Family Peer Support: transferring the AOD experience to problem gambling Heather Pickard & Robert Campbell
Overview Family peer support at SHARC What we have learnt from peer support Picture of families affected by co-occurring AOD and problem gambling Project to adapt AOD Family Peer Support to problem gambling
Family Drug Help A Programme of SHARC Helpline Action Recovery Course Family Peer Support Groups Family Counselling BreakThrough
Family Peer Support Family peer support is based on an informal therapeutic relationship between peers people who have experienced similar adversity and successes. Family peer Support in the sector provides support to family members affected by substance use. Family peer Support Groups are designed and delivered by people who have lived experience of both substance abuse and recovery from the perspective as an impacted family member
Acceptance and Boundaries I can now move forward as I now accept my son has lifestyle choices that I don t agree with but I still love him. I m not addicted and I m not the addict, but I m there. Now I can move forward and be cheerful as I m not taking it on. (Bernadette)
Resilience and reduced worry I get a lot out of life now. It s made me stronger and a bit tougher and not as anxious as I was. I ve learnt to turn off a bit because I was reacting to him. (Marie)
Improved Relationships I think I haven t been truthful with myself and now share feelings with my family. I can now say I don t feel great if I don t feel great. I m much more truthful out loud. Group has helped me face these issues much more easily. A counsellor tells you what to do but a member of the group says how she dealt with something. (Bernadette)
FDH Turning Point Evaluation (2015) Peer support combines a powerful message of hope, and a wealth of lived experience and knowledge. Peer Support Groups can complement and extend the support provided in clinical AOD settings, not duplicate existing services build new supportive social networks share collective experience and wisdom receive and provide hope and inspiration strengthen and support each other s recovery and positive change processes practice new skills and develop leadership qualities rediscover and expand on personal resources and interests
Co-occurring: Gambling and AOD In Victoria, it is estimated 20% of people with alcohol abuse issues have co-occurring gambling problems (VRGF, 2014) The national statistic is between 20% 35% (VRGF, 2014) $19 billion spent on gambling in Australia each year (Productivity Commission, 2009) The social cost of problem gambling to the community is estimated to be at least $4.7 billion each year (Productivity Commission, 2009)
Problem Gambling and Families The problem gambling of one person affects at least 7 others (Productivity Commission, 1999) Approximately 20% of people accessing Australian gambling support services are family members of people who problem gamble, (Dowling, 2014) An Australian Gambling Research Centre paper indicated that there is need to develop new self-help options for this population (Dowling 2014). Families experiencing co-occurring gambling and AOD issues access supports through FDH
What are the impacts of gambling problems on families? affects the functioning of family and intimate relationships. affects intimate partners, as well as other family members including children, parents, siblings and grandparents. emotional problems and financial difficulties are some of the most common impacts. There is consistent evidence of an association between gambling problems and family violence. The children of problem gambling parents are at a much higher risk of developing gambling problems than the children of non-problem gambling parents. (Dowling, 2014)
Peer Support Capacity Building Project Families affected by problem gambling This project is philanthropy funded by the Ian Potter Foundation Key goals: Capacity building Collaboration with Gambling Sector Develop, deliver and evaluate: 1.
