Thursday May 28th, 2015 from 1:00pm-3:00pm Skeletal Mimickers and Metabolic Bone Disease It is estimated that more than 10% of fractures occurring in children under 3 years of age are due to abusive injury. The majority of fractures occurring in young children are the result of accidental injury. Metabolic and physiological processes may also lead to fractures, or they may mimic fractures. Some of these medical conditions are readily apparent and easily diagnosed. However, other conditions can be confused with and misdiagnosed as child abuse. Birth trauma is one of these mimics of abusive injury. Normal variations of anatomy and development, such as subperiosteal new bone formation, can also mimic the healing process seen with occult fractures. While some medical conditions, such as Scurvy, Copper Deficiency, and Syphilis, are mentioned as mimics of abusive injury, these conditions are rare, and rarely confused with child abuse. Other more common medical conditions that predisposes to fracture include Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Vitamin D Deficiency and Osteopenia of Prematurity. An inflicted or abusive injury can still occur in these children with metabolic or medical conditions. However, there are still features that help differentiate an accidental from an abusive injury. This workshop will discuss medical conditions, which can present with fractures confused with injuries from child abuse. Case studies will be utilized to outline the approach to the medical evaluation of a child who presents with fracture and may have a medical condition predisposing to fracture.

11 Thursday August 27th, 2015 from 1:00pm-3:00pm Immigration and Sexual Abuse As the undocumented immigrant population and the Latino population in general continue to increase, there will inevitably be an increased demand for competent social workers to work with children and adolescents who have experienced sexual abuse. Helping Latino children and undocumented immigrants obtain child protection services is complicated, especially when the risks of accessing services (such as shame and a fear of deportation) may outweigh the benefits for some children in desperate need of services. In this workshop the participants will learn a number of best-practice strategies, stemming from core values of cultural competence, trust, and the strengths perspective that one can implement while working with undocumented Latino immigrants who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. Narrative Therapy is a particularly useful framework when working through trauma associated with sexual abuse in a culturally sensitive way. Archive available on 09/25/15. Thursday October 8th, 2015 from 1:00pm-3:00pm Medical Neglect Child Neglect accounts for the majority of referrals to child protective services. The prevalence of medical neglect, defined as the failure of a caregiver to provide appropriate health care to the child, is not easily estimated as the diagnosis is not straightforward as neglect occurs along a spectrum from grossly inadequate to optimal medical care. Medical providers and investigators need to understand and balance the medical condition, risk of harm, long-term complications from inadequate treatment, and benefits of treatment as well as the role of individual, family and community factors. Referrals to Child Protective Services may be indicated to ensure appropriate medical care when medical neglect or noncompliance is identified and there is a risk of harm from medical complications. Clear communication and collaboration between members of multidisciplinary team can create a positive process and benefit the child & family.
