1 University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign Fall 2012 Inside this issue: Fall Callout, New Student Welcome Summer Internship Review, Miniature Golf, Mums Fundraiser Pathway Clean-up and Guest Speaker, Club Member Initiation National SASES Meeting 2012 Holiday Meeting, 2013 Officers, Upcoming Dates Agronomy Day On August 16th, the annual Agronomy Day event was held at the South Farms at the University of Illinois by the Department of Crop Sciences, exhibiting current research information on different agronomical topics. Club members set up a table at the event selling doughnuts, coffee, soda pop, and water to the attendees. Pictured at the right are some of the club members who volunteered their time. It was a successful day of sales! Left to Right: Sondra, Katherine, Shannon, and Lanae Left to Right: Brian, Nick, and Alicia The purpose of the Field and Furrow Club is to inform and expose its members to every aspect of agriculture, and supply them with the leadership skills needed to be a success. Shannon serving coffee Quad Day Every year the University of Illinois holds an event called Quad Day, in which the Registered Student Organizations set up on the main quad and recruit students. This year it was held on August 26th. Club members set up a table and talked to interested students about what they liked about the club and the types of activities the club does. They also told them about Fall Callout the first official activity for the club in which they could come and socialize to learn more about the club. Brad and Shannon

2 Page 2 Fall Callout On August 28th, the first official meeting and activity was held, Fall Callout, which took place at the South Farms. During the meeting many future events were discussed, such as philanthropy, social, and fundraising events. Forms for the National SASES meeting were handed out. Current and prospective members were able to socialize and play bags, as well as enjoy some tasty grilled burgers and hotdogs. As pictured below, there were many students in attendance, and faculty as well. Before leaving, current and prospective members paid their dues. 3 Page 3 Summer Internship Review A business meeting was held on September 11, and several club members had the opportunity to speak about different internships they participated in over the summer. Loren worked at Monsanto over the summer in the Transgenic Sciences department, learning about Agrobacterium. Nick was a Crop Protection Intern for DuPont. Madalyn was a Field Sales Intern for Monsanto and worked with the brand Channel. Members enjoyed listening about the different opportunities these students had and were able to take away some good advice. Loren stated a good point by saying I strongly encourage everyone to look for internships! They are great learning and growing opportunities. Nick speaking to the club Madalyn and Jacob presenting to the club MINIATURE GOLF Mums Fundraiser Club members played mini-golf on September 6th, for their social activity. Afterwards, members enjoyed custard cup as a treat! The fall fundraiser was selling mums on the ACES quad. The mums were available for purchase on September 20th, 21st, 27th, and 28th. The mums came in many different colors, and in small and large sizes. The fundraiser was a success thanks to the club members to helped out and the patronage of everyone who purchased the mums. There are many activities Field and Furrow does throughout the year and it would not be possible without the support we receive from fundraisers like this one. Zach running the stand

4 P a ge 4 F ield and Furrow Club Pathway Clean-up and Guest Speaker Club members took the time to clean up the pathway in front of the Morrow Plots on October 9th.They met prior to the beginning of the club meeting. A big thanks goes out to everyone who helped clean it up it looks great! After the business meeting, members had the privilege to hear from a guest speaker about Best Management Practices. CLEAN-UP The wealth of Illinois is in her soil, and her strength lies in its intelligent development. - Andrew Sloan Draper, President, University of Illinois, Doug gladly helped clean up the Morrow Plots! Bottom left: New Members Top left: Loren; Top right: Jarai and Katelin Bottom right: Shannon Club Member Initiation On November 13th, a review of the National SASES trip was given by Jarai and Katelin during the business meeting. A review of the trip can be read on page 5. Nominations for club officers were also taken. Afterwards, several new members were initiated into the club, of which an initiation ceremony took place. The new members can be seen wearing the new Field and Furrow shirts in the group photo to the right. Welcome to the new members! We hope that you enjoy it!

5 F ield and Furrow Club P a ge 5 NATIONAL SASES MEETING CINCINNATI, OHIO Several members attended the National Students of Agronomy, Soils, and Environmental Sciences (SASES) meetings in Cincinnati, Ohio, on October 19th-23rd. The members drove down the day before the events started. On the first day, members had the choice of attending one of a possible four tours. Members were able to visit places such as the University of Kentucky, a race horse farm, a dairy farm, an organic farm, the Reds baseball stadium, and the Cincinnati Botanical Gardens. In the evening, members attended the President s Trophy Competition, in which Mark McKown competed. Afterwards, members attended a Riverboat Cruise down the Ohio River. Katherine was selected as a golden scholar! The second day, members attended a brunch and listened to a speech by Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan. The Golden Opportunity Scholars were recognized, and we were proud that Katherine McLachlan was one of them! Jarai Carter participated in the speech contest and was able to win second place. After the speech finals, the quiz bowl was held, and Daniel Gaither was on the winning team comprised of students from different schools. On the third day, members visited the career fair and other seminar activities. In the evening, a dinner was held with the national officer elections and awards presentation. Jarai Carter won third place in the manuscript contest and Mark Sullivan was elected president of SASES! That evening, a second social dance was held. SMILE! Jarai took second place in the speech contest! Pictured here are some of the highlights of the trip, including an aquarium, a dairy farm, and meeting Ms. America 2011, Teresa Scanlan. The last day was filled with a trip to the Newport, Kentucky Aquarium where all kinds of neat fish and animals were seen, such as otters, treefrogs, jellyfish, and sharks! Overall, the trip was a great success and the members had a great time. Thank you to everyone who represented our university and a special thanks to Ms. Stoller and Mr. Dunker for chaperoning. Remember to keep the spring SASES regional meetings in Texas in mind!

6 P a ge 6 F ield and Furrow Club Holiday Meeting Club members met at Jupiters at the Crossing on December 11th, for the last meeting of Members enjoyed delicious pizza and chicken, a business meeting took place, and officer elections were held. Congratulations to the 2013 officer team and good luck with your positions!
