2 Featured Speakers Christopher M. Anderson is the Executive Director of MaleSurvivor, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping male survivors of sexual abuse and their loved ones by creating communities of Hope, Healing, and Support. Through it s website, social media platforms, training programs, and professionally facilitated Recovery workshops, MaleSurvivor helps hundreds of thousands of people every year who have been impacted in some way by sexual victimization. Chris joined MaleSurvivor in 2007 after coming to understand the extent to which the sexual abuse he suffered as a child profoundly altered his life. A survivor of multiple forms of childhood trauma with an ACES [Adverse Childhood Experience Study] score of 6, Chris has overcome battles with severe depression, anxiety disorder, and suicidal impulses to become a passionate advocate for survivors of sexual abuse and other forms of childhood trauma. He speaks publicly about his own story, the unique challenges male survivors face, and on the need for greater partnership between professionals and survivors across disciplines. As a speaker, Chris has provided trainings and informational presentations for thousands of professionals in mental health, social work, law enforcement, and the military among other fields including: the National District Attorneys Association, the United Nations (Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict), Department of Defense (SAPRO), Nova Southeastern University, US Congress Victims Rights Caucus, American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, Penn State University, and thousands of students, therapists, social workers, substance abuse counselors, and other mental health professionals in the US and Canada. Chris is also a certified trainer with the National District Attorneys Association (NDAA), and a founding member of the Males For Trauma Recovery workgroup (M4TR) organized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA). He is also a member of the Advisory Board to the National Partnership to End Interpersonal Violence (NPEIV). A member of Local One, IATSE, Chris worked as a stagehand on and off Broadway until He currently lives in New York City with his wife, Jane. Chris graduated in 1996 from St. John s College in Annapolis, MD with a BA in Liberal Arts. Tom Wright is an Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Attorney s Office in Sioux Falls. He was born in Watertown, but grew up most of his life in Yankton. He graduated from Augustana College in 1980, and graduated from USD Law School in Tom has been a trial lawyer for the past 32 years, for both the Minnehaha County State s Attorney s Office and the United States Attorney s Office. He handles primarily homicide trials and child abuse cases, both physical and sexual abuse. Tom has prosecuted 121 jury trials in his career with an overall record of 105 wins, 12 losses, and 4 hung juries. He handled the first trial in South Dakota history that involved DNA testing on animals. Tom is a lifetime prosecutor who sees his primary goal as helping victims of crimes, especially children who have been abused. Tom Wright is a past recipient of the Frank Beigelmeier Public Responsibility Award, and also the recipient of the G.F. Johnson Oral Advocacy Award, and to-date has never had an acquittal on a child abuse or child sexual abuse case.

3 Brett Slingsby, MD is a board certified Child Abuse Pediatrician. He obtained his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia then did his pediatric residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Slingsby then went on to do a three year fellowship in Child Abuse and Neglect at Brown University in Rhode Island. For the past 2 years he has been working at Child s Voice where he evaluates children for possible physical abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. He has evaluated many children for possible abusive head trauma and has testified as a medical expert in these cases. Dr. Slingsby is here today to talk to us about The Controversies Surrounding Abusive Head Trauma. Victor Vieth serves as the Senior Director and Founder of the Gundersen National Child Protection Training Center. Mr. Vieth has trained thousands of child-protection professionals from all 50 states, two U.S. Territories, and 17 countries on numerous topics pertaining to child abuse investigations, prosecutions and prevention. He gained national recognition for his work in addressing child abuse in small communities as a prosecutor in rural Minnesota, and has been named to the President s Honor Roll of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. The Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association named him one of the 21 Young Lawyers Leading us Into the 21st Century. Mr. Vieth graduated magna cum laude from WSU and earned his Juris Doctor from Hamline University School of Law (HUSL). While studying at HUSL, he received the American Jurisprudence award for achievement in the study of Constitutional law and served as editor-in chief of the Law Review. Mr. Vieth has been instrumental in implementing 22 state and international forensic interview training programs and dozens of undergraduate and graduate programs on child maltreatment. Mr. Vieth has published countless articles related to the investigation, prosecution and prevention of child abuse and neglect. He is author of Unto the Third Generation, a bold initiative that outlines the necessary steps we must all take to eliminate child abuse in America in three generations. Nancy M. Free, DO is a Clinical Associate Professor at University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Dr. Free evaluates children for all types of maltreatment and is the Medical Director of Child s Voice, Sanford Children s Hospital, Sioux Falls and Medical Director for Central South Dakota Child Assessment Center, St. Mary s Hospital, Pierre, South Dakota. Dr. Free is active in child abuse prevention efforts and works to improve awareness recognition and response for victims of child abuse and neglect. Dr. Free is a member of Jolene s Law Task Force, a task force commissioned by the South Dakota state legislature to address child sexual abuse in South Dakota.

Target audience includes: social workers, law enforcement, attorneys, judges, victim advocates, counselors, CASA volunteers, first responders, health professionals, medical, nursing, students, daycare providers, teachers, foster parents, and others interested in the field of child abuse and neglect. Statement of Need The National Children s Alliance recommends that child abuse professionals receive continuing education on the latest trends and research in child abuse annually. Child s Voice and Child Advocacy Centers of South Dakota are committed to best practice in the evaluation of children who may be victims of child abuse and neglect. The conference agenda was chosen based on feedback from prior attendees and the multidisciplinary team members.
