. 27 April 2017 In support of our goal of serving 200 million people per year by 2021, we recently unveiled our

2 new global service framework. This service framework focuses the efforts of Lions and Leos into five signature service areas to help identify and address emerging humanitarian needs around the world. Youth engagement is a cornerstone of our service framework. To accomplish our ambitious goals, we must serve more people in more ways than ever before. And that means partnering with young people and engaging these future leaders of Lions clubs and our communities. Every district, club and Lion has the opportunity to help mentor and guide these young leaders of our community by engaging them in service and giving them a voice in Lions. Young people are so important to the growth and success of your district and our association that the board of directors created an ad hoc committee to support and expand our youth engagement. Our new global service framework is sure to generate a lot of excitement and questions. When you're speaking with clubs about the framework, be sure to stress the importance of youth engagement and encourage Lions to give young people a meaningful role in their clubs by engaging them as partners in service. Inspiring the next generation of volunteers is more than an opportunity. It's our responsibility. Very truly yours, Chancellor Bob Corlew Your International President Lions Youth Programs Make Engagement Easy For clubs that want to take youth engagement to the next level, LCI offers a number of established programs: Leos Club Sponsor a club to mentor youth and expand your service impact. Peace Poster Contest Help youth share their vision of peace. Lions Quest Work with a local school to give young people the skills for life. Youth Camp and Exchange Give a young person the experience of a lifetime. Make young people part of your service strategy! Recognize the Hard Work of Youth The Young Leaders in Service Awards program makes it easy to recognize the hard work and achievements of youth leaders in your community. The awards program features everything your club needs to get started, including resources and downloadable awards certificates to present at a club meeting. Visit the Young Leaders in Service page for more information and get started today! Dear Lions, Imagine the joy of a grandparent who gets to see their grandchild for the first time. Imagine the pain of a father who once provided for his family, but now no longer can because a preventable disease stole his sight. These are the reasons why SightFirst is dedicated to providing eye care to underserved communities and fighting preventable blindness. One of our key partners in SightFirst is the World Health Organization (WHO). Through our partnership with the WHO, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) receives technical support for SightFirst initiatives as well as three other areas of importance: our Global Childhood Blindness Initiative, our Diabetic Eye Disease Initiative, and eye care initiatives in China. The results of the partnership are impressive. LCIF has established 45 child-friendly eye care centers in 30 countries, developed a tool to help countries improve upon the measures of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy care, and eliminated trachoma as a public health threat in China. Because of what the WHO makes possible for Continued on Page 3. Page 2

3 SightFirst and our other LCIF initiatives, I am proud to announce the renewal of our agreement with the WHO. The partnership LCIF has with the WHO has been tremendously successful and we are very pleased to have extended our relationship. We are proud to be working with an organization who wants to see progress as much as we do and we look forward to future achievements. Sincerely, Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation A Billion Dollars in Service Recently, LCIF marked a milestone, awarding more than US$1 billion in grants since its founding in Countless individuals and communities have been improved due to Lions and LCIF, including more than 15 million young people who have been exposed to the Lions Quest program. Lions Quest has taught valuable life lessons to children all over the world. Based on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), Lions Quest is teaching children to understand and manage emotions, achieve goals, show empathy, and create positive relationships. Lions Quest also teaches students how to avoid drugs and alcohol. Continuing to support LCIF makes milestones like this possible and supports the education of children worldwide. Watch Lions Quest: New Growth, Proven Success to learn more! Recruiting: Club LCIF Coordinators The Club LCIF Coordinator is an ambassador for LCIF at the club level. This person shares LCIF stories, motivates fellow Lions to support LCIF, and enables LCIF to advance its humanitarian work both locally and globally. This position is crucial to the promotion of our foundation. Talk to your club president today if you are interested in volunteering for this exciting new position. 4 Be A Lion Where There s A Need, There s a Lion Click on above Link Anatomy of a Service/Fundraising Project The Tri-Village Lions invited the Olentangy Noon Lions to work with them on an exciting service/fundraising project and the results were pretty spectacular. This project began during LCI's International Week of Service focusing on community participation/engagement. We invited members of the Tri-Village community to help us decorate eggs for Easter Baskets to be delivered to Nationwide Children's Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. DGE Joe Jackson drove all the way in to participate, and he was joined by more than 100 people from the Tri-Village community. The following week, we took everyone's favorite stuffed animals for a visit to the Easter Bunny. We followed up with the delivery of 60 baskets to sick children. We invite you to take a few minutes to watch the video that shows all the pieces of the project -- and all the happy faces that came with it! HappyEasterfromTVL PHOTO-OP At the State Conference We are in the midst of the Centennial Celebration, and the whole of the upcoming State Convention will be focused on our triumphant history. But we wanted to alert you in advance to a once-in-a-lifetime photo op for those in attendance! The purpose of holding the State conference at Cedar Point this year is to celebrate our heritage by recreating Helen Keller's historic address to the Lions, and her charge to us to become "Knights of the Blind." Each MD13 District Governor has been charged with arriving at the conference with 100+ pairs of eyeglasses. Those glasses from across the State will be combined so that we end up with 1000 pair of eyeglasses piled, tumbled, and arranged together in a display noting our 100th Anniversary and our role as Knights of the blind. You can take a selfie next to the display, or you can get your friends and fellow Lions together and have someone else take a group shot for your club archives. Maybe you can even get Helen Keller to pose with you!!! See you there Saving Sight Right now, there are 39 million people worldwide who are blind, most of whom live in developing countries 80% of them don t have to be. Helen Keller International is dedicated to combatting the causes and consequences of vision loss and making clear vision a reality for those most vulnerable to disease and who lack access to quality eye care. Last year alone, we helped provide 85 million people with treatment to prevent diseases of poverty including blinding trachoma and river blindness. Surgeons trained by our staff also performed more than 10,000 cataract surgeries in the developing world. And in the United States, we screened the vision of more than 82,400 students living in some of our country s poorest neighborhoods and provided free eyeglasses to nearly 18,000 of them. Page 4

10 Global Leadership Team (GLT) Lion Steve Kaplan, District GLT Coordinator Service through Leadership I am honored to be the district GLT coordinator. I am finishing up my second three-year term in this position and it has been a wonderful experience. Five years ago, PDG Fred Breyer chaired this brand-new committee. We developed goals and action plans to strengthen the Lions leadership development within our districts and clubs. Last year PDG Jay Carey took over the reins. Over these past five years, we have and continue to promote many outstanding Lion s programs such as, Guiding Lions, Club Excellence Program, Mentoring Program, Lions Leadership Institutes, Lion s Learning Center and the Lions University. Please contact me for information on any of these programs. Identifying Future Leaders The GLT wants to emphasize the continuing need to identify future leaders. This includes Lions at the club, zone, and district level. Please continue to send in the names of those Lions deserving additional recognition, information and promotional assistance. Learn to Roar Learn to Roar, our club officer and general Lions training seminar was held on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the Der Dutchman restaurant in Plain City. There were 140 Lions present from 40 different Lions Clubs. The teaching staff consisted of myself, PDG Fred Breyer, PDG Jeff Hatfield and Lion Kirby Witmer. Evaluations showed the format, topics and staff were well received. Next year s planning has begun to once again hold the training at the Der Dutchman. The date is set for Saturday, June 17, This year we will have access to three meetings rooms and therefore more room to spread out. I am planning on expanding the format to have 3 sessions each hour. Thus, there will be more optional classes for you to choose topics of interest. All attendees, including those there for officer training, will have elective classes to attend. Club officer-elects will also have some required courses to take. There will be classes (and pins for graduates) for Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers, Membership Chairs, and Tail-Twisters. All Lions, whether an officer-elect or not, are encouraged to come, learn something new and network with your fellow Lions. Again this year there is the Global Leadership Team s banner patch awarded to all clubs that send all 4 of their President-elect, Secretary-elect, Treasurer-elect and Membership Chairelect (as listed on their PU-101) to this training. Please mark your calendars now and help promote this important event. We are now beginning to assemble the staff and select the courses for next year. Course suggestions and volunteers to teach future classes should contact me soon. If volunteering to teach, please indicate your area of expertise in which you would be willing to teach a course. Thanks. Lion Steve Kaplan 2915 Bridle Path Way Troy, OH (937) skpk1984@aol.com Page 10
